While true, I didn't see an organization giving up two of their top ten prospects for a half-season of Carlos Lee. Dominguez is one of the best defensive third basemen in the minors, so even though the hit-tool isn't developing, there is value in his glove.

The Twins bats started off hot today and the team got another excellent performance from Scott Diamond. Gardenhire curiously gave the 8th inning to Alex Burnett, who allowed a hit and a walk before being relieved by Tyler Robertson who promptly served up a 3-run meatball to Prince Fielder. Anthony Swarzak, who also made an appearance despite being the only possible weekend starter on the active roster, gave up a home run to Delmon Young. After the game it was announced that Chris Parmelee would be heading back to Rochester to make room for P Sam Deduno, who would be having his contract purchased and starting Saturday’s tilt against the Texas Rangers. Deduno missed a month and half earlier this season with shoulder tendinitis.[PRBREAK][/PRBREAK] Deduno last pitched for the Red Wings on Monday. The Twins have known since sending Nick Blackburn down that they would be short a starter for the weekend. Many of those in the Twittersphere speculated that Deduno would be the guy getting the call for one of this weekend’s games. The other news out of Rochester was that RP Deolis Guerra, the last wheel of the Johan Santana trade, was placed on the 7-day D.L. He will be replaced in the pen by RP Dan Sattler. Sattler was signed from the independent St. Paul Saints on May 29th. Sattler will join LRP Caleb Thielbar in the Red Wings bullpen. They are the only two players the Twins have ever signed from the Saints. If you missed the report of yesterday’s action, you can find it here. Before we take a spin around the farm, let me warn you that it appears those at MiLB.com are still on holiday vacation. The box scores aren’t updating nearly as quickly as you’d expect, and when they are, they’re not always accurate. So if something that you read tonight is totally not true, well… you’ve read my disclaimer. ROCHESTER 6, PAWTUCKET 4 Box score This report is going to start with a non-Twins player, only because it’s that bad. Red Sox pitcher Daniel Bard entered the game and managed to do the following in only 20 pitches: Hit batter, double, hit batter, wild pitch, wild pitch, single, hook. I mention that also because his little brother and recent Twins-draftee, Luke, was probably on hand to watch big brother fall apart. Let’s hope that the two don’t share all the same DNA, if you know what I mean. With the win, the Wings improve to 40-47 and 26-24 since May 15. Matt Carson led the offense with two hits (one double) and with his two RBI, he has a team-leading 32 on the season. IL All-Star Pedro Florimon, who has struggled recently, added two hits as did Wilkin Ramirez who also added two walks. Danny Valencia snapped an 0-for-14 skid with his single off of Bard. Jeff Manship labored through four innings before turning the game over to Luis Perdomo. Perdomo struck out three in two innings to earn the win. Perdomo can also grow the best beard in the system, but that’s neither here nor there. Brendan Wise did all he could to make the game interesting again (2 2/3 IP, 7 H, 3 BB, 3 ER, K) before Caleb Thielbar ended it with one out, walking the first batter he faced on four pitches, before striking out the next batter on three pitches to earn his first AAA save. NEW BRITAIN 7, TRENTON 1 Box score The Rockcats were led by the bat of the best hitter in the system, Oswaldo Arcia. Arcia went 3-for-5 to raise his average to .303. Chris Colabello went 3-for-4 with two doubles. Five of the team’s runs came in the fifth inning. B.J. Hermsen, who will eventually join the pitching carousel if he keeps it up, went seven innings on 90 pitches. He allowed an unearned run on five hits and two walks. He struck out five. David Bromberg, who’s bounced around levels and roles, pitched two innings, allowing a hit. The win brings the Rockcats within a half game of Trenton in the Eastern Division of the Eastern League. That in itself, should be encouraging for Twins fans. FT. MYERS 8, CHARLOTTE 5 Box score The game of Dannys. Daniel Santana hit a 3-run blast in the fourth inning. It was his only hit, but he made it count. He also stole a base. Danny Ortiz was 3-for-5. He also added a home run and has his average up to .289. Danny Rams, who was once a decent prospect, continues his fall. After going 0-for-3 tonight, he’s batting .198. Though he did homer yesterday, the most powerful prep bat in the 2007 class is slugging only .339. He was much better – in the same league – in 2010. Tom Stuifbergen was much better than the box score suggests (only because the box score is actually wrong). He scattered six hits (not nine) over 5 1/3 innings. He allowed three runs (only one earned) and struck out two. The big-bodied Dutchman is working his way back from a variety of injuries. Stuif should move up to New Britain before long. BELOIT 3, CLINTON 5 Box score The Snappers were the last of the affiliates to finish their game and they were the first to lose. Tyler Jones is ready for the next step. He struck out seven in five innings, allowing two hits, a run and a walk. His ERA is now 2.51. He lowered his WHIP to 0.96 and raised his K/9 to 11.98. I really wonder why his season began in EST and not Beloit. Ryan O’Rourke had a rough couple of innings before giving way to Corey Williams, who couldn’t complete the 8th without giving up the go-ahead run and an insurance run. Clint Dempster got the final out of the inning before the bats came up short in the top half of the ninth. Drew Leachman had three singles (and an error). J.D. Williams had two hits (and a stolen base). Jhon Goncalves added two hits as well. Tyler Grimes contributed two hits – a double and a home run. RP Dallas Gallant will be joining the Snappers bullpen. He has been pitching for the E-Twins as he worked his way back from Tommy John surgery. ELIZABETHTON vs KINGSPORT - postponed GCL TWINS 5, GCL ORIOLES 0 Box score It seems a lot longer than the eleven games it took, but Byron Buxton collected his first professional extra base hit (a double) as well as his first professional run batted in. His batting average is up to .143, but over the last two days (three games), he’s batting .333 (4-for-12). Joe Benson made his second rehab start – his first since a forgetful 0-for-2, 2 K night – and went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run. He was also aggressive on the base paths, stealing a base and getting caught stealing. I’m not sure what the timetable is on Benson’s return to the upper levels, but it wouldn’t surprise me to see him get a few games in with the Miracle before heading back to New Britain (and eventually, hopefully, Rochester). Considering he is DH’ing, but not fielding, it would suggest he may have to stay around the GCL for a while yet. John Murphy stole two bases, including swiping home. Sam Gibbons pitched five innings of three hit, three strikeout ball. 2012 draftee Alex Muren made his second appearance, pitching two innings and striking out one. Melciades DeLaCruz finished off the shutout with two scoreless innings. --- Players of the Day for Thursday, July 5, 2012 Pitcher of the Day – B. J. FWIW, Deduno is out of options.
-
Comparing Valencia to Arcia is apples and oranges. Valencia wasn't a September call-up because he wasn't on the 40-man roster. A better comp would be Joe Benson and Chris Parmelee in 2011 - both in their first option years. They were brought up straight from New Britain. I doubt service time in those cases - or in Arcia's potential case - really mattered. Those 23 days in the case of Parmelee and Benson meant nothing since they both started this year in the minors. Arcia is a more advanced hitter than either of those guys as well. I'll put the chances of Arcia getting a post-AA season call-up at 60%. And put the over/under on MLB plate appearances at 55.
-
The difference between Valencia and Arcia was that Valencia wasn't on the 40-man and Arcia already is. So despite being much younger, I think there is a pretty good chance Arcia comes up after his season is done. Hicks needs to be added to the 40-man this offseason, so adding him in September wouldn't require much extra roster maneuvering as it wouldn't burn up an option year anyway. I would like to see both come up just to see what the big leagues really is... get the nerves and adjustments out during games that aren't as important.
-
Fernandez has become one of the top, young pitching prospects in baseball. James would be a possibility.
-
Sano at 22. Benson's stock down. Arcia mentioned as one who has improved. Rosario on all-disabled team. Draftees not included.
-
The Harpers and Trouts (and Mauers)... the "elite" prospects, rarely reach AAA. If you're elite and prove you can get it done in AA, you're ready to take your lumps in the bigs. Pitchers usually make a stop at AAA, but not always. I think "ideally" you want AA to be full of prospects and AAA to be oranizational depth, but the Twins are currently short on high-level high-end prospects. (Sano is the type that would skip AAA.)
-
I think whenever guys have contracts renewed (all pre-arbitration years), they are split contracts. So, yeah... its based on their lack of service time.
-
If he clears waivers and is available for the minimum, I'd guess he'd prefer to sign with a contender. If he's claimed on waivers, he'll cost about $3 minimum ($2.5m for the rest of the year; $.5m buyout for next year). It will be interesting to see if the A's can find a trade partner. I kind of doubt the Twins would put in a claim for him, but it might be worth taking a shot, seeing if he can turn it around and sell him at the end of August.
-
The Astros just traded Carlos Lee (and are paying most of the remaining $9m on his contract) to the Marlins for 3B Matt Dominguez and LP Rob Rasmussen. Dominguez (4th) and Rasmussen (7th according to BA) were both decently-rated prospects. As I read that the Marlins may have interest in Liriano, I tried to come up with a deal I thought the Twins would do: LSP Brad Hand (from Chaska) and LRP Adam Conley, in my opinion was a good basis. (Both former Twins draftees.) Hand struggled in the majors last year (straight from AA) and is ho-hum in AAA this year. Conley was a 2nd round pick last year (and probably signed in August, so would have to a PTBNL). Hand was BA's 8th prospect (coming into 2011) and Conley was 10th (coming into 2012). Now I'm beginning to think the Twins could get a little more than this for Frankie...

For what it's worth, neither of those players that are "restricted" were listed on the Twins offseason minor league roster (courtesy, again, of the Twins Record and Information Book).

Blackie optioned to AAA; Casey Fien promoted
Jeremy Nygaard replied to SwainZag's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
According to the 2009 Record and Information Guide - so I would assume the end of 2008 - he weighed 227. This year's lists him at 238. So he's a little heavier than when he was good. Could that be an issue? Who knows... -
Blackie optioned to AAA; Casey Fien promoted
Jeremy Nygaard replied to SwainZag's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Blackie was the Twins #1 Prospect coming into the 2008 season according to BA. I found the following quote to be extremely interesting. The "weight" that he's listed at in the report was 205. (He was once 260.) His weight now is 240. I get part of that addition of weight has to do with filling out and becoming a man... but what if he lost 15-20 pounds? -
Blackie optioned to AAA; Casey Fien promoted
Jeremy Nygaard replied to SwainZag's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Blackburn, technically, had two options remaining. He was closing in on 5 years of service time (he's currently at 4.106) at which point he could refuse an assignment. But at anytime between yesterday and 67 days from now, the Twins can do it without his permission. I've mentioned it before, but I will again: There are 94 calendar days left this year, if he spends 28 days in the minor leagues, his option year will be an arbitration year and not a free agent year. I don't think it really matters, since he's proving he's not a major league caliber pitcher, but it is interesting. -
Blackie optioned to AAA; Casey Fien promoted
Jeremy Nygaard replied to SwainZag's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
All you need to know about Casey Fien: Right-handed, strictly relief pitcher. Has 52 days of major league service time (all with Tigers in 2009 and 2010). I looked back through years of transactions and found he's been optioned in 2009 and 2010, so it appears he has an option left. Has decent strikeout numbers over his minor league career. As was mentioned above, it appears the Twins will have to call on a starter eventually, but with the ASG break coming up, and Swarzak in the bullpen, the Twins might be able to get through the rest of the week without making anymore moves. P.J. Walters will probably be ready to be activated by the time the Twins have a need after the break. -
Williams saved his second game of the month tonight (and collected his 12th save of the year). His ERA is down to 3.13 on the year and continues to average more than a K per inning. (His ERA dating back to June 4th is 1.98.)

Was Willingham Unjustly Snubbed?
Jeremy Nygaard replied to John Bonnes's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
What I really want to see if Nick Blackburn groove "fastballs" over in the inner-half of the plate to Trevor Plouffe in the HR Derby. -
I think the Twins will try and move Valencia before the deadline. I don't think the Twins would get a great return for Valencia - and the Dodgers don't appear to have an "formerly-drafted-by-the-Twins" players to trade them. (Blake Dean, unsigned pick in 2009, retired this offseason.) I view it kind of the same way that everyone viewed Kevin Slowey as on the way out during the lead up to last year's deadline. But who really knows...?

What kind of trade value does Plouffe have at this time?

Was Willingham Unjustly Snubbed?
Jeremy Nygaard replied to John Bonnes's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
In my fictitious world, Willingham and Mauer got to decide who was going to play. Josh told Joe, "Look Joe, it would be an honor, but I have a family and hot wife that would like me to come home for a couple of days... you have your dog, Lil Kim, and a "fiance" that none of us have ever seen. I'm gonna go home, spend some time with my boys... and you're giving me your 25K All-Star game bonus." In reality though, it's disappointing because I'm sure all guys would like to say they were an All-Star... but judging by his post-game interview, there are a lot of fans far more disappointed than he is.
