  1. If Danny Santana is in the late June OF in a corner spot I quit. I'm done watching.
  2. This is basically all factually incorrect and awful revisionist history. Who loved the Hughes extension? Why didn't Perkins get a no trade clause if that was part of the agreement? Pelfrey wanted to be here? Maybe because they gave him $12 million and elsewhere he would've had a tough time finding a minor league deal.
  3. Only 1/3 of Doumit's at bats were at Catcher in 2013, so I'm not really gonna go with "no replacements" angle. Yes, I know they traded him... For nothing, my point is at the 2012 All Star break he may have had actually value. Him, Suzuki, etc are the exact type of players rebuilding teams sell high on. Neither have provided the Twins with any value, and both will leave with no return
  4. At the 2013 trade deadline they were 1.5 years into that "extension", would that have been an ok time to trade? They were on the way to 96 losses, and would follow that up by losing 92 the following year. I really don't think this was a case of hindsight at all, plenty of people were calling for him to be traded. I also don't think bringing up Capps justifies it at all... "Don't do this smart thing, because you might follow it up with something really dumb"
  5. They lost 96 games in the 2 years (2012, 2013) following his 1st extension, before his 2nd. They signed him to a second extension in March of 2014 with 3 years remaining on the original extension. 96 loss teams don't need good closers,. They could have traded him many times without worrying about offending him and his "hometown discount" (or they could have just never signed him to that 2nd one.. the original would be in its final year now)
  6. I don't think anyone here believes the new GM will be calling them for advice on potential moves. I think we all understand that new GM will run things their own way. That doesn't mean we can't discuss what types of traits we'd like to see in the new GM.
  7. They signed Perkins to a 3 year $10.3 million deal after his 1st good season in the majors. The fact that he continued to be a good pitcher made this contract look like a bargain, but I would hardly classify that as a hometown discount... and I don't think the Twins owed him anything
  8. Signing a 31 year old who is a free agent at seasons end, and is performing above career averages to a multi year deal certainly seems to be part of their plan (Suzuki, Doumit), but we'll have to agree to disagree if you think that is rebuilding. If I was rebuilding, I would have traded Doumit and Suzuki in the midst of these career years rather than give them 2 year extensions. Neither figure into my long term plans, and they have trade deadline value. I'm not sure who suggested calling up kids from A ball and playing them means rebuilding, but I certainly didn't.
  9. I think people may be confusing "Losings lots of games" with "Rebuilding"
  10. You can't seriously be pointing to those examples and say that means we were rebuilding. The same Ryan Doumit that was very good in 2012, got a contract extension mid-season even though it was a 90 loss team and then was eventually traded for nothing? I could go on with the other players on your list but I can't tell if this is meant to be satirical or not
  11. To piggyback on the other thread about when is the right time to replace the GM... going this route also allows you to start that search for the Team President immediately... Ryan can still handle the draft, trade deadline, etc. with a new president looking over his shoulder. That president can clean house in October.
  12. We must have a very different idea of what the definition of rebuilding is. They won 83 games this year, you think it was just lip service when he said they expected to make the playoffs? Personally, I thought it was a long shot at best they would make the playoffs. But they absolutely expected too.
  13. They went 83-79 last year and said the GM said the goal this season was to win the AL Central. That's rebuilding? REBUILDING: “I do think we’re a playoff-caliber club,” Ryan said before Monday’s season opener at Camden Yards. “I don’t have any qualms to mention that. I just think this is a good ball club and we ought to be pointing toward that type of ceiling.” “I don’t care how many wins it takes as long as we’re in,” Ryan said. “Whether it takes 84 or 80 or 90, that’s where we need to go.” “We need to go out and try to win this division,” he said. “Not a wild-card spot. That’s dangerous. You’d like to make sure you at least get five games (in a playoff series) to go out and prove you’re that type of ball club.
  14. I agree with all of these. One trend that the Braves appear to be all in on is basically buying assets by taking on salary. Just grabbed the Orioles comp pick to take on Matusz's salary, last year I think they got a 1st round pitcher from the Dbacks for taking on Arroyo's contract. Be creative in acquiring assets, through the draft (3 2nd round picks this year will certainly help the bonus pool), international market, etc. *And call Dave Stewart once a week to check in and see if he wants to make a deal
  15. Do you think a .204/.278/.351 line he's putting up in the Majors over the past ~120 games is improving his trade value? Fixing whatever issues hes currently got going on is the only way to improve trade value, whether that needs to be done in AAA or MLB, who knows.
  16. His obliviousness to his struggles, especially the comments made to you over the Spring certainly lead him to believe if the Blyleven / unnamed player story really happened, Dozier is candidate #1.
  17. Well I imagine Polanco is headed back to Rochester today or tomorrow when Escobar returns, I would've liked to seen him play the last week but the manager has no time for that. For now, if you want to keep Nunez in the lineup, I think at least a few times a week should be at 2B. And Dozier should be hitting 7th, but that's been the case for awhile now
  18. I don't know what your issue is, but maybe step back and take a few deep breathes. It's a message board, and I was responding to a post I disagreed with, that's usually how this works. How did me disagreeing with your comment derail anything?
  19. Huh? Tad bit of an overreaction? I was replying to your post, no one elses. Any sort of "constraint" Ryan has is self imposed, by signing mediocre veterans without upside to contracts for more years and money than they are worth.
  20. 1) They are 11-32, yes the nucleus is bad. 2) What constraints? The $200 million the Pohlad's are paying/ did pay to Ervin Santana, Ricky Nolasco, Phil Hughes, Mike Pelfrey and Kurt Suzuki? That's a constraint, or a GM that doesn't know how to spend money?
  21. Which should surprise absolutely no one. None of these guys were ever in the mix in Spring, what was the absolute best case scenario, 1 or 2 would be ready in Mid-May, 20% of the way through the season..? At this point outside of Chargois, will we see any before August?
  22. "You said in November that bullpen was the highest priority, no moves other than a couple of minor league FA's were made. As we sit here in late May, the ERA is 4.75, a full run above league Avg. Where did your plan to fix this go wrong?"
  23. Right - but they had open 40 man spots for a handful of those moves, I don't think Perkins not being on the 60 changed much. Graham was cut when his spot wasn't needed, same with Fien. When Polanco got called up I believe they had one of the Graham/ Fien/ Milone open spots for Beresford had they wanted it... what you and I would do is much different than how they manage their roster
  24. You answered your own question. There's no need to put him on there until they need that 40 man spot
  25. I'm not a fan of Souhan, and think generally it's a pretty slippery slope to rip players for being hurt... BUT, it's refreshing to see the media start to take on some of the Veterans (not just pick on the young guys), and think Perkins and Hughes are more than deserving of criticism. I hope the Brian Dozier column is next.
