  1. Trade Brian Dozier & Glen Perkins to the Braves for Alex Wood & Sean Gilmartin. Trade Doumit & Burton (now a proven closer ;p ) at the deadline for any near MLB pitcher with upside. SP: Correa, Wood, Deduno, Messenger, Moon (Gibson & Meyer waiting in the wings in AAA) Bullpen: Fien, Swarzak, Tonkin, Welker, Pressley, Theilbar, Albers C: Mauer/Pinto 1B: Pinto/Mauer 2B: Rosario SS: Florimon 3B: Sano OF: Pessly, Arcia, Mastrioanni DH: Willingham Bench: Plouffe, Escobar, Doumit, Herman
  2. I think the Twins will go hard after Randy Messenger & Suk-Min Yoon likely signing both. Also either Hughes or Josh Johnson on a 1 year deal. Feldman would be great & the Twins have always reportedly been high on him but he pitched pretty well for a contender in the AL Beast. The market will price him out of what the Twins will spend. Knowing Ryan's history, he is going to go for having multiple options mid level options. Sano will make the team out of ST relegating Plouffe to 4th OF/1B duties. They should move Dozier but there are other 2B (Phillips,Kinsler etc..) who maybe available possibly watering down the trade market. There's a good chance both Meyer & Gibson are in the rotation by June/July. I hope a RHP bullpen guy (Burton) will be packaged with Dozier for a pitcher in the Meyer/May mold.
  3. A lot of good points in here, a few bits that I don't agree with. Both Cruz & Hart have publicly stated they will take hometown discounts to resign with their current/former teams. It's probably fairly safe to say Hughes is not going to get a large multi year dea. He is going to want to go to a pitcher friendly team (ballpark/defense) to re establish his value on a 1 year incentive laden deal. You arent getting anything for Doumit other than dumping salary. Maybe a guy like Welker but I think that is even unlikely. I'd prefer to dump the salary & spend it on pitching but they have plenty of payroll available to spend on pitching and it wont be used anyway. Maybe he can be packaged with Willingham near the deadline after rebuilding a little value. Deduno can be a solid 4/5 guy cheaply for a few years. Your not going to get value for him and the rotation is so depleted it doesnt make a lot of sense to trade him. Also I agree its almost certain Hicks will start in AAA as will Parmelee. Pressly, Mastrioanni, & Arcia will be the OF with Willingham splitting time between DH & 4th OF with Doumit. As much sense as a platoon with Plouffe/Parmelee makes it wont happen. Gardy & Ryan have stated numerous times they don't believe in platoons which I find maddening. It makes sense that you dont want to platoon young guys developing, they will never improve nor will you find out if they can hit both sides without giving them the chance. However at some point it becomes painfully obvious the guy can't hit one or the other it should be done.
  4. I agree with this so much, why are things not done now to help save in he future allowing more to be spent on player salaries? Hmm we didnt like the pitchers available this year, we have 30 mill in unspent approved payroll this year. Heres a novel idea, lets sign a guy to a massively front loaded contract or lets redo Mauers deal and take 5 mill off each year and front load it all into this season? Lets be a little creative here.
  5. By now pretty much everyone agrees & knows you can't build a winner through free agency. You dont want to hand out excessively long contracts, things change too much from year to year. However when 1 aspect or portion of your team is so bad it completely brings down the rest combined with having nothing really ready in the minors to plug those holes. You have to augment the roster through FA. When you have a cheap roster where the young players you believe you would like to keep long term aren't eligible for FA for multiple years. How are you not adding talent (Starting pitching) on smaller length 2-3 year deals that will be expiring before you expect these other players salaries to grow? How does pocketing that help anything but your draft position. The very most frustrating & rippable part of Terry Ryan's logic is every season we hear the "we know we need to add some pitching, so we expect to be active on a few players" Then every year the 1st guy signs there is a massive sticker shock and they sign Mike Pelfrey's to1 year deals to be terrible. How do you misjudge the market that badly every season? With the new TV money teams are going to spend more than they expect every year, so what if our staff sucks & the young guys arent ready being terrible is acceptable when there is room on the payroll left? It's completely redicilous.
  6. Duesning yes, you are really discounting how good Swarzak was last year. Yes the teams biggest strength is RHP bullpen guys so that may make him more replaceable but he really pitched pretty well IMO.
  7. Hey Seth, love all the work you put into this, great reads! Small request as I find myself jumping back & forth from this page to the players last season stats. Any way they could be tossed in at the end of the summary for each player? Also with the pitchers, does anyone know a good site where you can find a pitchers pitch repetoire? Like he has a 2 seamer, curve, changeup & slider. etc...
  8. Ultimately you want consistent players all across the board besides a few places. Your #1 & 2 SP, the 3 & 4 hitters you want the stars to carry your RBI's with 1 & 2 OBP guys. Prefferably the rest of the team is quality guys who can hit a lil & play D.
  9. Tanaka is not happening, the Yankees are determined to snag him & I believe the posting/bid fees dont apply to the payroll as they are determined to stay under 189M/year & retaining Cano. The Twins should be looking at signing 1 SP like Colby Lewis & trading for a guy who is in the last year of their deal and hopefully they can get him without giving up a big time prospect. Bailey, Lester, Anderson... etc
  10. Lmao seriously. Lets trade for an expensive aging star at the 1 position we are about to be 2 deep at, 2B. You realize this rotation will be terrible next year also. Escobar is barely a better hitter than Florimon & not much better defensively. Dozier hopefully will be traded by the deadline for pitching even if Perkins or a B level pitching prospect needs to be included.
  11. That was the impression I got from your post as well & appreciate authors/writers who are willing to come and debate their points are always welcome in my book.
  12. I'd like to think they can atleast sign a guy like Colby Lewis & trade for a flier on Brett Anderson.
  13. If the Twins were willing to eat most or all of Uggla's salary enabling Atlanta some real payroll relief to resign McCann while adding in Perkins I think they could get Atkanta to listen to offers on Alex Wood. Wood, Meyer, Stewart, Berrios, Gibson/May would be a fascinating rotation possibility
  14. I would say a LOOGY is basically a lefty specialist, if their ceiling is only being able to get lefties out I wouldnt qualify them much of a prospect.
  15. They aren't going to spend significant $ on a SP. However the payroll will be very low the next 2 years without making any big splashs's. Atlanta needs to resign McCann, they also need a 2B & have little to no payroll space left. If the Twins were willing to eat most or all of Uggla's salary enabling them to resign McCann could Brian Dozier fetch Alex Wood? In a Dozier for Uggla & Wood possible deal. A Simmons/Dozier combo would be the best defensive middle infield in baseball by far. As good as Wood has looked Perkins may need to be included to sweeten the pot. I would love to start envisioning a future Wood, Meyer, Stewart, Berrios, Gibson/May rotation
  16. Too bad May has really appeared to have stalled out at AA. Had he performed as well as Meyer the roatation culd be looking a lot brighter. I'm a little higher on Rosario too, I'd put him at B+.
  17. A Parmelee/Plouffe platoon makes so much sense it will never happen.
  18. I understand what you are saying, my thoughts on moving him are more in line with this team is still 2 years away from having a competent rotation. By that time dozier will be 30 and in the tail end of his arbitration years. Trading him to help stockpile the rotation options for 2014-2016 when these position players are breaking in is the best route if your not going to spend any money to augment the rotation other than Pelfrrey/Correa types. I also believe both Rosario & Sano are ready to play next year at the mlb level.
  19. Good points on the Dozier/Span comparison, also I hadnt realized Gilmartin's star had fallen so. I knew the Braves had some intriguing 2b coming through the pipeline but did not think they were that mlb ready.
  20. Last off season Ryan dipped his toes in the SP FA pool and found the water much too cold for his tight pockets. Pelfrey has been about as good as you could have expected an average at best SP coming back 10 months from TJ surgery. Correa wasn't nearly as bad as expected but still was at best a solid #5. Not liking the pickings or the prices Ryan decided to move a surplus to fill a hole moving Revere & Span for Meyer & May. Meyer could likely earn a rotation spot out of Spring Training but May struggled repeating AA and there are whispers he could be destined for a bullpen setup/closer understudy. Trade Brian Dozier for Braves LHP Sean Gilmartin. With the same scenario very liely playing out again this year, who are the candidates to be moved for SP? on the MLB roster the first obvious choice is 2B Brian Dozier. He is under team control for a few years cheaply but is also already 27 by next opening day. The Braves are desperate for a 2B to replace the mightlity struggling & expensive Uggla. Given Dozier's age your not going to get a Alex Meyer. The Braves Sean Gilmartin, a southpaw similar to Gibson in potential & stuff could be a fair value straight up. He is still just 23 and pitched in AAA last year. Any other candidates others view could be moved for SP? I could see Travis Harrison as a possibilty being blocked by uber prospect Miguel Sano at 3B. Maybe Brandon Beachy could be available if the Twins added a B level prospect or 2 to the deal.
  21. The obvious answer would be 50/50 between the Rays & A's. However that can't really be done the way they have succeeded so well in the past as easily atleast. The Rays had an unprecedented streak of bad years getting top 5 picks, but they also very smartly played the compensation cards getting extra picks as FA comp in the few rounds. This really isnt possible anymore with the new FA compensation system. The A's have traded guys before they lost their value, loaded up on pitching & smartly played the FA market with short term deals and using good analytics to identify bargains to take chances on. They also seem to platoon players as well as any maximizing value. With all the teams really being much smarter using all these new tools, fewer diamonds in the rough are falling through the cracks. I would lean towards the Braves, they don't overpay or trade the wrong guys, arent afraid to deal the ones whom are & do an admirable job buying low on talent they feel they can turn around. The Cardinals being a great example but they have had an unprecedented run of luck nailing on guyys in later rounds who have fourished. IT's almost uncanny.
  22. I do agree with Ryan's philosophy however, when your team has serious holes at a particular position you have to augment your roster with a signing here & there. Simply holding onto the unspent payroll for no other reason than they can't get the players on team friendly deals is rediculous. He needs to move off his stance from 97% against signing high profile FA to more like 80-85% against it if that makes sense.
  23. I'd argue it's because their major league success is history but that also means they have little to no value. However moving them to teams that needs depth and has plenty of $ to burn so that $10Mill can be spent on pitching I agree with 100%.
  24. Plouffe has very little trade value other than being possible filler at a position of need if the other team needed a versatile INF who can hit lefties. Kohl Stewart is not being given up on for Homer Bailey. Harrison is a good start though. Harrison & Dozier would prob be a good base package but personally I think I'd want a deal in principle being set to resign Bailey atleast before making the trade.
  25. Anderson is in the last year of team control next year, Rosario & Kepler is way too much IMO for 1 year of team control. Dozier, Boyd, & Levi Micheal is more like what I would hope they would offer.
