  1. Except he wasn't middling overall. He had an ERA 24% better than league average. While not quite in the elite bracket, that's firmly in the very good bracket. If you want to move on from every pitcher who isn't an ace, you're going to have a hard time filling out a rotation. Of every player on the roster, I think Berrios absence would be the toughest to recover from.
  2. I have no idea if Altuve is "scum", or what kind of guy Lombardozzi is. But, anyone who systematically cheats is devoid of character.
  3. Duran misses bats with his though. He's not pitching it to contact and hoping for ground balls.
  4. Fangraphs grades his slider as above average now, with plus potential.
  5. Take a look at the innings pitched. They aren't actually projecting an ERA for Wells (or any of the other pitchers they have at 1 inning). It just means they don't project him to pitch in the MLB and they don't want any of those guys that won't pitch to list above the players who will when sorting by ERA. It's not a knock against Wells, it's the same for everyone they don't expect to play, regardless of draft position.
  6. They aren't allowed more than 13 pitchers on the roster. New rule when the 26 man roster was introduced.
  7. They aren't allowed to carry 14 pitchers. That's a new rule that came with the 26 man roster.
  8. Zero reason they can't DH Garver when Avila catches. They can play by NL rules for a few innings on the slim chance Avila has to leave the game.
  9. I agree that a couple of those guys are going to have to be able to step in for the league minimum next year. At least 15 of that $30M is going to have to go to one starting pitcher.
  10. I'm estimating arbitration amounts, of course. But I come up with $99M in 2021 payroll for the remaining players in your above scenario. Should be more like 30-35 million to spend. I don't know if that changes your argument.
  11. Of course if they are taking a hard line on "cheaters", they'd have to release Cruz and Pineda as well.
  12. BP had Alcantara #70 overall coming into his rookie season. I'd love to see the stacked system that would have him in the 15-20 range.
  13. What was his OPS the previous 5 seasons? Which is more likely: Adrianza at age 30 suddenly became a vastly better hitter than ever before? Or he had a career year in a relatively small sample size? I'm not saying it's impossible that he suddenly figured something out. But I think it's far more likely that he's a .680 OPS guy that got hot for a few weeks last year. And even if his 2019 hitting is legit, that's still a bottom of the league starting SS.
  14. But that's not true. If Jake Cave continues to perform, he'll have value. In fact he already does. Just because Jake Cave has performed well enough to be capable of being a starting caliber player if needed, doesn't mean that every "bench" player is going to. It's not realistic to think you are going to have 4 of those guys on your bench. Adrianza is a good example of my argument. He's a quality backup/ utility infielder. That has value. He's not good enough to be a starting SS. Is your argument that the Twins should just cut Adrianza now? Or is it that giving him 600 plate appearances is suddenly going to transform him into a starting caliber SS? Because I don't agree with either of those arguments. And the role the team views a player in has very little impact on their trade value. Teams are doing their own independent evaluations. The Marlins aren't sitting there going, "all of our data says he can be a capable starting OF'er, but he's a backup on the Twins so I guess he has no value."
  15. Last year when Schoop got hurt, they didn't move Marwin to 2B, they called up Arraez. I think they'd do the same with Gordon this year if they think he's ready. I think they prefer Marwin in a super utility role, not starting anywhere, assuming someone is ready to step into a starting role. So personally, I don't think Gordon is affected in any way by Donaldson signing. Nor do I think Raley is. I think the possibility of Kepler moving to 1B (thus opening up OF playing time) was purely fan speculation. I'd be surprised if the team actually considered it.
  16. Gordon is a middle infielder, how is his path affected by the Donaldson signing?
  17. Ok, but even 10 guys rotating 9 spots leaves a couple of backups that aren't playing every day. That's my only argument is that Riverbrian tells me if a guy is likely a backup then just cut him now. That tells me he wants 13 guys all playing equal time.
  18. Because the cream rises to the top. Even backups will get their chances over 162 games. If they outplay their expectation, they'll get more playing time. If they continue to perform during the course of that additional playing time, they'll move into one of those starting spots. Or, they'll have trade value. I don't think we're suggesting vastly different things. It's just that you suggest "forcing" the issue, whereas I suggest letting it come naturally. No two players have equal talent and ability. If it appears they do, then they simply aren't being evaluated with enough digits after the decimal point. There is no such thing as a true "tie" in a race. If you keep adding past the decimal point, you'll eventually find that one participant was faster than the other. I want the faster guy in the race, even if he's only .0001 seconds faster. 26 guys of equal ability just isn't realistic.
  19. I didn't say they should never play. I'm saying they shouldn't play on an equal rotation. It doesn't matter if a player is .300 or .050 OPS better. The better player should play.
  20. And just because I think Blankenhorn's upside is utility player, doesn't mean he's a waste of a 40 man spot. In addition to my argument in the previous post about those guys having value, there is also a chance he exceeds expectations and develops into a league average starter somewhere.
  21. Backups and utility guys that make the league minimum have value. I understand you think they should all play, but I couldn't disagree more. Some players are better than others. Playing someone worse and sitting someone better is just throwing away production, IMO. Even in a 7 for 6 spots rotation, like you mentioned, that's still 23 times per season, for EACH of the 6 spots that you are sitting a better player so that the 7th best of those 7 can play equally. That's the equivalent of losing a better player for the entire season, those games add up.
  22. Travis Blankenhorn's upside is backup/utility infielder, IMO. Not starter. So I don't think he's affected by the Donaldson signing.
  23. Raley is a legitimate outfielder, not a first base candidate, IMO. I would assume that's why he wasn't mentioned.
  24. This would be my choice as well.
