  1. Betts, Ohtani and Freeman at the top of your lineup. Dodgers are just loaded.
  2. Yup. And in 2021, the Loons were a below average team offensively. Never quite understood the appeal.
  3. He was actually decent for the Braves last year - mostly low leverage situations. Considering the injuries in the bullpen, its not the worst move they could make.
  4. Seems like a quantum leap to go from the Arizona League and the 'Great Lakes Loons' to an MLB hitting instructor. Really wish the Twins would just cut the cord. It didn't work in 2022 and 2023. It's getting worse in 2024.
  5. In 2019, the Dodgers named Popkins as a hitting coach for the Arizona Dodgers of the Arizona League.[3] In 2021, he coached for the Great Lakes Loons.[4] After the 2021 season, the Minnesota Twins hired Popkins to be their hitting coach.[2][5]
  6. No confidence and overthinking things. This is where a hitting coach would come in handy...
  7. Today's the day! Twins win. 6-4.
  8. Maybe they're starting to figure something out at the plate and it carries over to this afternoon. As bad as the bats have been, if they can come out of this stretch at 4-6, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Thought Varland was okay but you can't hang center-cut fastballs against the Dodgers. Two bad pitches and that was that.
  9. At the end of the day, if Duran and Lewis return healthy and the Twins avoid a major injury to Correa, Buxton, AK, Lopez, and Ryan, they will win the division. Guardians have a sweet spot in the schedule where they opened at Oakland and draw the AAA White Sox while the Twins are playing the Dodgers. Cleveland's line-up is too light for them once the schedule evens out. Detroit's not very good. The Royals are a mess. And the White Sox should be contracted. Twins can win the division with 82-87 wins. But this type of approach at the plate will get them obliterated in October. And really, I don't think the Pohlads will care. They hang division banners with the same affection as the Yankees and Dodgers hang World Series banners. Is what it is.
  10. Castro provided a huge spark last year, but holy hell, he's been horrifically bad so far. Struggles to catch up to 90 MPH fast balls up in the zone.
  11. On the bright side, against Cleveland, the Twins had plenty of traffic on the base paths and with some timely hitting, they would've blown the Guardians out both games. But, this isn't an 8 game sample size we're talking about. The ridiculous strikeout numbers aren't new. The common denominator is obvious and until that is addressed, this will remain a feast or famine lineup with a lean towards the latter.
  12. Headrick to the 7-day IL. Forearm strain. So that leaves SWR as the only healthy pitcher in the minors that's on the 40-man roster. Woof. Oh, and Alcala's status is TBD. Hopefully with him it is just general soreness from having missed so much time the last couple of years.
  13. Also, won't kill Rocco for pulling Ober. Not so much about pitch count, IYAM. Third time through with Ohtani and Freeman. Obviously Okert and Jackson didn't come through, but not necessarily sure Ober would've have come through either. On the bright side, Ober can take some confidence from the outing.
  14. 2022 and 2024 - franchise record for fewest hits through the first 8 games of the season. In 2022, it was 48. In 2023, it was 47. Not understanding how Popkins continues to be employed. No one would confuse this line-up with the 1927 Yankees but I also wouldn't confuse it with one of the worst in franchise history and that's where things are trending.
  15. Would like to see Kirilloff get a chance tonight. Even with a lefty-lefty match up, I have more confidence in AK right now than Jeffers or Martin.
  16. Miranda getting the call. Even though they're short an arm in the bullpen, this makes sense. Offense is so anemic right now and with Martin and Margot not getting any kind of run, might as well give Miranda a shot at 3B / 1B.
  17. Sucks about Duarte. Hopefully whatever the injury is, it isn't serious.
  18. Something to be said for continuity but also as much to be said about hanging onto players for too long. Kepler hit his ceiling a long time ago. He should be a platoon player at this point. Good teammate and certainly some sentimentality but the Twins should have moved on from him this off-season even if it was a low return.
  19. It's not about trying or effort, It's about approach. It's a feast or famine approach. They will eventually start to hit some homeruns, but the strikeouts aren't going anywhere. We've already seen that this type of offense doesn't lend itself to the post-season. The Twins should still win the division, though. The Tigers might be a year or two away and Cleveland, meh - everyone would look good after having played Oakland to open the season.
  20. He's off to a great start, but I still consider Correa to be the team's best player and hitter (when healthy) at least until Lewis gets back.
  21. Oh, and why is the team's best hitter and player batting fifth?
  22. Stayed away from the thread today because I was too much of a negative nelly on Wednesday. But, woof. I cannot stand this team's approach at the plate. All the Twins had to do today was make contact and they probably win the game. Silver lining - bullpen looks good and Rocco's not afraid to use guys for more than an inning at a time.
  23. Fair enough. At the end of the day, we're all on the same side. I will make an effort to be more even-keeled during the game day threads. And absolutely agreed on Correa. Twins are lucky to have him!
  24. Paddack / Varland - Only concern with the former is health and with Varland, keeping the ball in the park.
