  1. I think of theTwins CF like this: Puckett, Great Hunter, Very Good Span, Good We may or many not miss Span. I think we might miss him this year but if Hicks plays to potential I think he becomes the better player of the two, perhaps as good as Hunter.
  2. Sort of puzzling on why they are not mentioning anything about an innings count for Pelfrey, it's not like he's old and this his last shot. Might simply be what Boom Boom is saying, 1 year deal and you're talking about a veteran pitcher VS a prospect so if things go wrong with Pelfrey you lose a lot less.
  3. Just for the fact that he's 23 and only going into the second season as a starter means he's defenitely not a flop. Hopefully he'll get a shot to be the #5 starter this year, assuming the Twins don't sign Saunders. If they sign Saunders, Hendriks will be relagated to a fill in role again which I think might be bad for his developement. I'd like hime to get to a chance to be the #5 and sink or swim. Then again you have Gibson who I'd like to see as well, but then Pelfrey might not be ready to go and there's chance of injury so Gibson still get his innings as well.
  4. That's a little over the top don't you think? The status ove the back up catcher is worthy beind despondant about? I would save your energy put toward being despondant toward the rotation.
  5. I'm not sure how this became an arguement about who has more value. There is no contest Doumit has a ton more value than Butera. It's not even debatable. Seems we all agree that Doumit isn't a very good catcher so that seems settled. Seems to me the only real topic left here to discuss is the vailidity of Butera being on the roster.
  6. I think what we saw last season makes me think he could be that good but given the less than impressive rise though the minors I'm reserving my judgement on Hicks until I see how he handles the majors.
  7. Yes, he seems to be over estimating Doumit's catching and under estimating Butera's catching. I still think Doumit is clearly the better overall player but I think Butera being on the roster is justified given Doumit's lack of catching ability and lack of better defensive options on the roster or in the minors.
  8. Yahoo does have some good baseabll coverage. This is a good example of that. As for Hicks, I think it's a huge year for him and the long term future of the Twins OF. What happens this year with Hicks is going to have a huge effect on the OF in the next 5-6 years. Do we have the next Kirby Puckett or Tori Hunter or the next Denard Span or maybe not even MLB caliber? Should be interesting to see how the situation developes.
  9. This is the problem with the whole discussion. We don't know the behind the scene talks that may have happened. If TR calls Marcum's agent and says "we have $5M for you right now, take it or leave it, but if you leave it we're going another direction" and his agent comes back with wanting $8m then is it TR's fault that the deal didn't happen? For all we know they could have offered $4m or even more to Marcum a while back and he turned it down thinking he could get more and then the Twins just said forget it because the price is too high and went with Pelfrey. Eitherway, I still think that they have the money for both guys if they wanted them unless TR was given some absurdly low budget to work with.
  10. Ramos, good example of a bad trade. Ramos could have been the perfect backup for Mauer.
  11. Like I said, Butera is a more extreme example.
  12. They are comparable in that they are pretty one dimensional players. Kubel wasn't very good at all in the field but could hit, same for Doumit. Butera is a good defensive catcher but coulding hit the ball to save his life. Butera is a more extreme example but the basic comparison is true.
  13. I never said he belonged on the MLB roster. I'm just saying you have Mauer who is one of the best in the game as a starter and the team has many other needs where they need a 1st line player including starting pitcher and middle infield. They threw some money at some subpar players in the rotation and traded for another but they didn't address the infield at all which is more of a priority right now than backup catcher. I think with Doumit, Mauer and Butera they'll be fine though it would be nice to have more of a complete backup catcher on the roster. If I had it my way they Butera wouldn't be on the roster but on the other hand I'd rather have an infielder and some better pitcher first.
  14. Yes, the Twins have had a lot of players like that it seems. Butera, Doumit, Kubel....ect I think that is probably the worst thing to have on the team when team hitting isn't good. You feel like yo need to put these guys out there to have a chance to score some runs but sometimes they are so bad in the field or in Butera's case at the plate that it might be a wash at times.
  15. You realize catchers like that don't grow on trees? Pretty much all catchers that can both catch and hit are starters. The Twins also could use a couple starting pitchers, some infielders ....ect. Backup catcher is probably not as high on the list as pitching and middle infield and they didn't exactly splurge on those positions.
  16. That's my thinking. I think TR was given a number that was substantially less than the 50% to work with and I'm sure that's supposed to be a secret. I don't think they ever intended to approach 50% this season.
  17. We'll given he's 19, he's not likely to get much, if any taller. He could still put on muscle mass though. My cousin was about the same height and weight as Sano at the same age and ended up not gaining any height but he ended up at 260 and played TE in college. So, Sano could be destined to be a 1B. I can't imagine they'd want a beast like that running around in the OF much less playing 3B.
  18. Yeah, he seems pretty cool from what I've seen and I think he has potential to be better than he was with the Philis. I think he's probably the player I look forward to seeing the most going into the season.
  19. Well, looking at the info Citizen's Bank Park had a higher Park Factor tow of the last three years. So, I'd say that the PF thing doesn't really mean a lot.
  20. That's basically how I feel about the situation. You can make an argument either way but being mad about them not signing him is pretty unreasonable.
  21. This is probably the reason Butera makes the team. Doumit isn't a guy you really want out there a lot if Mauer goes down. Then again you don't really like having Butera's bat in the lineup either.
  22. You guys are a real bunch of jackasses...seriously. I really regret even attempting to have a conversation with you guys. I've said Marcum is talented, could be a #2 on most teams if he's healthy! You think it's a no-brainer but it's really not. I keep saying I don't like Pelfrey either.... Lev, if you had a clue you'd know I was refering to next season becaue they'll be somewhere close to $240m in revenue if the numbers I saw are correct. So, $120M is about 50%. Their is no down side? How about giving him $4m and wasting time on him if he can't pitch? S., it helps if you read the entire post. I said "actually a good pitcher AND HAS NO HEALTH CONCERNS". FFS you cannot have an opposing view on this site without people treating you like an idiot. Very disappointed but probably explains why Seth and the others don't seem to bother trying to argue points that much.
  23. I think he's the biggest upside player they picked up this year and could be the best pitcher on the roster. I could see him improving his numbers with the Twins but I guess we'll have to see.
  24. Well, I think I'm done with the subject because apparently it's impossible for certain people to to separate the Twins spending habits from good decision making. I guess you should just toss money around at every guy walking buy even if their arm might fall off and on top of that you are utterly silly to suggest it might be a bad idea. I for one would love to see a $120M payroll but we all know that's not going to happen. Keep going back to the $20M they're supposed to spend this year but it's fairly clear TR has been given a budget that is substantially less than what they promised to spend. Yes, Pelfrey wasn't a good signing when you could have gotten Saunders or maybe even Marcum if inclined to take a risk. Would have been great to get all three or maybe even a big name pitcher instead. However, I'm not going to be PO'd about not spending $4m on a guy that is likely to be injured this year anyway. Believe it or not this isn't a clear cut kickass deal and that's why I'm wishy-washy on it. You guys say, "They got the money and damn it they should spend it!" and I agree to a point but tossing money at players just to say you're spending is never a good idea under any circumstances. You guys complain about not signing guys like Marcum when you should be reserving the anger for not signing guys like Greinke, Sanchez, McCarthy..ect who are young enough to be here a while and are actually good pitchers with no significant injury issues. Granted, these guys might never have come here at all but the fact that they had no intentions to even submit offers is frustrating.
  25. Yeah, he's basically a god #2 starter IF HEALTHY.
