  1. If he doesn't accept assignment, do they still have to pay him? I think he becomes a free agent, which would be a gift.
  2. Seriously? He walked the pitcher?
  3. Another game without two guys eligible to come off the DL, who might give this anemic offense some life. But you don't want to fly four guys across country to maybe win a couple of games. That would be expensive.
  4. i suppose no one would claim him if they DFA him. So they send him out and hope he eventually gets his velo back. If not, oh well.
  5. Based on recent comments, it doesn't look like Gardy wants Pelfrey around until he can hit 94 again. They say it's mechanical. That seems unlikely. He seems like a guy who could throw 95 flat footed if he horses it. He can't horse it because his shoulder won't let him, IMO. Anyway, what happens when he runs out of rope on his rehab and he's still sitting at 88?
  6. Prior to last night, Joe Mauer had six XBHs in more PAs than Hicks. Not to compare them. Just seems like a weak argument for a kid who is barely getting going. He has more power than he's shown thus far.
  7. Yep. There's no rule proclaiming that corner outfielders need to be slow sluggers. If he hits .300/.380/.420 and plays good defense, he can play LF. That was Shannon Stewart's line when he was going good.
  8. I don't know how you play chess. I play it conditionally. I.e. if my opponent counters my opening, I respond accordingly. I don't respond with the appropriate move until I have to. If I try to force the issue, I typically end up at a disadvantage. As to your statement about having both Fuld and Sizemore on the roster, it's not ideal. They are redundant. I'd rather have Sizemore. But I would not want two left-handed hitting fourth outfielders. If Sizemore is DFAd (not terribly likely, IMHO), you claim him. When Fuld is ready, you send him out on a rehab assignment. When that's done, you have a decision about which one to keep. This is how GMs do their jobs. They typically delay decisions until they need to. Decisions usually become easier with time if you let the players show you which ones to keep based on performance.
  9. ^^This. I recognize we all have different attitudes about the best way to develop guys. Some think players have to master each level, except in rare cases like Mauer. I don't think there's a hard and fast rule. Each player develops differently. Until recently, I thought Hicks could benefit from seasoning in a low-pressure environment. But he seems to be improving. Right now, it's not even an option to send him down. But even when it is, if he keeps playing like this, he does't appear to need the seasoning after all. At any rate, why make that decision before it is possible, and appears necessary?
  10. Wandy, Pelfrey, Correia. Yawn. Wake me when they bring the real arms up.
  11. My response exactly. Then I thought perhaps he was suggesting that we DFA Correia and bring up May or Meyer, following Pittsburgh's lead. If so, I would say, yes, preferably Meyer.
  12. Not a fact. Your prediction. Your opinion. I disagree. He was a top prospect for a reason. He has shown flashes of brilliance. He needs to take it up a notch, consistently. The only way to find out is to give him a chance. It's similar to Dozier at this time last year. One failed year followed by a demotion. Started slow in 2013. Imagine if we had demoted him just as he started turning the corner. We can only speculate at how that would have stunted his development.
  13. This. I see Sizemore as an upgrade over Fuld: a fourth outfielder. Hicks seems to be turning a corner. We need to find out if he's a major leaguer. The place to find that out is in the major leagues. If he regresses again, by all means, send him down to work on specific things. But now is not the time.
  14. Kinsler >> Fielder. Moreland > Profar. Tigers = win.
  15. Here's a call: On July 1, Aaron Hicks will have a higher OPS+ than Bonifacio.
  16. OK, you might have been the only one clamoring for Sizemore. And the Bonifacio thing is hindisight. He's proven OK for the Cubs. Lucky them. Going into the season, he was replacement level at best. You don't give a replacement player in his 30s the starting job for a rebuilding team.
  17. Nobody was saying we should sign Sizemore. He looked washed up. Done. Lots of people thought Bonifacio was a good fit. I did not. I still don't, for the reasons I claimed.
  18. It would all make more sense if they had just been more patient last year. They were out of contention. He had actually made a lot of adjustments. He got hurt and struggled when he returned, so they sent him down. Bad decision. It wasn't like his replacements set the world on fire, but they lost the opportunity of learning whether or not he should start this year in the majors, or he needed more AAA seasoning time. Now we're in the same boat. Don't make the same mistake again.
  19. Sizemore is not a center fielder anymore. Bonifacio made some sense. His OPS last year was slightly better than Hicks. But if you're trying to build a winner, and you are not likely to contend this year, you don't hand the starting job to a guy like Bonifacio. It's all hind sight.
  20. He's taking six and seven-pitch at bats. Fouling pitches off. Working counts. He's working for his walks. I watch about every game on Gameday and his at bats are some of the longest on the team.
  21. I don't buy the thing about preparation. He works hard. He studies film. He takes extra batting practice. I actually think he overthinks stuff. He could benefit from relaxing and letting his natural ability do some of the work. He needs to start having fun.
  22. They had enough depth going into this year: Hicks and two replacement players. All they had to do was hold onto the depth they had. When Fuld came along, they could have DFAd Presley for that upgrade, keeping one guy with options in case of injury.
  23. I just think he deserves a little patience. He's a notorious slow starter throughout his career. He's starting to show signs of breaking out of (yet another) early season slump. He needs to make better contact, for sure. But his ability is much higher than what he has shown so far. I hope they let him play for a while and see how it goes.
  24. The fault lies with two mistakes this year--Bartlett for Presley and then Fuld for Mastroianni. They screwed up on the first one, but they had a chance to make it right if they had DFAd anybody but Mastro when they claimed Fuld. If they had simply DFAd Bartlett while they waited for his retirement papers to go through, they could have optioned Mastro.
  25. You need two guys who can play center. Hicks and Fuld are the only two left on the 40-man, unless you count Santana. They're treading on thin ice with only one active CF. I don't think sending Hicks down is even an option when Fuld comes back. Arcia for Hermann Willingham for Cola Fuld for Santana
