  1. I disagree! But he is fully aware that the "Twins ain't the Yankees", and that huge budget is not available to him. We need to wait until the off-season and see what happens. There will be talent, pitchers and hitters, available. A repeat of the previous off-season will mean 2014 will be very much like 2013. Wishin' an' hopin'?--sure go ahead. But if you're in that camp, please preface your posts with "I bought a lottery ticket today".
  2. Souhan wrote a press release for the FO. He laid the groundwork for trading veteran players for "hopefuls" (who have very low salaries) under the guideline that the Twins need to improve in every aspect of the game. The veil has been lifted and it has been acknowledged that the emperor has no clothes. There will be 100,000 posts between now and the start of the 2014 season discussing what should be done, what was done, what shouls have been done and what will happen in 2014. But, unless there are some very big changes in the Active Roster for 2014, there will be no basis to think the corner has been turned and success is at hand. It's nice to say there will be five new rookies next year, but sadly few rookies make a big splash--though when experieced, they may well become stars.
  3. You sort of answered your own question. The pitcher selection, development, and promotion process has obvious flaws. Also, there is the belief that more minor league years will "fix" this pitcher. Again and again. Cut the "misses" sooner and clear the path for others to move through the system faster.
  4. Why trade [now]? Neither of these teams will do anything this year. Any trade between the Twins and the Mets can be done in the offseason.
  5. It seems like there is a pattern: year 1, promote pitcher A to the Twins, then a bit later option him back to Rochester; year 2, same as year 1; year 3, same as years 1 and 2; year 4, promote A to Twins, later DFA pitcher A. Something needs to change.
  6. Those guys are the BB equivalent of what is found in hot dogs.
  7. "...he doesn't see eye to eye with manager Tom Kelly." Mystery solved.
  8. Changing the subject again? I stated I was opposed to trading perkins because he was too valuable to "flip" for some package of "hopefuls". My original post was an objection that Perkins is "elite". In my opinion he must earn that distinction in the playoffs. That post received remarks like: "there's only one closer...". Which I respond there are more than one. These RPs have been in the playoffs with some success--just not as much as Papelbon's (which I also alluded to). Yet another flippant response which avoids the original post. I'm through here.
  9. Closers with playoff experience with teams not in top 5: Papelbon --PHL F. Rodriguez--MILW F. Rodney--TB H. Street--SD Crain--CWS, note playoff exp as a set up man. Closers or former closers R. Betancourt--COL J.J. Putz--AZ The "degree of eliteness" is probably in descending order, these guys have credentials, and there are more than one. A bit less PA would be appreciated.
  10. I like Perkins and believe he should be retained, but calling him an elite closer? Perkins has zero post-season credentials. He can't be elite until he has "done it in the big time".
  11. Returning to the thread..."where are we now?" A full realization that this team is and was not (and won't soon be!) a strong team making charges to (much less through) the playoffs. OK, a near frame-off rebuild is what is happening--basically new everything. Trade ____, or_____, or even _____? Quite frankly I don't there is much that is actually tradeable. What/Who veterans that are suggested for trade have huge flaws. These veterans are likely better served to "put a better 9 on the field" than to trade them. True, the team could empty the minors of all of the top prospects--recall 2011? There was an outcry about watching minor leaguers, paying major league prices, in a brand-new stadium that was premised on having the money to put a good team on the field. It is an option--maybe even the best one--but it doesn't permit TV commercials with people singing "We're gonna win Twins, we're gonna score...".
  12. Yes, it can. BB players are not machines--they are people. They have a life outside of BB. By not trading Willingham (who did not publicly request a trade) the Twins can show future FAs that the Twins don't just see them as a thing, but as a person. That FAs aren't just a "collectible" to be swapped for a profit, such that said player can believe that if he signs with the Twins he will stay there until his contract expires (barring a request for trade). Span wasn't a free agent, and truth be told, he was sent to a better place.
  13. It's difficult to get excited about 16 year-olds whom I know nothing about. I wish them well.
  14. Last time I checked there are no OFers on the 40-man roster, who aren't on the DL,that are not on the active roster. Why on earth would the Twins send Parmalee down? Who would/could replace him? Also, there are only 4 OFers on the Active Roster so demoting Parmalee leaves an OF of Arcia, Hicks, and Thomas. Whew. Others on the Active Roster have no business being a regular OF.
  15. Part of this season is to determine who is part of the solution. It's really tough to lose Monday's game--but people have to answer the challenge. Exposing Burton and Duensing to a pressure situation was expected: they have been there before, have been given contract extensions, and yet have struggled of late. It's reasonable to conclude that the bullpen is not fixed and needs several upgrades. I think the Twins need to revamp their philosophy of bullpen pitchers and their development.
  16. If Walters were claimed would anybody care?
  17. Those who fantasize about the Twins making a run for 1st place this year should be advised that DET's remaining schedule is very weak. 49 games (all 19 vs CWS!) against the ALC, and only 18 games against opponents that are actually challengers for a playoff spot. I expect that they finish this season like they did last season. The Twins are rebuilding.
  18. Maybe the Twins should sign a free agent pitcher this off-season to take Meyer's place in the 2014 rotation?
  19. When the official scorer changes an error on Florimon to an error on Morneau does that improve Florimon's UZR?
  20. My point exactly! Willingham, et al were not signed to make the team a contender, they were signed to make the team not stink. They were 66-96 last season, what do you think they would have done without the four that were signed prior to the 2012 season? It might have been epicly ugly if the Twins were forced to promote from within to take those roster/lineup spots. It shows that the FO was sensitive (to a point) to the W/L record and were not totally slash and burn (cf FLA and HOU) while under reconstruction.
  21. Which begs the question--why bother to win at all? They signed Willingham, Carroll, Marquis, Doumit, Correira, Pelfrey, to win--what meaningless games? Maybe to avoid the appearance of trying to lose in order to select sooner in the draft and cut budget. Or perhaps it really was to put a better team on the field and not repeat 2011 (which is my opinion)?
  22. Trade Perkins for low-level minor leaguers? Seems like at cross-purposes to present policy of signing a few "value-veterans" to add a few more wins while rebuilding the team. I am convinced if that trade were consummated the Twins would repeat their 2011 disaster: late July to end-of-season collapse.
  23. Morneau appears to have "solved his swing problem" and is slugging power hits. The month of July will be really important for him. I can envisions two scenarios where the Twins actually sign him to a contract for 2014 and beyond.
  24. Oh, my brother I fear you have lost your perspective. These mere "casual fans" are people who have something--it's called a "life". They are spending some time to live a part of this "life" that is called "entertainment". Generally this "entertainment" thing is best when shared with others, especially with those who mean a great deal. The purpose of this "entertainment" should not depend on the outcome of the BB game but rather that the time was spent with those that we care about. I recall as a 9 year old going to a Twins game as part of a "knothole gang", admission was $0.50, we wore a stick-on thing and sat in the RF bleachers. The weather was nice, and I had a good time--even though the Twins lost. If that makes me a "casual fan"--well, I can live with that. But I believe that that is what Baseball is all about--getting together with people and sharing an experience and enjoying yourself.
