  1. Definitely pitch inside--inside corner of the strike zone. Let them jump back--and watch it called a strike! No need to actually hit them--just jam them!
  2. He didn't--he signed up to his first year of free-agency. In short he agreed to the value of his contract during "the controlled years" (arbitration). It's sort of like buying insurance--he gets paid even if injured, or becomes "awful".
  3. You could have said the same about Toronto--last year--and now look at them? Remember when darn near everybody criticized KC for 'going all-in' to acquire Shields?---and...? How often was Detroit criticized for "all-in"--yet they emerged from the ashes of the late 90s-early '00's to 5 ALDS including 2 WS appearances. And people are actually going to watch their games in Detroit! Taking risks to succeed is "risky". Alternately, a team can sit on its hands, control payroll, and play in a near empty stadium--and still make a profit!
  4. Examine the photo and the title used for this thread. I would modify as following: put Ryan in a Sabres Jersey and re-title "Playing for the Draft Choice--because This Isn't Our Year".
  5. Let me see...Ryan ponders, "Good thing I saved almost all of my prospects--especially the 'top' ones." "The bullpen won't be a problem next year because...(?) 1) RPs are easy to get in the off-season 2)they are cheap too 3) next year one of my SS options will 'take charge' and solve that problem and 4) I am positive that one of my back-up catchers can bat a buck-fifty so I can rest Suzuki and get him back to two-fifty!"
  6. Hence my estimate of 2-3 starts for Duffey.
  7. No. The Twins are not in a pennant race. Go observe your toilet flush. The Twins are in that peak volume swirling around--just before the inevitable glug-glug.
  8. Can anybody see beyond their nose? Many of you have posted "play the prospects". So, tonight one of them starts--why the angst? Likely three starts to assess Duffey's potential as a SP for next season. There will be trades made, free agents signed, and next years team determined before 6 months elapse. Is Duffey viable? As for the selection of Duffey, he was likely the most successful of the "college RPs into SPs program". The Front Office needs to justify that concept given the stench of the bullpen and that said college RPs were the most likely to "fix the bullpen"-but couldn't because the FO "made them" into SPs. They (FO) need a success story to justify "their concept"--and Duffey has been declared "it". Tonight is the first test.
  9. Amazing how so many grab the "Arcia Strawman". It's like he's the panacea--despite previous experiences when he was part of the problem.
  10. Considering that's almost exactly what happened for '07 (less the injured players--who were stars!), I am inclined to agree with you. Hunter, Pelfrey, the Eduardos, and the rest of the gang will be extended to "lace 'em up in '16!"--Plus, Nolasco returns!
  11. OK. That attitude is what permits the team to put a competitive but not great team on the field--"and call it macaroni". I recall from the first few seasons of the Twins my dad saying "fifth place (or fourth, or third), that is a good season..." like we should be happy with fifth, fourth or third out of ten. Only the pennant winner gets to the WS, thought I, yet why should I be pleased with ...less? The public built the MET for (actually the Giants) for a MLB team, though I didn't know that then. So I figured "their money, so what?". But wait, with a virtual gun at our head ["stand and deliver"], "build us (another) stadium or else". We as the public are more than mere fans (sheep to be sheared) we have cold, hard cash into this enterprise--we earned more than a wave of the hands, and a verbal dismal (basically a "not yet"). So yes, I take strong exception to what is going on at the top.
  12. Jepsen's "performance" left much to be desired, but if your team can only muster 1 run on 3 hits in 9 innings--your team is in deep "trouble".
  13. Maybe Kevin Jepsen gets a chance to redeem himself today? Though heaven help him if he gets his butt kicked. The wrath from TD will be unbearable.
  14. Ryan said he would Ramos for Capps again? Did Ryan make the Ramos for Capps trade?--and not Bill Smith? Did Ryan make the other trade (Tampa Bay--Garza,Bartlett for Young also? Hmm.
  15. Consider the view of the third dog on the sled team.
  16. The image I have is the #3 dog on the sled.
  17. Nobody has a bullpen tonight. PITs 4-run lead evaporated faster than alcohol. Perkins another dinger!? Yikes. Walking Sano was foolish--but PIT lucked-out. Woulda served him right for a single and a fly ball to send it to the 10th. Oh well tomorrow. ETA: notice how the NYY opened-up another can of whupazz?
  18. No post-season? Baloney! Rausch had only one blown save and the Twins still won the game anyway. The Twins won the AL regular season (most wins) despite phoning in the last two weeks.
  19. I don't have a link--but there was an article in the Strib {about trades} that illustrated the logjam in the OF that stated "there isn't a role for Arcia...and that he is [available]"--and it was mentioned that he may well hit 30 HR in a season too. That list included: Buxton, Hicks, Hunter, Rosario, Santana, Kepler and Sano (and maybe even more!). Given this long list, clearly there are too many names to play (or roster) all of them and that in addition to Arcia several more from this list should be "made available" to obtain long-term solutions as well as immediate help.
  20. Expensive rentals? There have been quite a few trades already announced that wasn't a rental (the player can/will remain) or wasn't expensive. If "winning in 2015" was secondary to "development" then why the accelerated promotion of Buxton and Sano? Why was E. Santana signed (he would have been available next year!) Why is Suzuki played to near exhaustion (remember all the time off Mauer required [pre-concussion])? Suzuki has got to tire just as much Mauer as did when he was the Catcher. If player development was the goal then simply follow that plan and normal player development would avoid 90 losses. I'm sorry the FO has to take the heat for not fixing problems that are right in their face.
  21. They did go "all in" in 2010. Sadly, injuries can strike at any time. Which is why teams have to take advantage of their "good" seasons whenever they come--even if "unplanned".
  22. "Stand Pat"ers--"...they wanted: him, him, the baby Jesus, and the suite revenue...". It turns out, no they wanted three young prospects and an over-the-hill SS who could be traded for even more salary relief and young prospects. It's much easier to do nothing than something (which Oh my might go South) and sit back and sing about "prospects [lottery tickets] and the endless "next year(s)"--also more lucrative. The public (and the players) have so far believed, but if "Stand Pat" is the policy--and things go South--the public will remember that they were sold another empty promise. Sadly, the players might also remember.
  23. "Standing Pat"--is the definition of Twins' trade deadline philosophy. Oh yes, they do buy a curtain from the Goodwill Store, dance a jig, and "call it macaroni". But it is the same as "standing pat". My guess is that the money pail has been emptied for rest of this season and that's why the Twins did not offer a superior package than Toronto's offer for Tulowitski--because they certainly had the goods to do so! Consider Toronto's offer: Reyes--salary dump to match-up the dollars and someone to "plug-in" for Tulowitski immediately; Three prospects--I don't have enough information on those guys--but I am sure the Twins could beat them. What could the Twins have offered to counter?--Nolasco (salary dump), two of these three (D.Santana, Escobar, Nunez), and three "prospect-pitchers" AA and A ball. We could even toss-in Duensing , or Meyer! But I believe it was the money (Tulowitski's salary less Nolasco's salary) that killed any deal with COL. "Same 'ole Twins, cheap, cheap, cheap".
  24. I think the biggest reason for his success--Hicks doesn't have to fit Gardenhire's definition of a CF--all he has to do is be productive and professional.
  25. This has been the tactic of the past four years--disappoint in the first 60% of the season (but not stink)--then bring up the young players, rotate them... . Which causes the rest of the season to be a total disaster. NO! Once the Twins decided to promote the top prospects and "start the clock", the die was cast--play the best and try to win every game and get to the playoffs NOW. If they fail, they fail. But it wasn't because they wouldn't play their best cards.
