  1. Amen. Ryan has to decide who's "it"--and stick with them long enough to show whether a guy "belongs" or not. He's too concerned about "options". GMs get paid to make the tough decisions (correctly hopefully). Wavering back and forth (Chargois is the latest casualty) is counter-productive.
  2. Or any other infielder! If Plouffe is traded (if not, the DFA him) and Dozier is traded (I hope), trading the proven bench INF seems foolish. The consensus that Plouffe wouldn't fetch much and that Dozier's trade value is uncertain I find it laughable that Nunez is going to fetch some hot prospect! At best the Twins receive a minor league player who develops into the next Nunez. A ridiculous trade!
  3. It's self-defeating to trade Nunez--he is one of the few players actually performing well. The Twins are drafting future minor leaguers as we speak. There is no need to trade a bona fide, useful, major league player for a lottery ticket. There is a paucity of useful ,MLB-quality players on this team trading one away because his stats may decline is ludicrous.
  4. "Toolsy" Outfielder--they never get past the Twins! The clock is running for when the Twins trade another CF.
  5. First, with both Escobar and Sano on the DL makes dumpind Plouffe for "fries" stupid--somebody actually useful would be a different story. Second, there is no reason to rush either Escobar or Sano back to the lineup. The Twins would be better off losing as often as possible and keeping those two in hot tubs so that they are completely healed. Third, Plouffe can be traded as soon as a replacement IF is found (signed) to takeover--and he should net far more than what the Twins received (zip) from eliminating Valencia back in the day. It is becoming apparent that Sano doesn't belong in the field--anywhere. Evidence: Frank Thomas, Ortiz, Fielder. Sano has displayed an uncanny ability to pull a hamstring while on the bases, there is no need to give him further opportunities. Sano will always be subpar in the field, simply keep him at DH and put an end to experimenting. Last, consider trading Sano. Face it, the Twins needs are HUGE--starting pitching, 3B, OF, bullpen. A trade might fetch solutions to many problems--and for a guy who is a defensive liability. It is also likely Sano is never signed by the Twins to the monster contract anyway. It's likely better to do it now before the rest of baseball decides the Twins will lose him anyway.
  6. I favored keeping Buxton in Rochester--but this is for injury replacement. However, should (cross fingers and say a rosary) Buxton hits above expectations (including working the count and taking walks!) I advocate leaving Buxton as the regular CF. D. Santana has not won a starting job! Hence, there is no reason to hand it back to him when he returns--Santana is actually the placeholder for Buxton, not vice versa! If Buxton stumbles (Boo!)--well that's another story. But, Buxton should start every game at CF while Santana is gone. Patience.
  7. I believe there were several factors: money, but it was 1st or even 2nd; the Twins were enamored with Mientkevitz and his defense--and were willing to pay a salary premium (as well as a spot on the Active roster) to keep him at 1st instead of moving Ortiz to1B (who played pretty good Defense!); Gardenhire's love for a 3rd catcher and perceived need for RH hitting; but, I believe the most important factor was the clash between Ortiz and the Twins over his hitting style--the clash of egos! The Twins won the ego battle but the overall war!! Mientkevitch was easily tradable and given a full year at 1B Ortiz could have fetched a very tidy sum in a trade after the 2003 season. So foolish.
  8. The owner(s) selects the Front Office and sets operational constraints. The Front Office selects the coaches and sets operational philosophy according to constraints. The coaches implement operational philosophy and provide guidance to the players and send player evaluation to the Front Office (and other feedback). The players perform, but they will take actions (from time to time) that they believe are in their own best interests. The fans (I guess we're lumped in the "everyone" group--and what was our responsibility for this "total system failure"? Outside of folding under the pressure of losing the team by agreeing to substantially fund a new stadium what did we do wrong?
  9. I view the replacement of StP as a "trial balloon" to see if this will mollify the fan base. It won't work for me! StP wasn't running the baseball team. Let me revisit the Pohlad quote of "...total system failure...". If we are to take him at his word (we should!) then he has reduced his choices to three actions to be consistent with his statement. They are: replace the administrators of "the system" because they erred massively; or, replace "the system" because it doesn't work anymore (implying new people to devise/administer a new system); or sell the team because the cost of fixing everything is too high. Trial balloons of mock change won't work!
  10. D. Santana has a convenient injury. So well-timed with Buxton's hot streak in Rochester too!
  11. If a new President is hired and there isn't a thorough housecleaning of management--this is just another shuffling of chairs and placecards--absolutely no change at all! I wouldn't be surprised if the Twins make another deflect and deny move by screaming "Change" without there actually being any. But all the spin in the world won't work after the next disappointing season. Then back to deflect/deny and either actually change--or continue this charade until the team is sold to a new owner.
  12. Just what Twins fans need--a minor league team plus Joe Mauer.
  13. No, he isn't blocked. First, he is in the major leagues. Second, he will be replacement value defensively at 3B like he was in the minors, and third he is preventing himself from being a top-hitter--not Plouffe. Sano is the future Prince Fielder (at best)--refer to todays thumbnail about fielder and TX.
  14. The Twins best prospects aren't "stuck", they just haven't played their to the majors. There's a huge difference between earned promotions and "open mic" promotions. I'm reading "promote [him] because we need help, I like [him], and I can't stomach [who is there now]".
  15. If we juxtapose Brunanski's comments, the pay structure that overweights HRs, and the actual team results I think we can draw some alarming conclusions. It appears that players are committed to hitting HRs rather than to the more traditional approach to focusing on OBP and sprinkling-in the occasional HR swing based on experience and intuition. The disparity between Bases-empty HRs and HR with a base-runner(s) is likely due to opponents pitchers being more focused when there is someone on base (cue Bert's comment about bases empty HRs). I think players just wish to maximize their value on the open market with the expectation (Hope?) to sign with a different team. It's as if the players view playing for Minnesota as just another rung on the ladder like the Rochester Red Wings until they can play for a "real major league" team. In short, they are playing for themselves and "nuts" to this team.
  16. Gigantic flaws in philosophy. 1) The need to extend Hughes past three years--even if was very successful. Hypothesize his continued success for discussion purposes. Hughes is only one pitcher and several are needed, trade him off after 2.5 yrs to a top contender for a bucket of prospects. Added benefit to a trade--money not spent on Hughes is used to sign top amateurs and retain up-and-comers. The Twins were in rebuild mode and Hughes (others too!) were signed to be a bridge to the rebuilt (and contending) team. 2) The Twins weren't a contender--nor would they until the filling pipeline of new talent proves themselves competent MLBB players--years are required! 3) Foolish for the Twins to commit huge money (and years!) to a 32-plus year-old Hughes. The Twins wouldn't "be there" yet, his (expected) gigantic salary can be better spent on multiple younger players. 4) Hypocritical to claim "...poor, mid-market team" and then claim it's a priority to spend $100MM+ on a 32+ year old starting pitcher.
  17. Whilst everyone mocks ABW's K-rate, have you been watching Sano lately? I read where he leads MLB in total strikeouts. Last night: 3Ks, a hustle beat-the-throw to 1B (well done!) force out, and the game-ending (sacrifice) fly out to CF (and Sano represented the winning run!). Combine his lack of defensive value, why is he still with the Twins rather than in Rochester? Is it because Kepler is injured? Or, does Sano have a "scholarship"?
  18. I wouldn't have guessed that you had taken a Big Gulp of the Twins Kool-Aid about "no good players available when it's our turn to draft". Other teams found players--or shall I say were able to develop major league players, while the Twins are stuck with marginally skilled talent if not outright bums.
  19. The Twins are insanely wedded to the concept of "Minnesota connection". Likely, that was a big factor in retaining Perkins given the Twins were a "big loser" at the time and having a top closer isn't a priority.
  20. Most of the posts seem to be saying: "I want the new GM to do...(follow my orders)". I just want him to build a consistent winning team geared to win the World Series. I expect him to do things "his way".
  21. Once the decision has made to hire a new GM--commit to the new system! Get a rid of the "beer hall gang" reminiscencing about "the old days". It's now a new day! Expect your new GM to bring in his own team to do things "the new way". Of course there is a budget--every team has one--and most likely the first order of business will be to take a meat axe to the present team! Good! A new GM was hired because the "old system totally failed". Hence a new system--one that sends Plouffe, Dozier, Jepsen, and every salary on his way ASAP. Some may have to be kept because they "have contracts" and are untradeable. But, contracts expire--and they don't require replacing with a "similar player!" Don't tie the new GM's hands with platitudes--(like "we like 'home grown' guys"). A budget? Yes, but flexibility is needed so is patience.
  22. It is unfortunate for Chargois that the Twins have so many good and experienced pitchers that he is being blocked (for now). But, the winds of change might allow a chance for JT to get a "cup-of-coffee", I mean "ya never know".
  23. You guys are to be commended, over 440 posts for a 25% team! What loyalty and dedication!
