  1. Tomorrow is June and I started thinking about the July trade deadline which means what to do with Morneau? His batting average has returned to a respectable .294, but he lost his homerun power swing with only two for the year. It's his contract year and the prevailing sentiment at the beginning of the year was to let him go because Parmelee's natural position was 1st base and he was a power hitter. Then Parmelee went into a funk and has only recently started showing signs that he might be having more respectable plate appearances. Morneau is making $14 million through this contract and may not be willing to accept a significant cut. So what does the Twins organization do, trade him now for a prospect or try to lock him in with a less amount of salary?
  2. [h=1]Even with all the holes you discussed, that team has improved. Considerably more that the 2012 Twins first month. While the top end of the rotation is suspect, they are pitching deeper into games…and there is always the possibility that one (or more) of the four or five candidates you mentioned might fill in as nicely as Diamond did last year. My disappointment in the hitters isn’t Hicks, it’s still too early to make that call. For me it’s Plouffe and Parmelee (the P &P duo). With batting averages of .226 & .217, I’m getting discouraged…it’s not like their defensive strengths are securing their spots in the batting order.[/h]
  3. I am in total agreement with Stringer bell that this year is about the development of the three position players solidifying their roles as big leaguers, with Parmelee possibly moving to 1st come trade deadline time. This isn’t the year of solidifying the starting rotation, too many young prospects need more time in the minors. I am hoping that one or two of the Hendriks, De Vries, Walters & Deduno group work their way to a part of the rotation by mid-season, maybe forcing management to move Correia to the bullpen.
  4. I have always thought that Butera was wasting a spot on the bench (and the roster) by taking up space in the dugout. I’m happy to see that Escobar has been working out as a backup catcher which could free up a roster spot. Even though I like Thome (mostly for the memories) I would prefer seeing Collabello or Benson take the open spot.
  5. Dang...I was hopeful that the Twins would go after Saunders for a chance to keep Correia out of the roster...
  6. With two young arms coming off Tommy John (Gibson and Pelfrey) and competing for starting spots, it would be nice if they could be staggered with their respective rehab inning limitation. Maybe one could be limited at the beginning of the year while the other is limited at the end of the year.
  7. I laughed, I cried....it became a part of me....
  8. I was trying to remember what the starting rotation was at the beginning of 2012 and I was having difficulty. That’s probably because the Twins began the year in a state of turmoil (which seemed to never end). As NoCal offered, Baker was gone by opening day with Tommy John and Marquis was late because of the bicycle accident to his daughter. So the rotation started with a Waiting for Godot…I mean Marquis, type of rotation that was rounded out with Pavano, Liriano and Blackburn. The four pitchers they did start also included Liam Hendricks’s first audition (which he failed miserably), I think the Liam Hendriks that returned at the very end of the season was a different pitcher than his initial starts. I am in agreement with everyone that Correia doesn’t seem to add anything to the pitching rotation, but Scott Diamond, Vance Worley, Kevin Correia, Mike Pelfrey and Liam Hendriks Part II are much better than opening day 2012. Hopefully Gibson is limited innings in Triple A and lets Correia watch baseball from the bullpen in June. Better yet…sign Sean Marcum now!
  9. ...with an accent.
  10. Ohhh, You meant Boston.
  11. OK, maybe I was a little down after that Kevin Correia signing…sort of left a bad taste in my mouth. Really can’t recall anyone attempting a positive spin on the acquisition. Thing is, Terry Ryan continues to say that the Twins are not done and they need more starters. Now the Twins have acquired Mike Pelfrey who might have a chance of contributing, depending how he comes back from the Tommy John surgery early last year (kind of the same situation that Scott Baker would have been). I noticed that both of these guys were on the list of pitchers the Twins organization were talking with during the winter meetings, so who's left? One good news story-line is that talks broke down with Liriano; but John Lannon is going to the Phillies and Joe Blanton is going to the LA Angels, leaving the names the Twins have offers (or just conversations) out still in play…Joe Saunders, Shaun Marcum, Brett Myers, Jair Jerrjens, and Vinente Padilla. Sure hope to see a signing from a name in the front of the list rather than the end of the list.

  13. Now that Zack Greinke has signed a $147 million deal with the LA Dodgers, does the log jam begin to unravel? http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/12/dodgers-to-sign-zack-greinke.html Maybe I’m way off, but are Sanchez, Jackson and Lohse the next dominoes to fall? If they are, does that take teams that seem to be in on all the talks with FA starters off the market? I keep reading LA Angles, Red Sox and Royals (obviously there are others), if they spend their Monopoly Money and leave the arena, are the Twins better positioned for Marcum, Saunders or Myers?

  17. I have Hicks replacing Mastroianni in center by mid-season and Dozier winning the 2nd base starting role. 1) CF Mastroianni ® 2) RF Parmelee (L) 3) C Mauer (L) 4) LF Willingham ® 5) 1B Morneau (L) 6) DH Doumit (S) 7) 3B Plouffe ® 8) SS Florimon (S) 9) 2B Dozier ®
  18. Something that came out over the winter meetings is Terry Ryan’s philosophy on payroll, that a team should not pay 50-60% of payroll in three or four guys. Simply stated, it’s not a recipe for success. This seems to be the reason that kept the Twins out of the Zack Greinke and Anibal Sanchez sweepstakes. With Brandon McCarthy signing a 2-year $15.5 million contract, I get the sense that the Twins may not be afraid of a multi-year contract as long as it’s annual is somewhere below $10 million. Does that mean that the contact with Edwin Jackson was only out of courtesy?
  19. Lions, Tigers and Bears, Oh My! …or Lannan, Jurrjens and Myers. Okay, keep hearing a lot of conversations with the likes of John Lannan, Jair Jurrjens and Brett Myers with additional conversations with Kevin Correia, Joe Blanton, Mike Pelfrey, Vicente Padillaand Francisco Liriano. Guess I always knew there would have to be a third tier or scrap bin starter thrown into next year’s rotation, but very limited good names are being mentioned (other than LEN III mentioning Brandon McCarthy). I enjoy hearing that Ryan is doing a lot of talking, just want to hear about better names. Guess reality finally sunk in that Greinke’s asking price of $120-130 million on a five or six year deal is way out of the Twins budget and now Sanchez scoffing at Detroit’s offer probably is a clear signal that he is also out of range. That leaves guys like McCarthy, Jackson, Marcum and Haren as the guys I want to hear about in talk rumors. Hoping Tuesday brings some fun rumors….or signings.
  20. ESPN’s Jayson Stark reported that Jason Marquis will sign with San Diego. Now I can breathe a sign of relief.

  22. Okay, truth be known, I have had my fingers crossed for Sanchez or maybe Jackson. But now after checking greengoblinrulz’s interesting entry, and checking on Amanda McCarthy…I now have moved Brandon McCarthy moved up on my favorite’s list!
  23. I have been enjoying the various predictions of what free agent starter(s) gets added to the Twins rotation and now that the Winter Meetings are about to commence, speculation is now “swinging for the fence”. Does the team sign a top tier starter and maybe a third tier? Maybe two from the second tier leaving some money from the crap bin? The predictions have been plentiful and I have enjoyed all of them. The Los Angeles Times Bleacher Report predicted the Twins sign Brandon McCarthy in one of their “25 Bold Predictions” today. “With several holes to fill, Ryan will have to be fruitful with his money. Brandon McCarthy could provide a great return without spending the vast portion of that money. McCarthy would certainly present a risk, given his shoulder woes in the past. However, he thrived in Oakland over the past two seasons with a 3.29 ERA, and could provide the same kind of production at pitcher-friendly Target Field as well. McCarthy's injury history will limit the overall money he receives—just perfect for a tight Twins budget.”
