1. I have not given Matt Tomshaw his due respect. He should be this months PITCHER of the MONTH in the Twins organization. Despite not being a Top Prospect - I hope he gets his just rewards for an outstanding month. Time for AA promotion. http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20140531&content_id=77612272&fext=.jsp&vkey=news_l123&sid=l123 Tomshaw has been nearly untouchable in the month of May. In four starts that month the southpaw is undefeated with a 4-0 record, a 0.67 ERA and a .209 batting average against. Overall Tomshaw is third on the team in ERA (1.88) and has walked only six batters and fanned out 21.
2. Any word on the OBP machine (Nate Roberts) in Extended? Does he look healthy and where will he end up (A+ / AA)? Same with Lance Ray in Extended? When does J.D. Williams get his much deserved promotion?
3. Walker had a great evening as he almost had 3 home runs. He just missed a homerun (inches / a double) during his opening at bat (against MLB Vet Adam Loewen). He lined out against Loewen in his next AB. Walker had 3 HRs three games this series and 2 were against MLB Vets (Shawn Camp & Loewen). He hit in the 4th hole for the first time in over a month.
4. Why is Stuart Turner placed on inactive list? There had to be several options when Twins decided to place Rosario on Miracle.
5. What will Rosario play while he is with Miracle (2B / CF)?
6. Do you think Rosario will play with Miracle tonight (Thursday - May 29th) and when does Levi Michael come off DL? When he does come off DL will he go directly to NB?
7. Congrats to Adam Brett Walker on winning Twins Player of the Week for the following: http://twinstrivia.com/2014/05/25/twins-minor-league-player-of-the-week-48/ Walker hit .345 with 3 HRs / 2 DBLs / 12 RBI during that span
8. Adam Brett Walker II is hitting .300 over the last 10 games with a .317 OBP (his career norm) and .650 Slugging %. His 4 HRs and 16 RBI in that span (10 games) is encouraging as well. It was especially nice to see him hit 2 HRs against the best pitching staff and team in the FSL (Dunedin). His average sucks, but his production is on pace for what he did last year. His HRs and RBI are also tops in the Twins minor league system. The Miracle just have to put their hits togehter more often as a team. They leave too many guys on base (Especially Walker this year). Let's get one at home tonight now (Miracle).
9. The real question is should HIcks be sent back down (Thats how most of this Sizemore bit started)? The answer is no. It didn't help last year and I don't think it will this year either. Let him learn thru failure and grow from there. It's not like everyone isn't happy with where the Twins are right now anyway. Let's keep rolling the dice and go from there. No one on this board had real high expectation before the season anyway (stop lying). The youngins are learning as they go and can only help with next year. Let them play (good or bad) and build on it. Whether that means moving guys next off season or fixing some minor technical things. These kids and vets are learning how to win together and that is a good thing. Plus the future is not far behind (Meyers / Sano / Buxton).
10. Matt Tomshaw pitched this past Tuesday in Dunedin and gave the Miracle a much needed win after losing a series at home to the Cubs. Tomshaw has been the most clutch and consistent pitcher the Miracle have to date and needs to get that call up to see what he can truly do (AA). He is said to have a great approach in his preparation and understands how to pitch. The Twins owe him (yes owe him) a chance at the next level. If he fails so be it, but Matt Tomshaw deserves a chance to get out of Fort Myers. Here's praying for your chance to see New Britain soon. 91 FB and 4 other pitches to play with. Solid Command. http://www.milb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20140520&content_id=76168578&fext=.jsp&vkey=recap&sid=t509
11. Adam Brett Walker is still struggling at the plate, but is still 3rd in FSL in HRs and RBI. That being said - the Miracle are still in second place and if the season ended today -would be in the playoffs. Walker is on pace for 25+ HRs and 100+ RBI. His walks are up but so are his Ks. He has 4 HRs (2 grand slams) in last 10 days. Let's hope he's figuring it out. He also leads all the Twins minor league affiliates in HRs and RBI as we'll (keeping things in perspective).
12. This year an above average OBP - Next year an above average BA - Let the kid learn while we still have a so so team.
13. Grady Sizemore's stats - And we want Sizemore over Hicks why again? STOP IT!!! BA - OBP - SLG - OPS
.218-- .293-- .336 --.629
14. I would leave Hicks at the MLB level. We have to decide what is important? He is getting on base at a better clip than half the CFers in baseball yet his average is lower. He has a better OBP than Span and Revere according to article I read on this site the other day. Shouldn't we be happy for those baby steps? Which is more important BA or OBP and don't say both because those guys aren't floating around for you to just pick up on waiver wire.
15. Does the Draft have any affect on who goes where since most draftees seem to start at ETown or GCL?
16. I am so curious as to what is going to happen in Fort Myers when Nate Roberts - Lance Ray - Byron Buxton - Eddie Rosario - Levi Michael - come off the DL in the next week or two? There are too many good players on the Miracle line up to just send down to Extended and there are too many good players coming off the DL to start out in Cedar Rapids like they did JD Williams. (JD needs to be at least with the Miracle by now IMO - raw deal if healthy - which he seems to be). Some serious moving pieces coming up in the minors in the next few weeks. I see some release in the future and I'm nervous as to who might be on the fence?
17. I said the above to say, that Aaron Hicks should have been forced to prepare properly many seasons ago in the minor leagues. It should be like putting pine tar on your bat in the on deck circle - Natural - "It's just what we do" philosophy (and learned early in their career).
18. Very Nice Read; That being said - I keep reading that Hicks has been asked to put in more work in the clubhouse watching film of pitchers he is about to face and look for tendencies. Why then do they (Twins) not film games at the minor league levels and have players prepare the same way. If they don't have film to research opponents (budget), understood, but to not film every game for players to analyze themselves is crazy. I heard that players are sometimes / periodically filmed individually so they can analyze thier swings at the lower levels. That would seem to be an inexpensive NEED at the lower levels so that players can learn how to learn off film and make the neccessary corrections. Coaches teach off film everyday in high school. You would think with these $6 million dollar and below prospects that it would be important to TEACH players about themselves beyond hearing what to do. There is nothing like seeing your faults and making corrections. Why wait until they reach the MLB. I fault the organization for it's lack of preparation on how to prepare these players to prepare. THOUGHTS....................
19. Happy to see Walker driving the ball lately. He had a base clearing 3 RBI double two nights ago. He has been better lately with the bases loaded. He hit over .700 last year with bases loaded. Its just nice to see his swing returning slowly. 11 RBI in the last 4 games isn't bad either. 2-4 with 5 RBI last night to seal the game was fun to read.
20. What do pitchers at each level work on? and what would you advise your hitters at each level to work on? What should hitters at the A+ level work on? Plate discipline seems to general of a term. What and how do I make those adjustments? What is the simple gameplan for a hitter?
21. Great Article by Seth on Matt Tomshaw today. Must Read: http://twinsdaily.com/content.php/2973-Unsung-Southpaws
22. I'm saying that I agree with all you are saying. My question is: What will he have to learn at AA that is different than A+? He can make the same mistakes at AA and develop a very similar learning curve. Unless you can tell me the particular things he will learn differently at AA as opposed to A+. I'm truly curious.
23. It was nice to see AB Walker get his hits off one of the Brewers Top prospects (Jed Bradley / 1st Rounder). It was also nice to see his HR was of the Oppo fashion as well. Just need more consisitency. I can actually see him going to AA (midseason) and experiencing the same learning curve struggles. Why make him experience the same struggles at both levels if he can make those adjustments once (hopefully)? What would be the difference in adjustments he would need to make at A+ that were different from AA? Why keep a college kid down in A+ to make the same adjustments twice? Let him make them in AA for 2 years if needed.
24. Walker has been very inconsistent this season. He has failed to get the ball in the air consistently with any authority. That being said: The Miracle are still in first place and have yet to hit thier stride. Walker team ranks: Runs 3rd; Hits 5th; HRs 1st; RBI 3rd; TB 5th; BB 4th (4 back of leader); K's 1st (almost doubling #2); & SB 2nd His 3 doubles; 0 triples; and 5 HRs are the disturbing part of his game this year. The lack of power numbers. The entire team for that matter has shown a lack of power numbers. Miracle are 8th in the League in Slugging; BA; and HRs as a team. Thier .322 OBP isn't what they expected either. I claim - "As Walker Goes - So Do the Miracle". He needs to find that missing "It" and jump start this Miracle lineup like he did last year in Cedar Rapids. I understand new level = new results, but they are much better players than what they are showing thus far. They need that spark and that spark is Walker.
