  1. Back to the actual question in the thread... when the Twins thought they had a real legit chance a few years ago, the budget went up to $115 for players. The team (right or wrong) felt it had a chance and they supplemented their home grown players with a couple of free agents. Didn't work out... but they pu their money where their mouth was... Oh, and I assume if the Twins had given Edwin Jackson 4 years and $40 million (or whatever the Cubs gave him), and he was terrible, I still assume everyone complaining would not be complaining because they spent money.
  2. I'd also add that once you get past the big money of the first 5-6 rounds, the signing bonus incentive vs going to a big baseball college is less. So, rather than draft a bunch of high school guys that likely won't sign, they draft college guys with potential that will sign. The Twins 27-29 round picks (Blatch through Shore) are high-upside high school guys that, as Jeremy said, if there is some extra bonus money, they can throw it at them in mid-July.
  3. The three top ten guys that have not signed (Eades, Slegers and DeMuth) are in the College World Series, likely to sign shortly after elimination.
  4. Along with Stewart, the Twins have been busy: From the Twins: Other top 10 picks that have signed include: third round pickStuart Turner, a catcher from Ole Miss; fourth round pick Stephen Gonsalves, a left-handed pitcher from Cathedral Catholic (San Marcos, Calif.) High School; sixth round pick Brian Navaretto, a catcher from Arlington Country Day School in Jacksonville, Fla.; seventh round pickBrian Gilbert, a right-handed pitcher from Seton Hall University (N.J.); ninth round pick Mitch Garver, a catcher from the University of New Mexico; 10th round pick C.K. Irby, a right-handed pitcher from Samford University (Ala.).Additional draft picks that have signed include: 11th round pick Nelson Molina (INF), 12th round pick Ethan Mildren (RHP), 13th round pick Brandon Peterson (RHP), 14th round pick Zach Granite(OF), 15th round pick Derrick Penilla (LHP), 17th round pick Tanner Mendonca (RHP), 18th round pick Ryan Walker (SS), 19th Jared Wilson (RHP), 20th round pick Jason Kanzler (OF), 21st round pickTyler Stirewalt (RHP), 22nd round pick Alex Swim ©, 23rd round pick Zach Hayden (RHP), 24th round pick Brandon Easton (LHP), 25th round pick Chad Christensen (OF), 30th round pick Tanner Vavra (2B) and 32nd round pick Carlos Avila Jr. (SS).
  5. As of a half-hour ago, Buxton has NOT been promoted. that said, it's no surprise. They aren't even back from Dayton yet. I would expect/assume that once they get home, Jake will get a chance to talk to him (and/or others). As was pointed out in other forums, Kepler has played CF in Extended Spring Training games the last couple of days. Indicates that his elbow is at least "good enough." I guess we'll see.
  6. I don't dive into the DSL too much. The only thing I look at there is age. I enjoy watching the BB/K rate as well. So, Tapia has those two things going for him. He's the kind of guy who gets to the GCL as an 18 year old. The numbers, as you say in a small sample size, are nice... but the numbers mean very little when they're 7 levels from the big leagues. I like to see names like that, put them in my back pocket, get a little excited, and see how things go next year.

  8. On Tuesday morning, we woke up to the news that the bus driving from Ft. Myers to Elizabethton was involved in a fatal accident. Fortunately all of the Elizabethton players and personnel were alright. The driver of the other car passed away. We should be seeing rosters for the E-Twins and the GCL Twins shortly. On Tuesday night, eight Kernels played in the Midwest League All Star game. We should also hear about any player promotions on Wednesday. There were a couple of great performances on Tuesday night, so check out what happened down below. New Britain Rock Cats 8, Erie Thunder 0 Box Score The Rock Cat bats showed up, but the story has to be the performance of Trevor May. 10. These are certainly numbers we don't want to see...
  11. And that's fine, but the only way to do that is to throw pitches, and when you throw pitches, there is a chance that the ball is put in play, especially with better hitters up. The pitches you strike people out on, are also often the pitches that hitters make some contact with, or they take for a ball.
  12. As the GM, Mr. Ryan needs to see what he has in Deduno, Walters and maybe to Albers. He knows what he has in Gibson, and he's a huge part of the future. There's no question about that.
  13. Dozier probably has the shorter leash as a starter... But he can be a very solid utility guy. Florimon seems like if he isn't the SS, he won't be a utility guy.
  14. Based on following Kohl Stewart on Twitter, it's no surprise something is close based on him flying to Minneapolis. Also, his comments from draft night made it pretty clear it wouldn't take too long.
  15. My definition of pitch-to-contact may be different from others and may vary depending on the day. I think pitch to contact equals lack of walks, so maybe something like a BB/9 of less than 3.7 (or 3.5 or some number)... other days, I might say it is a starting pitcher with a K-rate of less than maybe 9 (or 8.5 or something). (Note - I also only include starting pitchers who have to work for more than one inning at a time in this... for relievers, I would hope for more Ks.) I don't think it has anything to do with "bearing down"... 95% (or whatever number you want) aren't going to get a strikeout all the time in that situation, but they may get a weak pop-up, or a double play or something good). "Bearing down" sounds like a form of effort, and I certainly don't question his effort.
  16. I'd assume it's worse than the average pitch-to-contact pitcher... since his ERA is so high. I mean, 95% of pitchers in the big leagues are pitch-to-contact and most have ERAs south of 5.
  17. I also agree... Boer is the top example of that. When he returns from his non-baseball related broken hand, hopefully he's in the bullpen.
  18. I can't imagine anyone would disagree with that.
  19. Very sad... Obviously glad to hear all the people on the Twins bus are OK, but what a scary event! I don't understand why the Twins organization had them hop the bus at that time. They have host families that likely wouldn't mind if they were there one day earlier. They've been in Ft. Myers for three months now. Why have them endure a 14 hour bus ride overnight? Maybe there is some sense in it.
