  1. Liriano had the 4th best whiff/swing rate in 2012 at 28.4%, right between Darvish and Strasburg. His slider is every bit as good as Greinke's or Sabathia's, probably better. There's a role for Liriano somewhere, its obviously not here. I hope he finds a good fit in the NL so we don't have to face him.
  2. Well I have already reserved my 20 game season ticket for 2013, but I am the Twins number one fan. If the FO wants to hook your 7/10er on a season package, they should consider fronting cash early and often in the offseason rather than hoping there are enough leftovers to pick up in January to keep the team from falling out of contention in the opening weeks.
  3. I cry a little bit when Ponder lines up in the shotgun. Defense looked like the 2011 squad again, made the Skins receiving core look like the 2001 Rams. Whatever their gameplan was, it failed fantastically. AVATAR wins again.
  4. Interesting discussion, I am not at all familiar with football metrics. From a casual perspective it looks like Ponder might have been scarred in his rookie year due to all the pressure and the concussion, and now is a little skiddish back there. Seems like every game there are a handful of plays where he abandons the pocket prematurely, often flushed to his left where he is pretty hopeless as a thrower.
  5. Member for 1/2 a year, benhertz finally comes out of the woodwork. Welcome
  6. Gardy is insistent on switch hitting middle infielders. It is why they bit on Eduardo Escobar, they are a suckers for those guys. If the Twins can find time for Mauer at 3B against righthanders, they could bring in a righthanded bat to platoon at 1b or right field when they face lefthanders. Mike Napoli would be ideal, the Twins could finally drop Butera then too.
  7. Anyone still want to trade Span for Storen?
  8. I would like to hear more about the question raised at the season ticket holder meeting re: giving Mauer time at 3b. Gardy answered as if it was something they had been considering; Mauer hadn't heard anything about it.
  9. If he'll sign for another 1yr/$900k, absolutely, yes. You could platoon him with Plouffe and pencil in a .850-.900 OPS at 3b. problem is, the Yankees will pay him more than that. They won't even bat ARod against righthanders late game anymore.
  10. Those ground balls aren't going for hits because he has bursitis in his right knee and hip.
  11. Posey will win handily because he's such a nice boy with a nice comeback from injury story. In truth, its about a 5 way tossup
  12. I wouldn't mind if they kept it either
  13. The A's are going to buy out Stephen Drew. He has a good glove and would make a decent platoon against RHP. edit: on 2nd look, not sure about the glove, I haven't seen him play much tbh. It would be nice to get all those righthanders in the infield a break against RHP though, with someone.
  14. Escobar, Florimon, Casilla, Dozier, Carroll, and now DeRosa. With enough bodies plugging the middle infield, they might attract weak ground balls just by their sheer gravity
  15. Some of these guys who run into shoulder issues after TJ just need to get on and stay on a strength and conditioning program and they are more or less ok. I know JJ was put on a shoulder strength program after he was shut down with shoulder issues in 2011 and came back strong for 2012, although his velocity did dip a little. There is risk there and a high ceiling too. It would be very un Twins like to bring a guy like JJ on board out of free agency but I would be pleasantly surprised if they did.
  16. Yeah even existing customers have to put down the $5 extra for "live" postseason coverage and even then there is the usual "not as good as advertised" disclaimer. So it is evidently just $5 charity to TBS with MLB taking a slice certainly. I've been pulling in streams via this proxy IP all week: 195.138.81.100 port 3128
  17. I don't think the fans get it wrong any more often than any panels, writers, broadcasters, or coaches. Not if you put any value in statistics at all. Heck, look at the hall of fame.
  18. Trivia: In the short history of the the Hank Aaron awrd, 4 winners didn't even get the silver slugger for their position. 2010: Joey Votto 2008: Kevin Youkilis and Aramis Ramirez 2003: Albert Pujols (although he did win a SS for Outfield. Helton took it for 1B)
  19. A 40-something saber nerd who had a long and mediocre playing career, is bilingual, and can articulate to the media something more than the same old cliche'd soundbites. Someone who has also put in a few hours as a manager or assistant coach in the high minors or above so he can hit the ground running. Someone who isn't under contract after 2013 Dave Martinez fits all of the above.
  20. Molitor is on record as "would probably be open to coaching." As long as, you know, the job commitments don't get too imposing or whatever.
  21. I thought Billy Beane had an interesting take on the new wildcard rules. Of course, he said this in mid-summer, before the As locked up the division outright
  22. I imagine they are already under contract, hence the "reassignment." Is that true? I am having a hard time finding out for sure. In the Mackey article, he says all the coaches signed 2 years extensions after 2010, except Gardy
  23. Maybe the FO is milking this period as long as the media and fans continue to mischaracterize some of these moves as "firings," seeing that some fans are satiated by it. Certainly there is no one muzzling Gardy lamenting to the media about losing staff and not being offered an extension. How did this even become particularly newsworthy? There are no guaranteed extensions in any occupation, certainly not sports, and certainly not if you haven't received one by mid-season. The season is over, the contracts expired, that's all. Vavra and Ullger will sign new contracts for 2013, if they haven't already, isn't that more newsworthy? It is interesting how things have been framed. Maybe this story whole thing has taken off better than anyone in the FO could have expected.
