  1. DeVries had an interesting year. He was a pretty extreme fly ball guy. Even with an average HR/FB rate he gave up a ton of HRs, but he was so stingy with walks that the damage wasn't too bad. He fared quite a bit better away from Target Field for some reason. Might be another guy who would benefit from a better 3rd pitch but at this point, I think I would make him my 2nd starter after only Diamond.
  2. If the Twins even knew what BABIP was, they might not have signed Nishioka and his ~.400 BABIP inflated Japanese batting crown.
  3. Again, there would seem to be a disconnect between what these guys believe and the results. I am open to the possibility that L-R-L-R is preferable but nobody seems to have any evidence besides anecdotes.
  4. Right, if its the bottom of 7 and the Yankees are putting up Gardner, Ichiro, Nix/Jeter, Cano, Teixeira, and Granderson, you let Duensing go as long as he can even though Nix is righthanded and Tex will switch over also. Seems clear enough to me.
  5. What good is Carroll at that point? Is the opposing manager going to think twice about intentionally walking Thome or bringing in a LOOGY to face him because there is the looming specter of Jamey Carroll? Presumably the reason you are PH-ing in the first place is because you are either behind or the game is tied.
  6. Is he done? His .786 OPS in 2012 would have been 3rd best on the Twins, behind only Willingham and Mauer.
  7. We'd only get nothing offensively at SS if Gardy insists on starting Florimon or Escobar there. OTOH Carroll would be perfectly serviceable offensively and defensively. If it were me, I would roll with Carroll/Dozier to start, with Escobar as the super util/3rd catcher. Then you can carry a bench bat and a 13th pitcher. I just don't see the point of carrying 2 defensive specialists on the bench unless you are confident the offense will be giving you plenty of leads to protect.
  8. I would argue that Dozier's defense was adequate. And Hicks/Benson/Mastro are fine defensive replacements I think. The jury is still out on Parmelee. Mackey said the team's biggest weaknesses were pitching and defense. It was actually, pitching and hitting (25th in wOBA and wRC+ since 2011) . Fielding, they were middle of the pack. It gets back to the penchant for this club to overvalue all glove, no hit types and waste roster spots on them.
  9. The Twins defense the past two years / rank / median UZR: 29.5 / 12th / -65.1 RZR: .828 / 21st / .835 OOZ: 967 / 12th / 962 FP: .982 / 21st / .983
  10. I understand the fear. I am dubious that there's any truth to it. I haven't been able to find anything on the interwebs that tests the hypothesis of a primer effect when there are multiple same-handed SPs in a rotation pitching back to back.
  11. What we are reading into is this They don't have any lefthanded starters, by my count. Evidently that is something GardyAndy are concerned about.
  12. I wish Provus would tell us what Gibson is throwing. Sounds like he has had a couple really wild pitches.
  13. It would be mildly interesting to listen to Barreiro if Duensing makes the rotation. (He has an outstanding pledge to not mention the Twins for the entire month of April if Duensing is in the rotation).
  14. The Twins will play what, 8 games in Fenway and 4 in Yankee Stadium? I would have no problem if Gardy wanted to spot-start Duensing (or someone else) as a special case. A good excuse to give a guy 5 days rest or whatever. But I don't think 12 games in those parks is enough to commit 30 additional starts to a guy. But I do wonder, overall, are the AL's parks favorable to RHP or LHP? As for the lineup analogy, I would argue that L-R-L-R lineups only supports my point. Managers go L-R-L-R to avoid mismatches from the opposing bullpen, so they are more or less rendering the handedness of the starter moot. Look at what the Indians did this offseason. They got tired of getting shut down by lefthanded starters so they went out and balanced their lineup by adding righthanders to it. It seems to me that so long as that is the prevailing wisdom, there's no need for "balancing" your rotation by handedness.
  15. Is there any reason to start a lefthander over a righthander anyway? Is there evidence that a rotation L-R-L-R is any better than L-L-L-L or R-R-R-R? This idea that you need to have "balance" in a rotation, is there any foundation for it?
  16. I don't think so. a 2-run double when the game is 0-0 in the first won't score as well in terms of WPA as a 2 run double when the game is 0-0 in the 8th. But there is value to playing with an early lead, or increasing that lead (or chipping away at an opponent's lead early in the game), that WPA doesn't capture. edit: and likewise striking out with the bases full in the first inning is just as damaging as striking out with the bases loaded in the 8th inning. Or near enough as to not really make a difference.
  17. Its interesting that Worley has a reverse platoon split so far in his career too. Normally changeup-heavy pitchers have that. Suggests to me that he might benefit more from a better braking pitch that he can throw to RHBs, but maybe its just SSS. A new/better change would never hurt either.
  18. I guess I assumed he did split them. The way that pitch moves, to my eye that can only be from a split.
  19. What is the difference between a split-change and a splange? If I am understanding it, the only difference between Doc's pitch and Burton's is the fingers they use. Trigger and middle for Doc, Middle and ring for Burton.
  20. What a meager request from a manager on his way out the door. A league min bench bat for the 25th roster spot. I would be curious to know who/why it would get vetoed.
  21. Burton throws a splange too. I wonder if those two have talked about it, Burton might have a different take than Halladay.
  22. The Twins did give up the most homers of any team in the league though, behind only Toronto. There are inverse correlations between K% & BABIP, k% & HR/FB, and K% & LD% If you miss fewer bats then other teams, then you will also miss fewer sweet spots of bats. More balls will be put in play, more balls will be hit hard. Hitting a ball with a bat isn't a totally random event.
  23. I'm streaming the radio broadcast on mlb.tv.. There's no video for today's game. I can't help it, but I am liking what I hear so far this spring. They are scoring runs in bunches.
  24. Honestly I think your best bet would be to tweet that question to this guy:
  25. Less. He didn't sign till March when he signed with the Cards either. He'll wait, someone will go down, and he'll get a nice payday.
