  1. What worries me is that TR was so defensive about all of this and the evidence that he produced to support the signing. How many times did he refer to someone telling somebody else something about "the pitcher formerly known as >"? We have always known that the Twins are a "good ole boys" group. We have watched some deserving/capable players get no chance or dumped for years, because they didn't click with Gardy or whoever. Now we are spending legit money on guys that have almost no chance of being a positive addition to the rotation. I kinda want to keep going about why ">" has no chance but really I wanted to say that we need to remind TR of his words next year when this all implodes in Early May
  2. I saw someone earlier say 2.5 WAR. ??? I see 0.6 which is much less attractive. I have a feeling that we are being lulled to sleep. Nick the fact that he would be our opening day starter should make all of us depressed, at least it does me. Seems like he is a reliable, durable 3-5, that would probably make a playoff rotation.
  3. I like that he is left handed, and thats about it. I look at the numbers and I see a more expensive Correia. Worse opp OBP, worse opp OPS, little better ERA, worse WHIP. If we think he could be trade bait, great. I love signing guys that can bring talent back in a trade. Correia probably not, more likely a Blackburn situation. I used to like the idea of Saunders, until I looked a little deeper. What am I missing?
  4. I agree with many that think we should be pursuing more pitchers with higher strikeout numbers. But... It seems to me that Ks can be overrated. Walks, in my opinion are a very bad thing for a pitcher. I think we all agree that OBP and OPS are better metrics by which to judge a hitter. Well how about judging pitchers by their opp OBP or OPS? I think that this is happening much more than we think. For pitcher with more than 120IP Correia is number 106 in K/BB ratio, 70 in OBP and 75 in OPS. Which is a better metric by which to judge a pitcher? How often he lets men on base (to potentially score) and how hard is he hit? Or, a ratio that is affected by HOW an out occurred not THAT it occurred. I don't like the Correia signing or letting Baker walk. I don't like the Pelfrey and Harden signings with nothing else but hope. I don't like that we didn't pursue more quality. But, maybe Correia is actually not as disastrous as we think.
  5. I have to disagree with an assumption made in a previous post. An argument was made for not overpaying for better pitching as to not block the younger guys. I can a agree with that if no 2 year contracts are handed out to bottom of the rotation guys. Gibson/Hendricks/whomever, is going to be blocked by correia. Not by a 1-3 type. We all know that correia is gonna have to be absolutely terrible to not be in the rotation. Then he just gets moved to the pen instead of being sent down, thus blocking other younger guys who deserve a shot ala slama.
  6. Myers 3.30 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 160 SO 168 IP avg last 3 years Marcum 3.70 ERA, 1.27 WHIP, 109 SO 173 IP avg last 3 years Saunders 4.07 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 112 SO 196 IP avg last 3 years Correia 4.21 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 89 SO 156 IP avg last 3 years 1st off. If the Twins mgmt is so dead set against the 2 year $14-15 million deal, they certainly didnt' show it by signing an inferior player for slightly less. If Correia can get 2/10, than Saunders and Myers and Marcum look pretty good at 2/14. I am sorry but Myers for 2/14 looks damn good. Myers is a different class of pitcher than Saunders (lack of strikeout ability), Marcum (durability), Correia (suckability).
  7. Five million a year wasted! I will bet money his ERA will be higher this year than those two previous years. There is zero chance he will magically cut a whole run off of his ERA. So why spend 10 million and lock up two years when Deduno, Devries Swarzak, Walters, etc can do the same for minimum? How much money have we wasted over the last 5 years on washed up pitchers or never has beens? Those numbers have to add up to something substantial. Like enough to sign 1 real pitcher to the kind of deal it would take to get them here.
  8. I used to think that trading Willingham was a good idea, now I am not so sure. Detroit is going to own this division for a few more years and slap hitters are not going to beat them regularly. I like a good OBP but we need the power Josh provides.
  9. Wow! Detroit is gonna be a handful next year. It's scary to think that they are going to be deep enough to handle some prolonged slumps. Imagine having Torii Hunter as a back up luxury. It must be nice.
  10. I understand your point John and even agree with the data analysis. But, I think there is something else that others have obliquely alluded to. The Twins made the playoffs for years in a fairly consistent fashion. Teams like the White Soxs and the Tigers had to squeak in or missed all together. But those teams have had far more recent success in the playoffs. I know this proves your point, but maybe we need to be looking at how our team is built. Verlander tanked and maybe helped kill their season, but he also made their postseason. I would always put my money on Verlander over anyone else, because most of the time he wins. The Soxs (in the past) and the Tigers also went all in on offense, even to the detriment of their defense. Cabrera at 3rd had nothing to do with defense, only providing a spot for Fielder. Worked out well. Meanwhile people are talking about how we need some defensive upgrades. Pitching and Offense. Period. I am tired of a successful season being 3 and out in the playoffs. I think Twins fans used to be a bit smug about how our team was so consistent as opposed to the Tigers and Sox. I know I no longer am. Maybe the were right....
  11. Meet the twins newest starter. Apparently we actually traded a bucket of balls for him, but we hear he has a rubber arm. http://www.baseballrampage.com/Baseball/Baseball-Accessories/1217/Easton-Deluxe-Batting-Tee.html Carroll just called and said he didn't think much of his stuff. Said he could hit him all day long.
  12. Guthrie. Ick. Rockies choked on him this year. Better with Royals, but we need to not be picking up the scraps from their table.
  13. Did I get the questions right?
  14. I am going to have to disagree on that point. Through the first four months of the year Carroll's AB/OPS. April-84/.570, May-87/.607, June-80/.710, July- 71/.506. Without June in there he was close to a .560 OPS, pathetic. Even with June it was only around .600. How is that earning AB? True he does play good defense, but we have some young guys that do ok in the field. Dozier, Florimon, and Escobar could all end up as utility types, or maybe one breaks through. We won't know if Carroll takes 500 ABs next year. To answer Nick's original question, Carroll fits in on a team that is trying for the playoffs, as a high AB utility guy. Which we are definitely not.
  15. Haven't we been in this situation for like 6 of the last 8 years. Carroll is a utility infielder. He is capable of producing at the plate, but we are seeing his ceiling right now. So what if he is performing now. When he was handed a starting role, he helped kill the season, and now that he has zero pressure he is producing. Pass. He should not become a lock for even second base anytime soon. He should need to compete for his job next year. Dozier, Florimon, Escobar, and Carroll are very similar in my mind. Yes, the last two can play third, but that doesn't make them worthy of a scholarship. I would rather give Dozier and Florimon a chance to start the year, with Escobar or Carroll as utility. I have a difficult time trusting that Carroll will produce at this level consistently next year. My two sense
  16. Not a lock, but strong consideration. That pitch was not an obvious ball. In the first third of its flight it is heading for the outside of the plate. when the hitter is deciding to swing, it looks like strike. Dedunos problem is with that much movement, painting the corners is nearly impossible. Also, I agree that Deduno would be a disaster out of the pen. He is going to walk some guys, but the beauty of what he has been doing is that over the course of a game, he makes up for it with ground balls and weakly hit flys. Short appearances could magnify his issues.
  17. I think that this is the time to trade Span. Like so many others have said, we have young players to plug in and eventually our defense will even see an upgrade because of the move. However I think it is unfair to Span to blame him for not shifting around the outfield. Does he want to move away from Center, probably not. Is that his call to make, probably not. But more important than either is that his trade value is much higher as a quality Centerfielder than as a great defensive corner outfielder. We are trying to get people to buy high on him, that means advertising him at a higher value position.
  18. Gardy would rather bring Capps back then have that no good rabble rouser. There are intangibles they look at when deciding who to sign. Who cares if he is a slam the door closer. Can he do magic tricks and make Rick feel like he's doing a good job.
  19. I'd say you did very well with your projections. Benson and Wimmers were just plain unfortunate. Thanks for the update.*
  20. Heck yes. Send it.
  21. I don't think any of us would expect for changes to be made based on this. It's more about being heard and pointing out to the front office what many people's perception is of the situation. I would think that taking a chance to address a group of passionate and fairly well educated fans is a good way to keep people interested and supportive in a rough patch for the team. Understanding how/why certain decisions are made is not a huge thing to ask. And I think it is good business.
  22. I disagree. I think many of the posters on this site knew that this season was lost in April and May. We have wanted call-ups to see what we have for the future. If the guys we have up are underperforming journeyman, why not see an underperforming prospect. I actually agree with Perdomo call up as long as he sees some consistent innings. Escobar could very well be a utility type, but don't we have four of those up now. Dozier should have been brought up in my opinion, for the very purpose of trying to right the ship that is his season. I have said this before, Carrolll needs to not see such consistent innings. I think that someone close to him needs to tell Gardy that Utility types don't play everyday. Especially Old, Expensive, Defined utility types. Slama, I agree with everyone else.
  23. Bark. You should check out Todd Snider's song D.B. Cooper. You might like it.
