  1. Perhaps it is time to stop looking so closely at minor league numbers.
  2. Yup, unheard of for marginal big league talent to struggle in their first full years in the bigs. Twins clearly don't know what they are doing when it comes to developing players. I will agree the Twins flubbed the defense in OF, mostly because they catered too much to Willingham at the start and Morneau was able to play more 1B than they anticipated. This combined with Parmelee hitting worse than they hoped and Doumit probably hitting better (and staying healthy).
  3. I'd take Saunders but I don't think he is much more than a lefthanded Correia.
  4. This is a good point. Your medical theory is basically irrelevant but otherwise Pelfrey is an interesting comparison. I suppose that comes down to the known risks of Tommy John recovery versus the unknown risks of whatever is in Marcum's medicals. Marcum along with McCarthy were always my top two choices this offseason but the Brewers thought was giving to me by a good friend who is a diehard fan of them. I hadn't thought of it and thought it was worth sharing. I don't see how a minor league deal with Harden is comparable to either of these deals. Correia is beyond a dead horse.
  5. I don't buy this premise. Depending on medicals Marcum could easily be more risky than the major league contracts Ryan signes. We don't know. I do find it telling that the Brewers, who know Marcum well, have money to spend, and have a big need for starting pitching, passed on him.
  6. Really? You think most teams could not use the upgrade a healthy Marcum could bring? I actually think it would be comparable to Haren. It would make sense for a fringe playoff team or better to go after him. If he stays healthy that would be a huge boost. The upside for the Twins is a few wins and the chance to flip for a prospect.
  7. I am stunned by this deal. We all know that the Twins are incompetent and don't know how to evaluate talent but why would 28 other teams pass on Marcum at this price? Marcum will be paid less than a whole collection of stiffs, not just Correia. There has to be something else going on here. I don't accept this has anything to do with money or the absurd notion it might block someone in High A. There has to be something about the medicals. If he stays healthy this year and produces Ryan is worthy of being criticized but so are many other GMs.
  8. Has anyone ever framed it this way? Or are you pummeling a strawman?
  9. I think you missed the point of the question. McCarthy and Marcum are the two guys I wanted. I was asking if one of those guys was signed instead of Correia would this be an acceptable offseason to someone who earlier today called for Ryan to be fired. This builds on my earlier point that most of the complaints still come back to the Correia signing. I am aware McCarthy and Marcum are better than Correia.
  10. How would you feel if it was the exact same offseason but it was McCarthy or Marcum instead of Correia? No additional moves.
  11. I apologize for engaging with comments and providing contrary ideas and thoughts. I could see why you wouldn't want that on a message board.
  12. Not employing this strategy and not spending the full draft allocation last year are by far my biggest complaints about the front office the past year.
  13. I was thinking years moreso than money. The only long term deal I had any interest in was Greinke and pretty sure the Twins weren't going to outbid the Dodgers. I'm pretty confident you worry more about the Pohlad's finances than anyone else on the board. I don't especially care if they make a profit.
  14. Why stop there? Twins might have just missed out on a future hall of famer.
  15. So it all comes back to wanting a better pitcher than Correia. I agree! But he is locked and loaded for next year and additional signings won't change that. I do eagerly anticipate many more threads that make this same complaint in different ways.
  16. They signed two of them and traded for another.
  17. I don't think signing Marcum would move the needle on attendance. But you are right the team has fundamental problems that have to be resolved and attendance will continue to drop.
  18. I think we can all agree on the need for better pitching. I don't necessarily agree it was possible to buy much this offseason. All the guys who signed for 1 or 2 years are different shades of meh. The others weren't coming barring a vast overpay.
  19. As a dispassionate observer of this nonsense my thought is maybe you should give the same message to the trolls.
  20. This seems a little extreme. Outside of Correia he has had an acceptable offseason. I have been thinking of this and the only reasonjng I can think of is they felt so burned by innings last year they took the guaranteed mediocre innings over upside with increased health risk. I don't agree with the strategy.
  21. Marcum on a one year deal would have been nice. I wonder why he couldn't get more. Did he want a make good contract or is there that much question about his health.
  22. You could definitely be right. All I'm saying is if he is healthy and wants to stay I think there is a really good chance he does. I am not among the people you are referring to. I firmly believe you can sign anyone if you overpay enough. When money is close factors like comfort, team success and ballpark factor in.
  23. The team also lost 99 games and I always heard the 2011 payroll was a stretch. Nathan wanted a contender, Kubel wanted out of Target Field and Cuddyer wanted out. Barring a huge overpay they were gone. When the Twins were good and players wanted to sign they stayed. The exception is the second contracts of Hunter and Santana. Those are what Target Field can fund.
  24. When talking about future payroll why is it a foregone conclusion Morneau won't be on it? If he is healthy next year there is a decentw chance be signs a midyear extension instead of getting traded. I would welcome that if the price is right.
  25. That wasnt from a lack of offer. And the team spent the unused money on replacements.
