  1. It's been said but I hope we have about 30 more of these threads.
  2. 1500 is the official home of "Twins talk" which means they get the set guests and shows. They have the hour show Sat morning and the guest is usually Ryan but also other FO people on occasion.
  3. I would bet he ends up in the pen in the Swarzak role. Will be interesting as both are out of options after this year.
  4. Players frustrated? They have more say on this than the team.
  5. Saturday 9am on 1500ESPN. Hour Inside Twins show. He is usually the first interview.
  6. This is true but the more important factor is that the Twins haven't really had a starting pitcher worth investing huge money in since Santana. There is much to criticize with the package they received (or the fact they probably should have just kept him and let him walk) but they were right to not give him huge money based on long term health concerns. Outside of him, who else should the Twins have paid?
  7. Pretty sure this conversation goes beyond merely scouting a stat line.
  8. The high k and low bb rates were much more significant for his success.
  9. FBs are converted to outs more often than GBs but obviously ocvasionally lead to HRs. A dominant pitcher is probably a high k low bb guy which is less contact and fewer extra baserunners. That combo for elite pitchers would seem to mitigate the damage of slightly higher hr rate but converting (lower amounts of) contact into more outs and making hrs have lower run expectation because of fewer baserunners. Would need the combo of high k and low bb rates to really make this work. Fb pitchers with higher bb rates could be a little dangerous.
  10. I appreciate Barnwell's point but I don't necessarily buy it. The Pats may have gotten more total value but it is spread over four roster spots instead of one. I think teams win with high quality guys instead of depth (of course ideally you want both). It is beneficial to consolidate as much value as possible in the one roster spot and try to fill in depth through other avenues. Vikes also had extra picks to work with and adequate depth already, it seems an acceptable risk to turn that into a better player. I don't pretend to know much about the individual players involved but if the Vikes had the wr as one of the last guys on the impact player tier I would think that is worthwhile to sacrifice depth for no matter what some draft value point system might say.
  11. I still don't know what proof you have that Ryan is ignorant of sabermetric stats. The best I can tell is that in this entire thread you had a pre-existing opinion and read everything in that article to fit your opinion. I personally think most of them are overrated and tell a story that should more or less be captured by a competent scout. They have value for casual fans who can't see many game but have less value when the majority of games (majors and minors) are scouted and reports are filed for an organization. Ryan said in the article that he trusts people, so he trusts his scouts judgements first and will also use stats and other information to verify when something doesn't seem right. What is wrong with this process?
  12. I don't know, he has a mediocre fastball, mediocre command, and not much for secondary pitches. He may hang on for a couple of years but he is about a perfect example of a replacement reliever that is available every offseason.
  13. The Twins will rue the day they let Burnett slip to those hated Orioles.
  14. This reminds me of the point in Moneyball where they talk about the great numbers Hatteberg had when he swung at the first pitch. It was thought he should swing at more first pitches, but that kind of defeated the point of why he had such good numbers in that situation, because he was so selective. It would be pretty amazing if Mauer had worse numbers with less than two strikes than with two strikes. If Mauer puts a pitch in play with less than two strikes it is likely a pitch that he really wanted and was able to put a good swing on it resulting in a better outcome. If Mauer started swinging at more pitches with less than two strikes his numbers in those situations would drop (probably by a substantial margin because he will be chasing more out of his comfort zone) and it would probably coincide with slight drops in 2 strike numbers as well (as some of his advantage gained by seeing more pitches would be mitigated).
  15. Good thought, just posted the same article. Well worth a read. My side point is that there really are some solid beat writers covering the Twins right now, from Berardino to the Strib to the guys at 1500 ESPN.
  16. Twincities.com : Minnesota Twins join 'Moneyball' era behind mystery man Another great article from Mike Berardino on the Twins and statistical analysis. They probably do a lot more with statistical analysis than we would ever know. On a side note there are some really great beat writers covering the Twins at the moment ranging from more old school coverage (at the Strib) to more statistical analysis (1500 ESPN) to great writing in between (Berardino/PPress).
  17. I'm sure a guy who was barely staying afloat in AA at the beginning of last year is always nervous about his spot on a 25 man roster.
  18. I highly doubt that the medical staff is so incompetent that they can't find a fracture on an MRI. If it was a stress reaction that is a touchy injury that can have varying levels of pain depending on the day - and I totally buy the theory that Mastro was trying to play through pain because he is a bubble player. I have been on teams in college that had players playing on different fractures and didn't really realize it until it kept getting worse. As an athlete you can push your body and these are among the best athletes in the world. This stuff just doesn't always get caught. What I really find hilarious is the idea that only the Twins suffer from this. I guarantee every fan base has similar stories, we are just so close to the team that our perception is exaggerated. The best point is that it is Mastro, there really is no reason to mess around with him. After 3-4 days put him on the DL.
  19. I agree that the only thing that matters is the decisions that the Twins ultimately made. But if we are going to evaluate the transactions from the position that the Twins could have signed other guys and that some of these other guys will end up doing better than the guys the Twins ultimately signed, then that is pretty pointless as well. That criticism could be levied against any team any offseason when evaluated with the benefit of hindsight. I certainly agree that the Twins can be criticized but I am much more impressed with the criticism when a reasonable alternative is presented.
  20. For the record I am curious who you specifically advocated for the Twins to sign. Then we can compare you against the Twins against the other options.
  21. But if you also want to look back at the end of the season and say that some free agents performed better than the guys the Twins signed and some performed worse, that doesn't say a whole lot either, anyone can do that. The point I tried to make throughout the offseason was that aside from a few top end guys (who probably weren't realistic for the Twins for a variety of reasons) there wasn't a whole lot of difference between the rest of the remaining free agents, maybe a win or two max. I personally advocated for McCarthy and Marcum, which would have been a mistake so far, but I thought the offseason moves by Ryan were more or less reasonable.
  22. I said this not to defend the Correia signing by any means (which I was not in favor of at the time and I still am not) but more as a pushback to the massive angst the whole offseason. Like most offseasons the free agent pitching options were poor and I'm pretty convinced that no matter who the Twins signed the majority of people on this board would have complained. And many of these soon to be better values that you allude to have already broken down or were unable to answer the bell at the start of the season. Free agency can be used to supplement when most of the core is in place, but you can't expect any team to turn over 4/5s of a rotation effectively in one offseason. Congratulations.
  23. I refuse to click on bleacher report as a rule. Who did they suggest to sign as a cf stopgap? I thought it could have made sense but I didn't recall any options that were better than Mastro.
  24. Fair enough but we'll see how long he stays healthy. I personally wanted the Twins to sign Marcum going into the offseason but I can appreciate why they passed.
  25. I think the better lesson is not that Correia was some great signing but that all the other options people were calling for so loudly were pretty hit and miss themselves. The amount of angst regarding Marcum for example was off the charts and the guy might not even pitch this year.
