  1. I bet he watches more than you think. He does review video of minor leaguers. But more to the point, he is obviously the public face of a decision made by the front office, likely with some consultation from Molitor.
  2. Why are they related? Tepesch is taking the start Berrios would get.
  3. I suspect none of us have seen enough of Berrios this year to adequately judge his fastball command. It wasn't good last year in the bigs. Wouldn't be the first time something that works in AAA doesn't work the majors. I assume they have something specific they want him to show in AAA before they bring him up. Citing strike numbers isn't going to tell us anything. Considering the alternative (Tepesch) and Berrios performance so far this year, might be worth it to see if he could tighten it up in the majors. That would be my preference. Or maybe they want to buy time, get him where he needs to be in AAA, and then have him come up for good when he is recalled.
  4. Sure. Those numbers prove nothing either way. I don't think the Twins are keeping Berrios down for giggles. They do actually want the best for him and the franchise. The fact that Molitor cited the very problem that caused problems for Berrios last year gives me a little pause. Makes me think therr is probably something to it. I would still call him up over Tepesch.
  5. Gibson has nothing to do with Berrios. They aren't judged by the same standard.
  6. A lot of those strikes are swinging strikes that fool AAA hitters that mlb hitters will laugh it. I buy the company line in the sense that it was the problem that dogged him in the bigs last year, but it is a little discouraging that it hasn't improved enough by now. I don't like this, Tepesch does nothing for me. But if the front office has a very specific plan with very specific benchmarks, I guess I can accept it.
  7. He's putting on an optimistic face, but he's done. Good for him to give it a try the last year of his deal.
  8. Nothing personal against those guys, but meh.
  9. Player development has changed a little bit in 35 years.
  10. I imagine Dems are kind of hoping they do. Don't see it getting through the Senate. Do see it featured prominently in TV ads next Fall.
  11. I don't think it is much different in total talent. AA generally has better prospects, AAA has more veteran guys/depth players. Probably good to pitch at both levels for some time, but a reliever jumping from AA isn't a huge stretch.
  12. Chargois needs to prove he can stay healthy.
  13. Definitely not. Even if you don't think a guy is ready, it is worth it to give a guy reps when you have a need and/or the season is lost. And I do think they should give him a shot here. I am not defending the decision to go with Tepesch. I don't like it.
  14. AAA vs AA doesn't make a significant difference to me. And he did only pitch 30ish innings last year. I imagine they want to see 15-20 games of dominance before they are too concerned about the level.
  15. Yes. It was a shorthand response. I just remember the comical comment from the Fangraphs writer that compared not calling up Berrios in 2015 to the Nats shutting down Strasburg.
  16. I would personally call up Berrios, have been saying as much for a week. I want no part of a Tepesch start. But calling up Melotakis right now would be nuts.
  17. He was perfectly solid in 2016. Come and back it up, and he hasn't yet.
  18. Who knows what they were thinking. Despite good/dominant numbers in AAA, and national suggestions that it was a mistake on par to not calling up Strasburg, they didn't call him up for the stretch run of 2015. They ultimately called him up in 2016, but it was much later than people were clamoring for here and elsewhere. Maybe they know something about Berrios for such tried and true methods of actually watching him game in, game out and not just reading a stat line.
  19. Shouldn't that be a cause of concern rather than something to be dismissed? A pitcher who goes 5 ip in AA without a k is going to get smoked in the bigs. Not saying he's dead, but I would think there should be some sustained dominance before they even think of moving him up.
  20. I don't understand the "I want MLB data" point for someone like Meoltakis. I'm pretty sure they have a good idea what they have. Throwing him into the bigs in early May doesn't do anything.
  21. Berrios I agree, but what about Melotakis right now makes you think he's ready to do well in the bigs?
  22. I didn't think the bullpen would necessarily be different on May 1. The significant change I thought possible/likely was Chargois, and he's hurt, so no way that's happening. I can't speak for everyone. I want upside guys too, but Chargois is hurt, Melotakis has a k/9 of 6 in AA, and Burdi pitched a total of 3 innings last year, so it's going to take some time with him. There's no one there right now.
  23. The bullpen actually seems to be performing acceptably. Probably why there is no rushing people up. There was a panic for a week, but it's calmed down again. And the main reason there hasn't been a change is the obvious candidate to come up (perhaps the only one) is hurt again. What would you have the Twins front office do?
  24. Jim Rice was a damn good hitter. It was unfortunate that a few writers got carried away in hyperbole.
  25. I agree on Berrios, but that strikes me as a small sample to make a sweeping generalization about. And I don't know if it is accurate at all to say Burdi or Melotakis *should* be in AAA right now. Chargois and O'Rourke got hurt. Not much the front office can do about that. And the old vets are one year stop gaps. Why is that a problem? They have to fill out a roster. And I personally would never put a specific timetable on things I can't control, but I do think the bullpen will look different throughout the year.
