  1. This is a untrue criticism to rebuilding. The Pirates and Royals sucked for years due to absolutely awful decisions in the draft and at pretty much every level of baseball. these two teams finally got it in the last 3-4 years when they spent megabucks in the draft and internationally. Now they both have great farm systems but that wasn't the case for the decades that they sucked. if you want a better comparison to the Twins then it would be the Cubs or the Mets. Expensive losers but luckily the Twins aren't saddled with any long term awful contracts. If you pay attention to baseball you'll notice that both of these clubs are slashing payroll and rebuilding their farm systems. Imo the do anything to get to 80 wins plan could set this franchise back years in the rebuilding process.
  2. I think the farm system will easily be top 10. 30 teams in the majors and the Twins will probably have two top 30 prospects and possibly 3 in the next 30 with a lot of interesting upside guys the Twins top 25 after that. there isn't much balance between pitching and hitting but talent is the only thing that matters in rankings like this.
  3. ugh... The draft costs one Carl pavano a year. Not investing in the draft is the worst idea ever.

    Strasburg

I think people look at this too simply from a number of innings POV. All of the talk of shutting him down and starting back up could be dangerous to a hard thrower like Strasburg. The problem with Strasburg's recovery is that he isn't like other pitchers. I'm not sure if he'll have a long career under the most ideal circumstances. I just hope that we get to see 4-5 years of Strasburg.
  5. I'm still happy that Young was sent packing regardless if the Twins got anything back.
  6. Actually the difference in baseball between 33 and 36 is usually retirement. Very few players play until 40. More importantly though is that it's unlikely that the Twins are competitive next year and possibly the year after. Trading him for a some players/prospects that can help for an extended run when the now pretty good farm system starts feeding the Twins makes sense.
  7. I don't think there will be a lot of interest in Willingham in the offseason. Teams have other options to pursue as well hoping that their Chris Heisey's and Ryan Ludwick's will fill a position. Hopefully he doesn't get injured before the trade deadline. I also completely disagree with how it would look to potential FA's. Most players take the most money and if a player turned the Twins down it would probably have more to do with them having back to back 90 loss seasons and they want to go to a playoff contender.
  8. Completely agree. Polanco was supposed to be a pretty slick defender as well while Niko was a good athlete that could stick in the MI. The funny thing is that Goodrum has actually been awful for July/August but everyone only remembers his incredible June. the same can be said of Harrison and he carries very little defensive value. I also think that both Harrison and Goodrum have some big issues with their plate discipline so it will be very difficult to get excited about them until they play full season ball. Other appy league players have completely fallen apart moving up to that level. Aside from Buxton I would rank the ETown hitters roughly as follows: Kepler - near the top of the tier from 8-25 Polanco - in the middle but moving up in that tier goodrum and Harrison - in the middle to the bottom of this tier Overall the Twins have a top 7 prospects with sano, buxton, Arcia, Hicks, Rosario, Gibson and Berrios. After that there are a lot of interesting upside guys (and a few high minors average-ish propsects) but nobody has really set themselves apart imo. Kepler is one of my favorites but overall these guys are all in the B- to C+ range. Extensive debate probably won't go anywhere and about the only thing you can do is put guys at the top, middle or bottom of this big tier.
  9. Fans aren't going to support an expensive loser either (see the Mets). the key is turning the club into a winner and it appears that some are only interested in finding ways to get back to 80 wins even if it leaves future payrolls stuck with bad contracts.
  10. tbh Target Field is one of the better corporate names. Beer names work (Miller, Busch and Coors). Insurance, bank and communications are typically awful. SafeCo, AT&T, Rogers Centre (skydome is better), Progressive, citi, PNC, USCell, etc... PetCo is also awful.
  11. I know that watching baseball in 105F heat in Vegas would be on my to-do list.
  12. what are you talking about? I'm asking you to IN HINDSIGHT go find mid tier FA's that you want on the team. CJ and Buehrle are having great years but I'm not interested at all in having either of these guys earning 15M at age 37. That is an anchor. signing Willingham was very lucky. I liked the deal then and wish it easy to find more like him. Aramis Ramirez looks like a good get at 3/36. the Twins could have gotten another OF'er in Carlos Beltran who has been worth every penny on a 2 yr contract.
  13. See the "strawman" post above. Sheesh. Start naming names (contracts) or other ways that the Twins could have spent the money then. spending medium sized money in FA usually doesn't work. go big and get studs or look for bargains (like willingham). I can think of one outstanding way for the Twins to spend money to improve the org. spend 11-12M on the draft and then spend nearly all of the int'l bonus pool. Wait a second... they did this...
  14. So some people complain that the team has a few payroll anchors on the team like Blackburn/Nishi yet they want the team to dive head first into FA to spend the available payroll? Something does not compute. Shelling out 4/58 for Buehrle, 5/75 for Wilson or 6/106 reyes got will certainly be viewed as anchors by the end of their contracts. And they are sizeable anchors instead of the little ones that you complain about now.
  15. You get at least the entry fee back I think but I'll be honest that I don't really care at this point. I'll probably stay involved enough to update my roster but I barely have any MLB'ers on my bench anyway. My team is just tanking right now though. It's like they drove off a cliff right before Haren and Garza got injured. Hopefully those 2 bounce back (Buehrle keeps rolling) and Holland/Skaggs/Harvey bring it next year.
  16. Of course he wouldn't be super 2 in this situation but he would hit FA a year earlier which imo is worse than super 2. super 2 only costs money while FA means that you completely lose the player one year earlier. You pretty much laid out the worst case scenario with your explanation.
  17. Please state a good reason for not allowing either to play in the AFL with the rest of the top minor league prospects. It would be very rare for Arcia to play there (he'll play in the VWL likely) though.
  18. Imo it sounds like you could do a lot better than Beloit but not much worse. Compared to Rochester where you could do much, much worse. Player development in Las Vegas and several other western PCL cities is awful. It would be cool if you could get a team in the eastern PCL somewhere in the great plains (a franchise move would be required) but the international league is the best for player development.
  19. You gotta represent BYTO.
  20. there's pretty much 0% chance that either get called up considering the financial disincentive due to calling them up.
  21. Jurrjens arm is completely trashed. Pick him up as a Jared Burton/Joel Zumaya type flier but you can't count on him for anything.
  22. He took a one year contract on a favorable team so he could go after his multi year contract.
  23. Herrmann is a 24 yr old repeating AA with a .737 career OPS. If he's not catching then he's barely even a prospect.
  24. I'm not seeing it for Herrmann tbh. He is on a tear in August though. I don't really understand how it's possible that Felix Jorge isn't a top 50 prospect. Imo he's at the tail end of the interesting but young group in the 10-20 range. He's thrown about the same number of pro innings as Berrios and the Berrios bandwagon is going nuts.
  25. Arcia has been killing it this year as a 21 yr old in A/AA ball. He's going to make top 50 lists and he's still a hair ahead of Hicks in my book. Rosario is a lock for top 100 lists but will probably fall out of the top 50.
