  1. Re: Gibson: Remember, per Anthony, the plan is, if all is well, for Gibson to pitch at the AFL this fall. That will tell a lot of things. If he pitches well there, rehabs well in the off-season and is ready and has a good Spring Training, I see no reason why he will not be with the Twins in 2013. There are about 4-5 ifs in this sentence though....
  2. Steven Evans was released. 13th round pick last season played with Etown and Beloit this season. LHP with 11.4 K/9 in the 2 levels this season (12 K/9 in Beloit). Sounds strange but I have seen the Twins doing stranger things in the minors this season.
  3. DJ Baxendale and Taylor Rogers (starting today) to Beloit form E-town and Chris Mazza to E-town from the GCL
  4. Well... you got to define long term. On the other hand, since you have Morneau on this list, looks like you are defining it as 2013, which is not long term. Add some ages next to those guys as well, and you will see that mid-term (2014-2015 only players like Mauer -because of the contract- Revere, Plouffe, maybe Dozier, maybe Burnett, maybe Perkins would fit the bill.) Long Term (2017-18) not many of those would be around. The key is to look for 2014-15 when Sano, Rosario, Arcia, maybe Buxton, Hicks would form a decent core supplemented with players like Mauer, Plouffe (probably a DH by then) etc. This is why you got to trade players that would not contribute then (Willingham, Doumit, Morneau, Span etc) as soon as you get someone who could be part of that 2014-5 core, and yes, preferable a SP, because the Twins' SP then projects something like (no order) Hendriks, Gibson, Hermsen, Wimmers, Salcedo etc. I think that the pen then, because of this years and last years drafts, will be great. SO... these are my thoughts about your question. You got to build a team with a good young core surrounded by some veterans.
  5. A team not in the list: Pirates in a package with Span for two of the young Pirates' pitching prospects plus a hitting prospect.
  6. The "Santana for nothing" trade was going to happen no matter who was the GM. I would not doubt that the interim "retired" because of the potential fall out of this trade and on the Hunter letting go. I blame Gardenhire for burning the bridges with Garza as much as Smith for trading him. But still he got more for him (including a guy who carried his team practically singlehandedly to the 2010 postseason) than the interim got for another of Gardy's boys, Kyle Lohse. Nishioka and Wilson for Capps were bad. And I would suspect that if Gardy did not fall in love with Drewy, and insisted in having Wilson with the big team, he might still be with the Twins. On the other hand, the deadline trades he made rebuilding the pen in 2009 is another reason the Twins won the division. And one of those arms came because of one of the nobodies he received for Santana. No pen arms in 2009 no division win; and not Delmon in 2010 no division win. So he needs some credit. Ryan made some idiotic moves (heck, I'd rather gamble on Nishioka than Ponson, Batista, Boone and the other washouts, including Marquis, that Ryan have paraded throughout the years) Gotta be fair.
  7. Gardy specifically said a lot of things in the paper (like saying "Cappy will be my closer" two days before he gave the job to Nathan last season) that were untrue. So his words needs to be taken with a grain of salt the size of the Dead Sea. He is not going to come in the middle of the season and openly say that he will retire. That is like retiring
  8. I'd rather see what he does with Mauer, Gibson, Revere, Willingham, Plouffe and co next year
  9. Look at the source. Ryan is a close personal friend.

Here is the Twins Trade Talk the past 24 hours or so: Jon Heyman reports that the Baltimore Orioles are looking into Fransisco Liriano. Meanwhile Jason Stark reports that the Orioles are "all but out of the rent a picher business, unless the price is too cheap to turn down", which does not make it a match for Liriano. Welcome to trade deadline conflicting talk. Apparently a week after the interim GM Terry Ryan said that the Twins are listening on anybody, an "annoyed Twins' person", as Jon Heyman tweets contradicts his interim GM as far as trading Josh Willingham goes. David O'Brien at the Altanta Journal and Costitution writes that the Atlanta Braves have not pursued Fransisco Liriano Joel Sherman suggests that the Twins hope that Carl Pavano and Matt Capps are healthy enough to move them this August in a waiver deal. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8429/7653114270_3e9c917c6f_z.jpg

  12. The problem with this is that unless there are some mechanical reasons, severe velocity drops point to injuries, usually elbow and shoulder.
  13. I want one of what JB (the ESPN guy not the Twins Geek) is drinking... Trades like that do not happen.
  14. Based on what I hear, the Twins will not trade Willingham for Bundy straight up, they would want more. And the O's really have no use for Morneau. I think Liriano plus Span to the O's for something is a more likely package (allegedly the Os are on Liriano and per Olney they are looking for a good OBP guy)
  15. I hope they trade for him and I hope he implodes and lose every one of his starts.
  16. The point is, that, unlike Liriano, the Twins do not have to trade Willingham or Span or even Morneau, so they are waiting for a team to really give lots back. Makes sense. I would think that the Cubs would want prospects and they would not be scouting the Sux MLB team. Unless they maybe scouting someone like Casilla or Fien or Swarzak or something along those lines from the Twins
  17. It all depends on what they will get in return. Lets not forget that Willingham is not getting any younger and his fielding projects at DH... That said, I find it interesting that this un-named "Twins' person" directly contradicted what the interim GM said openly a few days ago (i.e. that they are listening on anybody.) Either someone is lying (maybe trying to increase Willingham's value) or they are not all on the same page. On the other hand, Stark reported yesterday that the Twins have a really really high price on Willingham (as told by a rival GM) which means that at least they are talking, which means that Heyman's tweet is garbage (or that mystery Twins' person is out of the loop)
  18. To make a statement that losing is not tolerated. THAT simple. If they do not, they practically say that they are ok with the product on the field. Wrong message.
  19. The Twins have made few more moves than the ones listed, namely signing 4 - 30+ year old free agent players this off-season, which the Astros did not do... As far as this goes: IMHO "contending in their division" should not cut it any more. The Indians are "contending" and they will finish below .500. One should ask which of the 2 teams will "win a world series next", which is the mark of excellence, not "contending in the division", which is the mark of mediocrity. But, unfortunately, a lot of Twins' fans have been happy with the mediocrity of the Gardy era, which appeared great after the contraction situation and the perpetual basement dwelling of the late 90s. But it is about time the bar is raised again. There is no contraction, there is no perpetual suckage, they got a brand new ballpark... Time to raise the bar for the Twins, because if nobody does, and people are satisfied with mediocrity, mediocrity will continue. Ask yourselves this: How would you feel if they win 80 games in 2013 and finish 2nd in the division? Is this a successful season or just an improved but mediocre season? I think it is about time we are start to expect excellence from this team...
  20. This is good news. I just hope that they really keep a close eye on Wimmers and look at that elbow after each performance because it was one of those rest and rehab situations that they severely messed up in the past.
  21. Interesting to see that there still is a 10% of fans who defend Gardy....

Here is the Twins Trade Talk the past 24 hours or so: Add another team to the list of teams interested in Franscisco Liriano: the Arizona Diamondbacks. LEN3 writes that the scouted Liriano along with the New York Yankees, Chicago Cubs, Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds and Toronto Blue Jays last Tuesday. Cubs? Maybe they were scouting someone else. Some interesting bits from Jason Stark's latest. He says that the Twins are looking for "a young ready to go" starter for everyone they trade. Also he indicates that Fransisco Liriano is "guaranteed" to be traded, probably after his next start. He also ranks what the Twins want in return for their position players as: a. Josh Willingham ("so expensive, it made me laugh"), b. Denard Span ("more pricey") c. Justin Morneau ("pricey"). Also indicates that the Twins do not want to pay for any of the $19 Million Morneau is owed, in a trade. In the same piece, he indicates that the Los Angeles Dodgers have talked to the Twins about Morneau. Meanwhile, Bob Nightengale says that the Dodgers will add a bat and a starter. Ken Rosenthal mentions that the Cincinnati Reds have been looking at Denard Span, but the price seems to be high and they might have to look at rentals instead. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8166/7646566684_b881c7c6aa_o.jpg

  24. I think that the Twins can do better. Eovaldi was BA's #92 prospect overall and McGough has closer stuff but is a reliever, that's why was not ranked... I was trying to find comparables for the Ramirez plus Choate from the Twins and the closest I could go to was something like Morneau plus Burton. And that is not even close (Morneau plus Burton have more value because of team control and age on Burton and overall owed to Morneau plus better performance recently, plus Morneau can play on the field.) The Dodgers took a huge slice of that payroll as well. If anything, this may give an indication towards Morneau's value.
  25. The H-Ram trade does nothing to the Span value, if anything it may affect Willingham a bit. The Hamels extension and the Wandy Rodriguez trade really has Liriano cornering the market of LHSPs
