  5. Hard to tell what the best offer is. Actually in most cases you have to wait a few years. We all thought that the Bullock for Diamond trade was a bust last season, but this season is different. What I am talking about is more a matter of principle: You don't help division opponents and you don't trade within your division no matter what. Now the Twins have traded with everyone but the Royals in the division within the last calendar year.
  6. but, according to Ryan, an MLB-ready starter is less than a top prospect at A level. If you want to sell something for a dollar, you don't start negotiations at 75 cents, right?
  7. Some of us think that if he helps the White Sox make the post season (ie. add more $ to their coffers because of ticket sales, so they have more $ to spend to field a better team in the future) is a bad move... Nobody can ruin the Twins season. Ryan and Gardy and Co took care of that
  8. Alright. Tell me who is lying: a. Terry Ryan when he says that he is looking for a top prospect no matter his readiness and getting a young MLB-starter over a top prospect would be a mistake or b. Ken Rosenthal when he says that the Twins are asking for this for Morneau because there is a conflict here...
  9. On the other hand, this is exactly what the interim did... I guess he has to admit that he made a mistake now... Actions speak louder than words. He can say a whole bunch of stuff. What he does is what matters, not what he says he's going to do. He said that he was going to fix the Twins medical stuff and waiting for Godot before they put people on the DL. Plouffe/Capps/Pavano happened. For some reason I do not believe a word that guy is saying.

Originally published at The Tenth Inning Stretch ---- This continues the dialy trade talk updates for the Twins and of action around the league that influences the Twins trade moves, up until the deadline. You can find all the older updates here, in reverse chronological order. Here is the Twins Trade Talk the past 24 hours or so: Fransisco Liriano to the Chicago White Sox is old news. Here are profiles of the players the Twins received in return. Apparently the Twins did not even talk about an extension at this point. and the Boston Red Sox were finalists up to the trade time. I wonder what their offer was to make the Twins' interim GM, Terry Ryan, trade within the division... The last trade between the Twins and the White Sox was on September 3, 1986 when the Minnesota Twins traded Pete Filson to the Chicago White Sox for Kurt Walker. The last trade between the two teams that involved a decent player was on February 19, 1985 when the Twins traded Roch Scheer and Randy Johnson (Not THAT Randy Jonhson) to the White Sox for current TV analyst Roy Smalley. And both of those times, the White Sox were in a different division (AL East vs AL West.) The first ever trade between the two franchises was in June 13, 1903 when Ducky Holmes was traded by the Senators to the White Sox for a player to be named later and became Davey Dunkle a week afterwards. Meanwhile, Twins' players were disappointed by the Liriano trade and White Sox GM Kenny Williams apparently thinks that they see some flaws they can fix to improve Liriano. Here are some additional reactions of Twins' players and coaches. Liriano himself was surprised by the trade. On the Ron Gardenhire show on ESPN 1500 yesterday morning, Gardenhire said that there have been discussion about Justin Morneau and he really does not want Josh Willingham to leave the Twins. Bob Nightengale indicates that the Twins are talking to other teams about Denard Span, but unlike what Terry Ryan said (ie. that he is after single A prospects,) he is looking for an MLB-ready pitcher in return. This is a strange one (but very true) : The Seattle Mariners are interested in Josh Willingham. A package of Héctor Noesí and/or Erasmo Ramírez and maybe even Taijuan Walker could be in the works Justin Morneau, Matt Capps, Carl Pavano and Nick Blackburn all make Jon Heyman's list of players who can get traded via waiver trades after tomorrow's deadline. Nick Blackburn? That is hopeful. http://media.thestate.com/smedia/2012/07/23/23/17/533-VyFXC.Em.55.jpeg

  12. Morneau is a prime candidate for an August trade
  13. hmmmm I don't know where you got the velocity numbers and I don't know where Sickels (if that is who you are referring) got that about his pitches. mini profiles and scouting reports for both are here. Escobar has 4 pitches: A fastball that averages about 90 and maybe he can reach 92-93, a cutter (that some people describe as a 'slider' but it isn't) that sits in mid-high 80s, a slow (70s) curve and a change. The change is his best pitch and his only truly plus pitch. His FB is above average. His cutter has potential but needs work and his curve is an average pitch that he uses as a change of pace type pitch. And he does not use it that often. Because he had been primarily a FB/change pitcher most people thought that he will end up in the pen before he developed the cutter (he still might, btw) His potential as a starter really depends on the cutter.
  14. A couple of funky medical facts: - Appendicitis pain and infection will get away with IV antibiotics (but it will happen again, unless you take care of it) - Infected and inflamed tooth pulp and nerves would quit hurting with a round of antibiotics (but they will hurt again some time soon, unless you have a root canal). That simple. Ligaments do not regenerate. If they are torn or partially torn, you got to do something about it. Of course, you can "rest" them and throw cortisone shots to make the inflammation and pain reduced and you can really build some scar tissue around them too... but they'll snap again and you got to do what you got to do. About that simple.
  15. Thinking the way this Twins' management does (and I hope they are all gone before next season), you got: Blackburn and Diamond as locks. Then Duensing as an almost lock. Then they will add a "proven veteran" a la Marquis or Pavano or Livan on an one year deal and the last one will probably be Hendriks or Deduno. That is how they will start the season. By mid-season 3-4 more starters from the minors will be called up to replace a few of those. That's these Twins' way.
  16. I know about the Royals. But those were right away, no R&R, right?
  17. Agreed. We do have 2 camps: The people who think that the Twins need major changes in order to win again and the people who are drinking the Kool-Aid and for them Terry, Gardy and StPaul are the holy Trinity or something. http://thefranchisehound.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/KoolAid.jpg
  18. Marquis, Livan, Pavano are all free agents... Seriously I don't think that they will go after any of the "big names" because they refuse to give anything more than a 2-3 year contract to pitchers. That will make lots of them out of their reach. They might go after someone like Anibal Sanchez, that's about it.
  19. I think it might have just happened to Naftali Feliz as well. Hard to tell what happens in other organizations unless you follow all their MiLB systems. BA might have an answer
  20. Alright...might be semantics and we shall see about Sanchez. But my main point was that he is not a better pitcher than Liriano (or THAT much better, if he is) and the Twins have gotten nothing close to what the Marlins did. That's where this whole discussion was based. I think that Ryan should have done better.
  21. Alright... Look at these links. Last column (SwStr%) : Peavy U Jimenez Sabathia (check his line in 2008 while with the cheeseheads) AJ Burnett Josh Beckett Cliff Lee (even though he has been declining due to age, his Phillies years are better than these 7s in the CLE years) please add anyone else you want who went from the NL to the AL (those are some names I can think from the top of my head) So that 2-3% drop I am talking about is not magic... it is very normal and usual and anticipated in these type of changes... check it out...
  22. Not K/9... SwStr% his last 3 seasons in NL was in the 9-10s. Now is in the 6-7s Sanchez' career K/9 is in the 7s... I bet it will be in the 5s in the AL.
  23. He has been pitching in the NL. When Pavano was pitching in the NL, he, too, was missing Ps' and light hitting IFs' bats at the same rate. When he came to the AL, those numbers dropped to where they are now... Unless you don't think that Pavano has been a pitch to contact guy. NL-numbers do not translate in the AL like that...
  24. I bet Liriano does better than Sanchez the rest of the year. Sanchez' first ever AL start bombed. He is a pitch to contact guy and these type of guys might work ok in the NL. Not the AL.
  25. Did you see what the Marlins got from Detroit for Sanchez and a futility infielder?
