  1. The JBJ one was hilarious, I must say.
  2. Yeah. I will say I've enjoyed my draft so far.
  3. I have to admit that I got a bit of thrill seeing all the fauxrage from people that American Sniper/Bradley Cooper didn't win.
  4. My baby brother showed me a link a couple years ago of cross-fandom with the Packers. The Twins were among the top 5 baseball teams that Packer fans rooted for. The other four were Brewers, Red Sox, Yankees, and Braves (which makes sense with the Milwaukee connection).
  5. I would wager strongly that there's an international draft in the next couple of years, so it likely won't hurt them as bad as one would think.
  6. No, not it's not. If your life is truly altered by something the Red Sox/Yankees/Tigers/Packers/Badgers do, you need to seek professional help. True, honest hatred has no place in sports whatsoever. I'll cheer any day of the week against the Badgers playing well, but that doesn't mean I ever cheer for any player on their team to be injured or actually hate the team. I'm encouraged at the same time that you're saddened to hear that there's a poster who can separate his dislike of seeing another team beat his own team to appreciation for the process that team employs to achieve their victories.
  7. Not really. As mentioned, Harper/Strasburg probably could have topped the $30M mark without problem. He'll need a year in the minors because he's had so much time off, and he's 19. If the Twins (or any team) rushed the #1 pick immediately to the majors, regardless of the cost, fans would be irate and calling for heads for "ruining" the player. All along it's been said that Moncada will likely need to have a year or two in the minors before he's ready. Heck, he's added something like 2-3 inches of height since his last professional game played. That alone will take some getting used to.
  8. They can only spread it out over 3 years maximum, per MLB rules.
  9. So, Thad Young was a mistake, no doubt, but bringing back Garnett for a retirement tour? C'mon now.
  10. Yeah, he was accused, and he reportedly was given the money under his pillow and did not realize it was gambling money until after he got threats from the gamblers for his play. I'm not saying he was perfectly innocent as there's really not evidence, but he was quite confused on the stand and admitted in the grand jury to keeping the money left in his hotel room, not directly taking money from the gamblers. He requested more than his annual salary at the time if he was going to do anything, and then he backed out even at that amount. As far as his lackadaisical defense in losses, I think it's hard to be sure as there are eyewitnesses to both sides, some saying he played well in every game, others saying he loafed, but not just in losses.
  11. Not before Joe Jackson is forgiven and in the Hall. There's a lot more evidence of Rose actively betting than Jackson, who has some conflicting reports, but generally it is accepted that he returned every dollar he was given by the gamblers and was the only one named that actually played his heart out.
  12. So guys like Willie Mays, Mickey Mantle, and Hank Aaron should never have received an award? Interesting...
  13. For any team, or for the TWolves, because unless they secure a trade or something, I don't think Russell should be in play for them.
  14. Those weren't my valuations. They're from listening to the ESPN NBA podcast with one of their analysts who mentioned that valuing of picks based on a WAR-esque statistic.
  15. Dollar value metrics are in a very infantile stage in basketball metrics, but the general decrease is that someone drafted at #30 is half as valuable over his career as someone drafted top 3. The number decreases significantly outside of the top 10 and then slowly decreases all the way to 30, so basically, failing on two mid-first round picks is akin to failing on a top 3 pick.
  16. I did this in this thread. No other team has had less success picking the best player in the draft at their slot than the Timberwolves. In fact, no one else comes close. It's ridiculous.
  17. The problem is that they keep trading picks, first for Thad Young, and now Adrian Payne. Ugh.
  18. ...but his title is not General Manager. If you want to call him the baseball operations guru of Atlanta, then that's fine, but General Manger is not his title. The rewrite would be something like "A comparison to the Cleveland Indians of the 1990s under general manager John Hart, now Schuerholz’s President of Baseball Operations in Atlanta, is instructive." That would be accurate.
  19. That's the biggest thing. If they got to July and Cliff Lee or Cole Hamels would put them over the top, a guy like Austin Hedges is still there as a keypoint of a deal. They also didn't move a lot of their big league young talent, though I will say swapping Grandal for Norris may bite them a bit. They're also looking at a possible influx of picks from two possible qualifying offer guys after the season in Upton and possibly Kennedy, so losing their first-round pick this year may not hurt as bad because they'll end up with 3 in the top 40 or so next season.
  20. I love what San Diego has done this offseason. Talk about going all in - and they're still in a position to make a move or two. The biggest question mark I have is having essentially 3 right fielders occupy the outfield. Also, interesting that now Shields and the big name prospect he was traded for, Wil Myers, are on the same squad, and it's neither squad involved with that trade just two offseasons ago.
  21. He's really not, though. He has John Coppolella doing a lot of the work and then Hart signs off on it. Regardless, he has other duties either above and beyond or completely outside of General Manager, and that is the direction many teams have gone. It's disingenuous, if not outright misleading, to call him the GM
  22. Legendary North Carolina coach Dean Smith dead at 83
  23. Exactly this. I would like nothing more than to be completely wrong on Rubio.
  24. <Adds gunn to the list...>
  25. I do find the timing of the book odd as multiple places (Fangraphs and Baseball Prospectus, to name two off the top of my head) have come out and discussed the reduced role of the GM in the modern game, and how that change has happened slowly, but is complete at this point. Heck, the write up has a blatant misrepresentation, and I'm hoping it's in error, not in order to attempt to prop up the position of general manager. John Hart is not the Atlanta GM. There is no Atlanta GM. Hart is the President of Baseball Operations, which is not what the article above represents.
