  1. That's not happening. For a lower-tier prospect, sure, but those guys aren't moving for more contract.
  2. Funny stuff there... The Vikings most tenured defender played his high school ball for a school in my alma mater's conference.
  3. So, apparently that picture is recycled from the Charlie Hebdo attack. The point still stands. Terrorists want fear, confusion, and chaos. We have to stand up to that.
  4. Mariners re-signed Franklin Gutierrez and Marco Estrada re-signed with the Blue Jays.
  5. I'm at my night job, so I cannot get on Twitter to get the picture, but someone in another forum just posted a picture from Twitter of the streets of Paris with a huge crowd holding up lit signs saying "Not Afraid" on them. As a frequent concert-goer and someone who does security for a music festival each summer, I'm probably most upset at that venue being the focus of the attack, but this was about attempting to strike fear in times of enjoyment and leisure - dining out, sporting events, a concert. These are times when we as people allow ourselves to be our most vulnerable. Our entertainment is when we allow our hearts to be taken into the hands of someone else. There is little more intimate than live music of what you enjoy on the musical spectrum. To violate someone when they are at their most vulnerable is akin to the pedophile to me, taking advantage of the vulnerable for your own gains. I don't have the words adequate for condolence. I found out on Facebook that a friend of mine was leading a group of pastors and church leaders on a tour of Paris. That personalized this way more than I was prepared for, and I don't know how I would have responded to losing a friend to such senseless violence.
  6. Forgot to add the real first trade of the offseason: Mariners acquire RHSP Nate Karns, LHRP CJ Riefenhauser, OF Boog Powell Rays acquire RHRP Danny Farquhar, SS Brad Miller, 1B Logan Morrison
  7. Makes me sad that the Braves felt compelled to include Melvin/BJ Upton to move Kimbrel. Imagine the haul they could have received by trading him with three years of control instead of the two he has right now and without the rough patch Kimbrel experienced last year, basically his first hiccup in three years.

  9. Signing a pitcher this offseason would actually be incredibly wise business. The pitching market this year is deeper with talent than it has been in ages and likely will be again due to players typically signing extensions to avoid free agency. The hitting market is basically what it typically is year to year, but this is a borderline historic free agent pitching market.
  10. I think if someone came to them for Markakis, Maybin, Bourn, and Swisher for much more than a song, those guys would be in a different uniform tomorrow. I would imagine one of Miller/Teheran will be kept. If someone was willing to gamble on Grilli being the 2015 version before injury, he'd be gone. All that said, and the other rumor from Atlanta today is that David Price and Zack Greinke are on the radar. Just, wow.
  11. Somebody has to be able to hit, though.
  12. That part wouldn't be surprising, frankly. Miller can lead the rotation, and the Braves have seven guys ready for the rotation behind Teheran and Miller with Wisler, Banuelos, Minor (if he can come back), Weber, Jenkins, Foltynewicz, and Perez.
  13. Albies isn't ready yet. Maybe not in 2017 either. He's 19 and hasn't even played at high-A yet. I think he would have been fast tracked there before his injury last year to end his year. They have passable guys like Daniel Castro who wouldn't make a fool of themselves there over a full season, but the Braves rebuild that was sold to fans was that they would have a big run on young pitching taking their early lumps in the majors and then a rush of hitters ready to explode as those pitchers were ready to dominate the major league level. Having an other worldly defensive middle infield (Jace Peterson at second base is a candidate to move to shortstop now, and his glove work is exceptional as well for a guy in his first year at the keystone position) would help those young pitchers in their transition to the bigs for sure, especially with the "ground and pound" (ground balls and pound the zone) philosophy of the Braves pitching system.
  14. Okay, but a Lester is a guy that there's 2-3 of in the league at any given time, and usually that's not even the best guy in the league (I'd put him at least 3rd among lefties on his best day and probably 5th behind Kershaw, Sale, Price, and Bumgarner). Simmons is not just a generational talent. He's doing things on defense that people have never seen done. He's Ozzie Smith with a better arm right now. Yes, an injury could quickly change that and he'd suddenly be less valuable, but if we're going down that road, which is more likely, a catastrophic injury to a pitcher or a shortstop? Simmons is a guy that provided so much value with the glove that he could actually provide significant negative value with the bat and still be worthy of a starting role. He and Aybar were both -11.7 in the ORA, but Simmons provided 23.2 DRA while Aybar was -0.4 DRA. Aybar's an average shortstop, but the difference between Simmons and an average shortstop is akin to the difference between having Bryce Harper and Nick Markakis as your RF.
  15. ...and an avatar.
  16. Seriously, look up the play. AJ had very sure hands for the Braves last year, especially considering the young, erratic staff he caught last year. I was adamantly against signing AJ last offseason, but he played very well behind the plate and handled the young staff well, much to my surprise.
  17. Um, Pierzynski may not grade out well, but he played very well behind the plate. Heck, his framing was so good, he created possibly the gif of the year framing the heck out of a one-hop pitch.
  18. Back on point, to catch up: The Padres traded Joaquin Benoit to the Mariners likely to close for the M's in exchange for two minor leaguers, neither of whom were in the midseason top 10 for the Mariners. The Braves re-signed AJ Pierzynski. Nothing else is confirmed quite yet.
  19. We had Heyward at $47M. He's 26. He plays 2016 for $47M and likely still gets a 5+ year deal after 2016 for 150M+. Wouldn't that be worth it? The biggest risk is that on opening day Heyward tears his ACL and is out for the season, but even then, he's got such a track record, that you'd think that he'd have his $47M in the bank and still get solid money only being 27. It was interesting to consider. Greinke was our highest number mostly because we both figured he had the most to lose in an injury/bad performance year after the 2015 he had.
  20. Nah, it's all good. It did bring up something I was discussing with a friend during half time of the football game today... How much would it take on a one-year deal to get someone like Jason Heyward, David Price, et al to forego the long-term deal? $30M? $40M? more? We were about 10 players deep into the free agent pool with our guesses when half time got over, but it was an interesting thing to think about.
  21. Just razzing you. Normally the threads in here get off track with Twins talk, so it's at least a different distraction!
  22. Mentioned in the offseason thread. This is why we can't have nice things.
  23. Intriguing. Not terribly unsurprising, though. Outside of his playoff heroics, what were the reasons someone would consider paying Rasmus $15M even over 2 seasons?
  24. So, my alma mater has run up a couple of pretty memorable seasons the last couple of years, and they capped it off by winning the first South Dakota state football title in the school's history today. Last year, they ended up leading the nation (yes, really, the nation) in average rushing yards per game at just short of 500 yards per game. In the championship game today, the team went for 404 yards of rushing, including a state record (for any class) of 303 by the team's senior tailback. Congrats Warbirds!!
  25. You can believe that. You're wrong, but you can believe that. I'll politely direct you to my top 100 Brave prospects post in this forum. I've spent hundreds of hours reviewing Braves prospects. I'd personally put the guys with upside of a #1 starter at 6 in the system before the deal, and honestly, while Newcomb would rate higher on my own list due to his proximity to the majors, he's still not the most talented lefty in the system. Kolby Allard with a full season could easily leapfrog Newcomb.
