  1. I think that's a fine, payable to Joe Maddon.
  2. I would love to get James Shields as long as the Rays aren't asking for too much. I think Denard Span plus a good prospect is a lot, but it would be worth it, especially since we would have him for at least two years. Saying that Shields is "good but not great" is an understatement - he isn't great, but he's a very good pitcher. I do think TR thinks the Twins can contend in 2013, so this is the kind of deal I would expect him to pursue.
  3. I think I was 8 when I saw that head-first slide into home. I remember copying it while playing kickball at school. Of course, now I know better than to slide head-first into home. But as a kid, it was awesome!
  4. I don't understand the benefit of having Gibson pitching through September. It's unlikely that the Twins will be competitive in 2013, so if they want to cap Gibson's innings at 130 then it doesn't really matter when he reaches that limit. If the Twins somehow find themselves in a situation similar to what the Nationals went through with Strasburg this summer, then maybe they have Gibson skip a start here and there so he can pitch through September. If that's the case, it's a good problem to have (and hopefully one that they would handle better than the Nats with Strasburg).
  5. Somewhere Brian Dozier sees these pictures and a single tear rolls down his cheek.
  6. Would a good comparison be the system used with Japanese players? For example, with Yu Darvish, the Rangers paid nearly $52 million for the rights to negotiate with him, then signed him to a 6 year, $60 million contract. Their commitment is almost $112 million for an elite prospect like Darvish. There is some scouting involved, but the Rangers just outbid everybody for him.
  7. I didn't see the game last night, so all I know about this situation is what I've read on the internets today. What I don't like is that Mauer got plunked and Oswalt didn't get a warning, and Hamilton did not get hit but Diamond was ejected. I think the ump should have warned both teams after Diamond threw behind Hamilton because that's probably the end of it. Nobody gets thrown out that way. It sounds like Diamond's pitch was a purpose pitch. If he wanted to dot Hamilton, he would have.
  8. It's official. TJ surgery for Giolito: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/nationals-journal/post/nationals-first-pick-lucas-giolito-to-undergo-tommy-john-surgery/2012/08/23/71683bd0-ed7b-11e1-9ddc-340d5efb1e9c_blog.html

    Strasburg

Did they have a comfy lead in June and July? I thought things were a little tighter then. I don't really remember, though. I understand why they would want to limit his innings and it makes sense, but I think they could have executed it better. They are much better than they thought they would be and now they find themselves in this situation. The Nats have been pretty healthy and things have gone well for them, so I think they should go for it. That doesn't mean they should pull a Dusty Baker and run Strasburg into the ground, but if they have a shot at winning the World Series and they shut down their best pitcher, then that's stupid. You never know what's going to happen in the future. Players could get injured or have bad seasons, and then you look back at 2012 and wonder what could have been if Strasburg had pitched in a few more games. You have to go for it if you have a chance.
  10. I've seen this many times. Why don't people feel that Gibson will be ready by the beginning of the season in 2013? Personally I think he has an excellent shot to make the starting rotation out of ST mainly because: 1. Prior to requiring TJ Surgery, he most likely would've been part of the rotation coming out of ST in 2012. 2. By April, he will be 18 months post surgery. Baker is the one that won't be involved at all until June at the earliest. I don't think health will be the reason Gibson doesn't start the season in the majors. He has 21 starts in AAA and I doubt he'll add to that total in 2012. After not pitching for so long, I think the Twins would want to bring him back slowly and make sure he faces increasingly difficult levels of competition in actual games before bringing him up.
  11. I mostly agree with this, but I would mash the first two points into one: I would hope for a starter who has #2/borderline-#1 upside. Also, when do you want to take a snapshot of the rotation and have it look like this? It's not going to be the beginning of the year because Baker and Gibson won't be ready at that time - Baker not fully recovered and Gibson still working his way up from the minors. I would expect to see Gibson in the Twins rotation sometime in June. I don't expect Baker to contribute much until 2014, and even then you're probably looking at a #3 starter. And yes - everything with Baker assumes that he re-signs with the Twins, hopefully on some kind of 2 year incentive-laden deal.
  12. I don't think anyone is saying this is impossible. Medical staffs do make mistakes on every team. The problem with the Twins is that there seems to be A LOT of mistakes.... and some of them (like Wimmers, Neshek, and Gibson's TJ surgeries) have been very predictable. These pitchers having TJ surgery wasn't the result of a mistake by the Twins' medical staff, was it? Surgery was the outcome as a last resort. I don't see a problem with being cautious and hoping that rest & rehab works. What bothers me about the medical staff - and really the Twins organization in general - is when a day-to-day injury turns into a 15-day DL stay, after the player has already been out for a week.
  13. If you listen to Keith Law, he basically thinks that most hard throwing pitchers are going to need to go through TJ at some point anyway, so they may as well get it out of the way earlier in their career. Even if Giolito does have to have surgery, this was still a great pick for the Nats and Giolito still has more upside than any other pitcher in the draft.
  14. While I agree that pitching is most important, there's still something to be said for run prevention. I like the Marco Scutaro idea, but he's making 6 million this year, so he might be a little too expensive.
  15. I think the Twins would gladly take Vargas for Morneau because he seems like the kind of pitcher they target. I'm not sure why Seattle would do this, though. They're nowhere near contending and probably don't want to get older.
  16. Nice article by Tom Powers. I suppose this makes Chris Colabello the new Brian Dozier, right? How so? Tom Powers likes him, so naturally Colabello will fall off a figurative cliff. I probably also should have included Trevor Plouffe: http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_20986701/tom-powers-suddenly-trevor-plouffe-has-place-twins And Tyler Robertson: http://www.twincities.com/twins/ci_20946758/tom-powers-minnesota-twins-rookie-tyler-robertson-blows Indisputable proof of the Curse of Tom Powers!
  17. Nice article by Tom Powers. I suppose this makes Chris Colabello the new Brian Dozier, right?
  18. This year, yes. But in 2010, Target Field ranked 19th in runs scored and dead last in HR. In 2011, it was 21st in runs scored and 20th in HR. Here's the link to ESPN's park factors: http://espn.go.com/mlb/stats/parkfactor
  19. My favorite name would have to be Fenway Park. To a lesser degree, I like the stadiums named after their team - Dodger Stadium, Angel Stadium, Nationals Park, etc. I think the best corporately (is that a word?) named stadium is Miller Park since it's home to the Brewers, although I like Coors Field as well. The worst name has to be O.co Coliseum. Sorry Oakland.
  20. Command and control are more important than "makeup". Liriano has very good stuff, he just can't always throw it where he's supposed to throw it.
  21. I wouldn't mind seeing the Angels in the playoffs because it means watching Mike Trout play more and Jered Weaver dominate with a 90MPH fastball. I can get behind any underdog/surprising story, though: Orioles, Rays, A's, Pirates, Reds, Nats.
  22. I agree that signing Greinke and one more good starting pitcher (hopefully not Liriano - we've been down that road) would get the Twins back in contention. I think re-signing Doumit indicates that TR thinks the Twins should be contending next year. I'm curious to see what he does in the offseason to address the starting pitcher needs. It's nice to dream about having Greinke at the top of the rotation, but I think the odds of it actually happening are pretty slim.
  23. The Braves seem like the most obvious answer.......which is why I say it'll be the Dodgers. Liriano for some projected mid-rotation starter and we'll all be happy with that.
  24. I guess TR should have consulted There Mom before signing Marquis.
  25. Was Marquis really a disaster? Yes, he pitched poorly, but it was also a one year contract. One year contracts aren't disasters. Alfonso Soriano is more of a disaster.
