  1. Haha, I was going to post that answer here but you beat me to it! Great question. Here are two others I found interesting: If 1-3 are Appel, Gray, Manaea, what do the Twins do? Can't take Bryant since he'd be sent to high A where Sano is playing third. I'm not sure they'd want to take another OF but I don't know if the 4th best pitcher is a better option. Jim Callis: Don’t think Manaea goes No. 3 right now. But if that did happen, I might take Kohl Stewart at No. 4. What do you see the Twins doing at 4? College Pitcher, or simply the best player available? Jim Callis: I think they’ll go pitcher, which might be the best player available as well. Also, Christopher Crawford has a draft chat today at 3 at his website mlbdraftinsider.com. I will try and get those questions/answers up on the appropriate threads once the chat is done.
  2. Jim Callis answered this question last week about Buxton vs the 2013 draft. Who would you rather have: Buxton or the 2013 draft field? Jim Callis: Buxton Keith law has also stated he would rather have Buxton over anyone in the 2013 draft, including Appel and Gray who are considered the top two talents this year. Meadows and Frazier are great talents but Buxton is on another level compared to these guys.
  3. Thanks for the pictures SD. Definitely helps for those of us who haven't been to cedar rapids
  4. From the game cast about Buxtons HR:he connected for a 2-run home run that left the stadium and bounced into a tree on 8th Avenue beyond left field.
  5. They are in a weak conference, they haven't played anyone outside of their conference, and currently have no real draft prospects. They are a fine college team, NCAA has them ranked 62 in their division 1 schools, but not good enough for a prospect like Anderson to go 3/4 K/BB ratio.
  6. Haha, I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. Makes finding things so much easier AND gives a general place to put nonspecific draft updates.
  7. For those who followed the Twins draft last year noticed the Twins trying something different; draft a butt load of hard throwing relief pitchers. Some with the hope to convert them to starters and some with the hope they will just be fast moving arms. The following is a list of arms who fit this bill. Like always, this isn't a complete list but a good place to start. Corey Knebel, RHP, 6'3" 210lbs, Texas "The tall right-hander gets it done with a good two-pitch power combination, a fastball that hits the mid-90s and a downer curve with bite that's a true out pitch." Mayo Best pitch- 65 fastball Colby Suggs, RHP, 6" 225 lbs, Arkansas "A bulldog right-hander, Suggs is all power, with a sinking fastball that sits mid-90s and can touch more than that. He complements it with a power breaking ball that can be an out pitch at times. With slightly better command and perhaps a little refinement to his breaking stuff, he has the kind of arm that could close games at the Major League level." Mayo Best pitch- 65-70 fastball A.J. Venagas, RHP, 6'3" 215 lbs, Stanford "The right-hander can sit in the mid-90s easily and was throwing harder than that on the Cape this past summer. He has a slider and started throwing a cutter on the Cape" Mayo Best pitch- 70+ fastball Jimmie Sherfy, RHP, 6" 175 lbs, Oregon This guy can flash a plus fastball and a plus slider, but he needs to flash more consistency and needs to understand that in pro ball, he’ll need to bring his better stuff into games sooner. Best pitch- 65 fastball Michael Lorenzen, RHP/Cf, 6'3" 195 lbs, Cal State Fullerton He has a plus-fastball and potentially plus-slider, a pure relief pitcher, without starter upside, isn't an asset many teams will spend a early pick on. As a hitter, scouts question whether Lorenzen will ever hit enough to showcase his defensive ability on an everyday basis. Best pitch- 65 fastball Dan Slania, RHP, 6'5" 275 lbs, Notre Dame "Slania is just as much about his feel for pitching and advanced approach as he is about raw power. The Notre Dame right-hander opened a lot of eyes in the Cape Cod League last summer with his combination of raw fastball life and command". Frankie Piliere Best pitch- 65 fastball Finding good scouting reports for guys who profile as relief pitchers isnt easy but Louisville's Dace Kime is another name to look out for.
  8. During the 6 years Johnson has been the Twins scouting director he has only drafted 2 HS pitchers in the first 5 rounds (33 total picks). While his last two years he has taken Boyd and JO it still might be a mute point.
  9. From BA's What to expect in the first round: AL. Twins Top 10-Rd. Picks: 4, 43, 78, 110, 140, 170, 200, 230, 260, 290 Bonus Pool: $8,264,400 Scouting Director: Deron Johnson (sixth year) Johnson’s First-Round History: Aaron Hicks (14th overall, 2008), Kyle Gibson(22nd overall, 2009), Alex Wimmers (21st overall, 2010), Levi Michael (30th overall, 2011) & Byron Buxton (second overall, 2012) Johnson’s Top 5-Round Breakdown: 33 picks (17 college pitchers, eight college position players, two high school pitchers & six high school position players) The industry belief is that the Twins want pitching. But we wrote that last year too, and the team picked high school outfielder Byron Buxton. If the consensus top two talents—righthanders Mark Appel from Stanford or Jonathan Gray from Oklahoma—don’t fall, the Twins could go with Indiana State’s Manaea or Nevada’s Shipley if they want a pitcher. San Diego’s Bryant could also be in the mix. But would you blame them if they decided to pair Buxton with another tooled-up Georgia high school outfielder like Clint Frazier or Austin Meadows? After all, the Twins’ Georgia scout, Jack Powell, has an impressive track record for finding big league talent. He is the signing scout for Tom Browning, Jose Bautista, Matt Moore, Matt Capps and Jeff Keppinger. Complete article and break downs of the other 14 AL teams below: What To Expect In The First Round: American League - BaseballAmerica.com
  10. From BAs prospect notebook: J.O. Berrios, rhp, Twins. Berrios worked out of the bullpen for the Puerto Rican team in the World Baseball Classic, so the Twins decided not to burden him with a starter’s workload immediately and held him back in extended spring training. He made his 2013 debut with low Class A Cedar Rapids on April 22, allowing two runs in five innings, and he made his second start last night against Lansing. The Twins will look for more consistency out of Berrios’ slider, but his fastball is already good enough for him to dominate inexperienced hitters. He struck out eight over 6 2/3 innings on Monday, allowing only one run on four hits with no walks.
  11. Bryant is a little taller than Sano at 6'5 vs 6'3 but Sano definitely has at least 15 pounds on Bryant. Both have a chance to stay at third but it sounds like most experts have them at RF or 1B. While it would be nice to finally have 3B shored up, these dudes have bats to play any where. Its impossible not to get a little excited thinking about Bryant/Sano batting 3/4.
  12. Through 5 innings Buxton is 2-3 with his 4th HR of the year. This kid is sort of good.
  13. Haha, crazy isn't it? Definitely puts draft prospects from colder states at a disadvantage. Harder to evaluate them when they have hardly played.
  14. Kohl does have some mechanical issues, 99.9% of high school players do, but from what I have read they are very fixable. This isn't a Tyler Matzek where you need to change his mechanics due to injury concerns. It's more of cleaning up than changing. Obviously high school players bring more risk than college guys but as Twins fans we have seen with Wimmers..... Even the safest picks can fail.
  15. Out of the pitchers I think he is the only guy after Appel and Gray who profiles as an ace. Other people could emerge in the future but currently these are the only three I see.
  16. If Manaea is injured and Appel/Gray/Bryant go 1-2-3 like some believe we might be stuck. I have Stewart at 3 on my board so I prefer him to either Frazier or Meadows but neither would be a bad pick at 4. Like Buxton last year....talent is talent!
  17. Frazier and Meadows regular seasons are over. Frazier ended last weekend while Meadows ended this past weekend and went 2-for-4 with two doubles, and finished his season with a .554/.655/.944 line.
  18. Via Christopher Crawford on boldt: "You feel for the kid, but now taking him early is a huge risk," one crosschecker said. "We have so little on him as it is because of [Minnesota's] late start to the season, and now there's a chance he might not play again this season. You're basically basing your scouting reports on what you saw in 2012 and over the summer, and so much can change between then and now. I don't care how many 60s [on the 20-80 scouting scale] the kid might have, that's a risk that I don't know if I would take in the first round."
  19. From a scout on Thurman via Christopher Crawford: "People use the phrase 'pitchability' a lot, and Thurman has it," an NL scout said. "He's not going to be an ace, but he knows how to keep hitters off balance, and he's going to keep you in ballgames. Normally, that's how I'd describe an early Day Two guy. But this year? That should probably go in the first round."
  20. A quote from a scout on Stanek via Christopher Crawford: "I've seen some bad [stanek] starts this year, but this one takes the cake," an AL Central scout said. "None of his pitches even flashed plus in the first three innings, and the command was once again well-below average. I thought he'd challenge Appel at the beginning of the year, but there's no way I'd take him in the first 15 picks right now. If you do, you're betting on the Stanek of [last] summer, and that's a bad bet."
  21. I had no exact place to put this but I thought it was interesting. Jim Callis answered this during his weekly Ask BA: With the NFL draft taking place last week, there was a lot of talk about “true first-rounders.” How many players in the MLB draft this year would you say are “true first-rounders”—guys who would be first-round picks in any year? "I’ll draw my line at 24 no-doubt first-rounders. But if I wanted to be slightly more liberal, I easily could find enough to cover all 33 actual first-round selections." Who did he name? Check out the article below. Even though it is a weak group there is still a ton of talent that has first round talent in any draft. Rest of the article is here: Ask BA: The 2013 Draft's "True First-Rounders" - BaseballAmerica.com
  22. Jim callis answered a pretty interesting question in his weekly Ask BA segment. How would you rank the top 10 high school pitchers from the 2010-13 drafts? I’m basing the rankings below on how the pitchers were regarded at the time of their draft. For instance, Jose Fernandez would rank No. 1 based on current status, but he ranked 20th overall on our 2011 Top 200 Draft Prospects list. 1. Dylan Bundy (Orioles, No. 4 overall pick, 2011) So polished that scouts considered him equivalent to a college pitcher. 2. Jameson Taillon (Pirates, No. 2, 2010) Pittsburgh took the next Josh Beckett between Bryce Harper and Manny Machado. 3. Archie Bradley (Diamondbacks, No. 7, 2011) Had even more electric stuff than his Oklahoma high school rival, Bundy. 4. Max Fried (Padres, No. 7, 2012) First lefty on this list is a slightly less powerful version of Clayton Kershaw. 5. Lucas Giolito (Nationals, No. 16, 2012) Might have been first prep righty to go No. 1 overall if he hadn’t hurt his elbow. 6. Kohl Stewart (St. Pius X HS, Houston, 2013) Has best high school arm this year, extra leverage as Texas A&M quarterback recruit. 7. Lance McCullers Jr. (Astros, No. 41, 2012) Only signability dropped him to the sandwich round, where he landed $2.5 million. 8. Taylor Guerrieri (Rays, No. 24, 2011) His stuff compared to Bradley’s in 2011, but maturity issues caused a slight slide. 9. Karsten Whitson (Padres, No. 9, 2010) Failed to sign after contentious negotiations, then struggled and got hurt at Florida. 10. Trey Ball (New Castle, Ind., HS, 2013) There’s no longer a split camp on two-way’s star future—he’s definitely a pitcher. At first I thought Kohl at 6 is pretty low but the guys ahead of him are top end talent. All ace potential. 25. After several very unspectacular weeks Appel came out and pitched well. 9/2 K/BB, 8.1 innings, 8 hits, 1 ER, Appel had fifteen, yes fifteen, ground ball outs against one fly out.
