  1. Haha, thanks! Aiken, Kolek, Rodon, Jackson, Hoffman is a good top 5. I would take any of those at #5.
  2. Keith Law chat draft questions: Do you think Touki Toussaint goes top 15? You had him as a borderline second rounder in your first top 50 - has your opinion changed at all in the last 20 odd days? Klaw (12:11 PM) Yes, and yes. My opinion changed after the NHSI at Cary, where he was 93-94, throwing strikes, and had a better changeup. I think that dramatically boosted his stock within the industry - he could go as high as 9 (Toronto), I think. What are your thoughts on LHP Kyle Freeland? Where can you see him going in the draft? Klaw (12:14 PM) I think he's a future reliever, but I know many scouts view him as a starter and are comparing him to Chris Sale. He'll go late first round, maybe in the teens. If they draft were tomorrow how do you see the first 3 or 4 picks playing out? Klaw (12:15 PM) Aiken, Kolek, Hoffman, Rodon. I've heard the White Sox like Trea Turner more than most teams, but I wouldn't expect them to take him with every college arm still on the bboard In terms of draft stock, how much of a setback is Derek Fisher's wrist injury? Klaw (12:17 PM) I think it knocks him out of the first round - but makes him a target for an over-slot deal for a team that can save money on its first pick and then picks again in the 30s. Sounds like Rodon is not becoming a Prior or Strasburg like some people expected. Is something not panning out? Would you take him at 1:1? Klaw (12:37 PM) He was never a Prior or Strasburg; he was just well ahead of anyone else in this draft class. But he's backed up a little, while Aiken and Kolek both took big steps forward. I would draft players the way I ranked them here: http://klaw.me/1r5SiSk If you were Rick Hahn, would you take Hoffman over Rodon (assuming Aiken and Kolek were already selected)? Klaw (12:42 PM) It depends on the cost, but if it's equal I'd take Rodon. Hoffman's a tremendous athlete with arm strength, but the secondary stuff isn't at all consistent and he needs a lot of work. Of course, Don Cooper will give him a cutter and he'll end up in the top 5 in Cy Young voting for 2016. Following up: If Hoffman and Rodon were still on the board but the White Sox went with Turner, bad decision? Better long term upside? Klaw (1:01 PM) I'm really not a Turner believer - he's a 60 runner, not an 80 runner, and I don't think he stays at shortstop. Turner really a 60 runner? I heard a 6.32 60 time and a way under 4 time to first. Both marks are comfortably 80's. Klaw (1:04 PM) 4.20 every time I saw him last month. Better than last summer, still not 80. I am hoping that Rodon slips to the Twins in this draft, would you place him at a higher prospect ranking than either Alex Meyer or Kohl Stewart? Klaw (1:07 PM) Last time Twins took a, uh, high-bonus guy like that in the first round was ... go ahead, I'll wait. Why is Rodon high bonus? If he goes back to NCSU and has another bad year, he has no leverage. Could he really turn down $5M or whatever his slot would be? Klaw (1:10 PM) People said the same things about Mark Appel in 2012, how he had no leverage, he couldn't go back to school, and how did that work out?
  3. Law, Baseball America, and Crawford now have Aiken #1.
  4. BA released their new draft rankings but I don't pay for their site. They do mention that Aiken is their new #1 draft prospect and the top of the draft is dominated by pitchers. If anyone pays for the site and wants to share it would be appreciated. Also, they will have a free (I believe) chat today as well as Law. I will try to push as many Twins related questions forward.
  5. If I had to guess they would be: Rodon, Aiken, Beede, Kolek, Hoffman, Holmes, Jackson, Gordon. Pretty talented bunch.
  6. Haha, just going by the reports. Law and J.J. Cooper reported last week that his speed might not be what we thought it was. On a different Turner note, he will be suspended his next game because of being ejected from the Clemson game. Law also reported tonight that Aiken is dealing. Has hit 96 at least 6 times tonight.
  7. From BA's J.J. Cooper's chat: How wide open is the field for #1 overall in the draft? J.J. Cooper: Way wider open than it was when the season began. At this point there are a number of viable options at No. 1. In some way, you could say that's good news for the Astros, as it gives them some flexibility financially at the No. 1 pick, as opposed to what it looked like last fall when there was one clear No. 1 pick (Rodon) who was likely to be looking for at least the full No. 1 slot value and maybe more.
  8. Reed has also been a stud this year on the mound. He has worked himself into late first round discussion.
  9. I also have Gordon and Zimmer ahead of Turner/Gatewood. Just don't like what the scouting reports are saying. Several sources have downgraded Turner's speed from 80 to 60.
  10. How did that turn out reaching for Ponder? Or Jake Locker for the Titian's? Or Gabbert for Jacksonville? In the 2011 NFL draft 12 players out of the first 16 taken have been to a pro bowl with some suggesting Nick Farley was snubbed last year. Dalton and Kaepernick were taken in the 2nd round. Don't reach. The Twins are spending millions of dollars to scout players. They will have a board by draft day and will draft BPA regardless of franchise need. With the way the draft is shaping up it wouldn't be surprising if their first two picks are pitchers.
  11. I understand what you were trying to get at but I feel your grasping at straws here. The difference between the two is so significant I just can't make the comparison. Unless you are in a 30 team, dynasty, single position, and minor league baseball draft I just don't see the point of comparing. This BPA vs need convo comes up every year over and over and over again. While you and I might have different boards/drafting styles, which is fine, in the end the only thing that matters is the Twins board. The Twins will take BPA on their board regardless of position. That is just how they draft.
  12. I'm not saying teams should aim high. I'm saying asking for a 40+ HR player, 80 grade power, is asking a lot. One or two of those might be in any draft and they normally have several glaring holes in their game. Jackson has star potential. Here is how Law describes his bat : " All-Star offensive upside in the long run no matter where he plays."
  13. Jim Callis said they will be updating the board in a week or two. They are still working on top 20s I think. Also, great link.
  14. Aiken was borderline first rounder? You might be confused with a different pitcher. Starting the year MLB.com had him #9, BA had him #9, Jim Callis had him #9, and Law had Aiken #7. He was considered the top HS left hander from the get go. As for comparing the real draft vs fantasy draft that is kind of silly.
  15. Finding HS stats is always hard to do but here is Law's take on Gordon after seeing him last month: "This year he has come into his own as a legitimate top-half-of-the-first-round prospect, and in my opinion the best middle infielder in the draft class, worthy of a top-10 pick." "There's no doubt at all that he can stay at short. He's quite a bit stronger this year, adding 10-plus pounds of muscle, so he's better able to turn on good fastballs and has been showing more pop." "His bat speed is fine, and I think he's a high-average, 10-12 homer guy at his peak, with well-above-average defense at shortstop -- the kind of prospect who would go high in any draft, but especially so in a draft class light on middle infielders like this year's." Law gives him 50 future hit, 55 future power, and 60 future speed. Had him ranked #9 on his last board.
  16. Your expectations seem a bit high.
  17. If you think Gordon/Turner are equally as talented as Jackson then sure, draft a needed position. If you feel Jackson is a better prospect than Gordon/Turner, most experts would agree, then you have to take the most talented player. You can't draft based on big league needs. We didn't need a CF prospect when we drafted Buxton but that's turned out pretty well for us.
  18. I would move him to RF right after drafting him. His bat is way too valuable to have it sit in the minors for 5+ years. I think if his hit tool is as good as reported he could be on a Buxton time table.
  19. Articles from Jim Callis on A.J. Reed, Grant Holmes, and Brandon Finnegan: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20140408&content_id=71334280&notebook_id=71334470&vkey=notebook_mlb&c_id=mlb
  20. From Conor Dorney on Jackson: "Jackson continues to terrorize prep pitching in Southern California and is now up to a healthy .424/.587/.939 line for the season." Definitely has the potential to be a stud.
  21. As of today this is pretty much how I feel. Hoffman and Jackson seem to be the most likely bets. Getting the best bat out of a draft isn't a bad thing.
  22. Here is a link to the article: http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/mlb-draft/post?id=1499 While Turner and Rodon have struggled a lot of the HS arms have shined. There have also been some good reports about Alex Jackson. Rodon, Hoffman, Beede, Aiken, Holmes, Kolek, and Jackson seem to be in the top tier together.

  25. I was really impressed with Hughes. His stuff looked great but had problems hitting his marks, which isn't uncommon to start the year. If he can get his command under control he could be a steal at $8M a year.
