  1. Callis and Mayo debate who the Cubs should take now that Hoffman is injured. Callis says Jackson: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/jim-callis-cubs-would-be-wise-to-draft-jackson-at-no-4?ymd=20140513&content_id=75298266&vkey=news_mlb Mayo says Gordon: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article/mlb/jonathan-mayo-nick-gordon-fits-for-cubs-at-no-4-in-draft?ymd=20140513&content_id=75299890&vkey=news_mlb
  2. Let's not forget the Rockies signed Gray last year under slot and several experts had him as the drafts best player. Going under slot doesn't have to mean you get a lesser player.
  3. BA article on Kolek: http://www.baseballamerica.com/college/kolek-sets-new-bar-for-texas-heat/
  4. Kolek falling to us is a dream come true but I just can't see it happening. As max said it wouldn't take just one surprise pick but two.
  5. With the Hoffman and Fedde arm injuries it really makes the cubs/our pick interesting. Can we still get Gordon under slot? Heck, can we still get Gordon? Is he good enough to draft at 5 instead of an advanced college arm? Personallys I feel the answer to all the questions is yes.
  6. Second potential top 10 pick in Fedde goes down with TJ..... These college arms are dropping like flies.
  7. Few Keith Law chat questions: Better draft class than last year? Klaw (1:09 PM) Yes, more pitching depth for me well into the 2nd and 3rd rounds. Keith, have you heard what names the Twins are on? I'd really like to see Gordon, we don't have anyone like him in our system. Klaw (1:11 PM) Gordon and Nola in particular with them. Hoffman has to drop because of TJ but how far? Klaw (1:08 PM) Million dollar question - or maybe $2 million. I think teams with a second pick right after the first round would be in position to get creative and pay him over slot down there. Astros would be one such team, as would the Royals with three picks between 17 and 40 and a history of doing just that (Manaea last year). Sources have also pointed out Washington and Boston as teams that might be interested in overpaying him if he fell to them. He also mentions in a separate question that Theo scouted Gordon in person last week.
  8. Crawford also released an article (insider) today on the highest ceiling players in the draft. He named the HS/College hitters/pit hers with the highest ceiling. Here is who he had: HS bat- Getty's HS arm- Toussaint College bat- Zimmer College arm- Rodon Link to article: http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/mlb-draft/post?id=1655
  9. Keith Law Released his new top 100 today and is also having a chat. If anyone wants to know where someone is ranked ask. Here is his top 10 without write ups: 1. Aiken 2. Rodon 3. Kolek 4. Gordon 5. Zimmer 6. Jackson 7. Holmes 8. Fedde 9. Newcomb 10. Nola Here is a link (insider required) to the full list: http://insider.espn.go.com/mlb/draft/mock/?season=2014&version=2&source=Keith-Law-Big-Board
  10. With Rodon, Aiken, and Kolek most likely off the board give me Gordon, Jackson, or Holmes. I just don't love any of the other college arms that much.
  11. I would share if I had a subscription. As for wanting a new mock John Manuel at BaseballAmerica is releasing one tomorrow. Hopefully it isn't also behind a pay wall. With the Hoffman update I'm sure Perfect Games will release an updated one soon.
  12. You are right. I was looking at the page before it got updated. I personally don't see the Cubs drafting Gordon but what do I know? I see Jackson as a better fit for them. Either way I would be happy with Gordon or Jackson. Getting one under slot would just be icing on the cake.
  13. Really? Mine isn't showing that. That is strange....
  14. Luis Ortiz was a top arm but was injured to start the year but I can't see him dropping to #46. Maybe Justus Sheffield who pitched poorly and has a commitment to Vanderbilt. Dylan Cease is also a Vandy commit with a big arm but is currently resting because of an elbow that has been bothering him (good chance he has TJ). Those are the first three off the top of my head. With the draft being 29 days away I'm sure we will be a few more.
  15. Crawford's new mock draft (must have been released before Hoffman news). Has Twins taking Gordon: http://mlbdraftinsider.com
  16. If McDaniel is right and the Twins take Gordon under slot at #5 I wonder who they will target at #46. Hoffman won't make it to #46 with how many other teams have multiple picks before us. Outside of the other draft news about Bukauskas wanting to go to college I can't name many big name hard signings this year. Obviously players will fall but there is no Ryan Boldt/Kyle Serrano this year. Maybe once the draft gets closer we will hear a few more names.
  17. Kiley Mcdaniel's new updated top 116: http://sbb.scout.com/2/1400460.html This part was the most interesting: "There are already rumors that my #5 player, Nick Gordon, will cut a below slot deal with the Twins at pick #5 with his father, former big league reliever Tom Gordon, acting as Nick's advisor. Every player/advisor in this range knows they could slip to the bottom if they lose a few coin flips in split war rooms, so they are incentivized to market themselves as signable because if they slip 5-10 picks, even an over-slot deal at a lower pick would likely be for less money."
  18. From Darren Wolfson: No shock: told East Carolina RHP Jeff Hoffman is no longer in the mix for #MNTwins at No.5. Would be if lasted until No.46. No surprise.
  19. Also, BA will be releasing their first mock draft of the year tomorrow. Not sure if it will behind their pay wall.
  20. Tough break for Hoffman. Seems like Jackson/Gordon are the most likely choices right now. On a different note HS pitcher Bukauskas has sent a letter out to teams saying he will be going to college.
  21. I'm not a big bloodline guy but with Dee starting to finally put it together it makes Nick more interesting IMO. Especially when you take how much better of a prospect Nick is compared to his brother when he came out. Nick is bigger, stronger, has a better arm, and the footwork to handle SS. Also, having daddy Gordon as a father doesn't hurt.
  22. Crawford released an ESPN insider article today with a few draft updates. He talks about Aiken vs Rodon for top arm, talks about 3 college 1b (Reed, Sam Travis, and Casey Gillespie) making a late charge, and how Newcomb and Freeland continue to impress. Here is a scouts take on Freeland: "I hear [Freeland] and {LSU's] Aaron Nola compared all the time," an AL scout said. "And I get the comparison, they're both pitchers who have plus command and have concerns about their low arm-slots. For me though, I'd rather have Freeland. "If things are close I generally would prefer the left-hander anyway, and I think he's got a better breaking ball and is going to miss more bats at the professional level. That isn't necessarily what the industry thinks, and he's definitely going to have to use his change more, but if he does, he's got a chance to be a solid number three, maybe even a number two." Link to full article here: http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/mlb-draft/post?id=1648
  23. Crawford released his new board. Heavily linked to the Twins Gordon moves up to #6. Check out his top 50 draft prospects here: http://mlbdraftinsider.com/2014/05/the-board-2014-volume-iv/
  24. Draft notes on Fedde, Tous, and Ramos from Callis: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20140502&content_id=74018400&notebook_id=74018908&vkey=news_&sid
  25. I rather Stewart's minor league numbers suffer by not throwing his best pitch to develop as a player.
