  1. Then don't. That's the secret of getting through life sane.
  2. That statement cuts both ways, of course. I've seen that done on all sides of this issue.
  3. If I had a time machine, I for one would go back in time and right wrongs and make the world a better place. However, if in the process of that, I just happened to pass a vendor of lottery tickets...
  4. "They're coming home after a tough road trip where they faced three winning American League teams in the Tigers, Indians, and Red Sox and managed to win five of ten games against three good teams." I recall some people saying that this past road trip would show what the Twins were really made of. It's still early, but maybe the early success was not an anomaly - this team might be a .500 club for real.
  5. Yes, we get it, this is the 3rd thread I've seen you start that all focuses on the "Twins have to spend big money to be successful" theme. I would respectfully suggest that not everyone buys into your primary thesis, and that the failure to do so is not a sign that we have been brainwashed or developed a mental illness; it is simply an honest difference of opinion. You may disagree, and that's OK. I'll sleep just fine anyway.
  6. Just got back from dinner and a play, and checked the scoreboard. Looks like its time for some shameless self-promotion. As I recall I posted the following in the series preview page on Monday: "I've always believed that if you don't seek to reach beyond what you think is possible, then you will never do anything of value. I'll pick the Twins to win 3 out of 4 this series." I love it when it works right!
  7. Fair enough. And I share your enthusiasm for Deduno's potential (if you can call it that at age 29). If he ever develops a more consistency (like he started to show in the WBC) he could end up being what he hoped to get from Liriano but never did.
  8. I think it all depends on what people are willing to sign for. As I understand it, part of the goal in this new slot system was to reduce the impact of "signability" on the selection process. It doesn't seem to have had that effect. If anything it has intensified it, as the penalties for going over-slot in the aggregate give GMs greater incentive to ascertain signability, either overslot or underslot, before making a selection.
  9. So, 5+ weeks into the season, one can make the case that the AL Central is the best division in the American League. Taking out divisional games and only considering results against teams in the other two divisions (and ignoring interleague games because of the unbalanced scheduling) you have as follows, through Thursday 5/8: AL Central 41-31 .569 AL East 42-35 .545 AL West 25-42 .373 I expected the AL West to be the doormats, and they are, but I didn't expect the Central to be topping the East. Just an observation.
  10. That depends how you define "rebuilding." If rebuilding means you lose 90 games but start putting pieces in place for the future, than no - I said at the start of the season I expected them to win 75-80 games, and I still think that. But I don't see them as competing for the division title or the playoffs. With Detroit where they are now, .500 ball will not get you into a pennant race in September. So in that sense, yes, we are rebuilding.
  11. This was my hope as well - just give me something decent to watch.
  12. I don't think Hernandez was ever the first choice for the 5-spot; he was always, at least in my mind, a placeholder, brought up because Hendriks couldn't cut it again and only until DeVries/Deduno/Gibson were ready to go. If he had pitched lights-out, then we could have this discussion, but I think you send him down, not because of the last two starts, but just because we do have better options and always did.
  13. Didn't they learn Monday? You do NOT let this team get back into the game when you have them on the ropes.
  14. Just got in from work, put the game on, and I have to watch that? What the heck just happened?
  15. That in itself is a subjective statement with which not everyone will agree.
  16. I have to question the idea that has been espoused by a couple of people here that the dugout is a "public" venue. Yes, the ubiquitous (today's 25-cent word:)) presence of television has given the public a glimpse into that (although without audio so we don't actually know what was said or what Gardy was mad about), but it is still, in my mind, a private venue, just as the locker room is private. With the advent of video-capable smartphones, even locker room "discussions" can now be aired publicly, but that doesn't make it a public forum. There is still a big difference between what happens in a dugout and a locker room and what is said in a post-game press conference that is an intended media event. And, while Gardenhire's personality and interpersonal skills are a valid topic of conversation, let's not start shifting the blame for Hicks's play to Gardenhire. Hicks is the one who is making simple mistakes that big-league players just should not be making. When you make the first mistake, the manager should gently correct and coach you; when you make the third mistake, the manager can still correct and coach; when you make the 10th, 15th, etc... at some point you have to kick some butt, because obviously the soft-sell approach is not sinking in. Same thing with Plouffe at third.
  17. You mean, the same trainers that diagnosed "bilateral leg weakness" a couple of years ago?
  18. Is that an example of a former MVP getting the benefit of the doubt?
  19. Hey, you gotta love the human element of the game.
  20. I hope Plouffe was watching - that's how you tag a player. Way to go, Joe!
  21. I never understood the name for that - how can it be a salad when there's (hopefully) nothing green in there.
  22. Hey! Did the teams change jerseys there? That looked like a Twins play.
  23. OK, inning over, minimal damage, blood pressure returning to normal.
