  1. Yes. I think we are all in agreement that the fans are being done an injustice, not Mauer- which was what the original poster stated had been done to him.
  2. Part of risk management is preemptive initiative and that is as much on Ryan's predecessor, but that was my point, not specifically a bash on TR. They could have traded some of those arms when they carried higher value, they could have properly assessed true value before they committed the big dollars to unworthy and erratic arms. Admittedly, you can't forsee specific mechanical breakdowns and injuries, but patterns were already in place for virtually the entire staff, such that the Twins were in the risk management position akin to trying to draw 3 cards to hit an inside straight with their opening day SP staff.
  3. You should have stuck to your guns, Nick. Duensing had his niche role filled perfectly. (cc this to Snepp:p) You are walking out on a thin limb, though, by cavalierly suggesting that Duensing will end up as the best starter out of the 6 mentioned (Duensing + Vasquez, Hendriks, Hernandez, Hermsen, Hirschfield). The rotation is a mess, this is the perfect time to find out what else you have in SP pitching depth before you start making the hard financial decisions that might include locking up Carl Pavano-type money (or more) to someone as you construct a 2013 rotation in the offseason. Nobody saw what the Twins had in Diamond, I certainly don't remember your prediction, or mine, about him as an "alternative" (more importantly, the Twins, themselves!). I'd say now is the time to find out if there are cheaper and less risky alternatives to high-dollar acquisitions. There is absolutely nothing to lose by finding out more about what you don't know, then to learn the same information that you already knew.
  4. If you take out the part of your post that starts with "It's not so much...", and ends with "...More so,", I'm in 100% agreement with you. I argued along those lines previously this spring that the nightmare of 2011 so coldcocked the Twins that they were unable to move forward with "the plan" as envisioned in 2009- and were returning to their comfort zone of the late 70s/early 80s and 90s years of meciocrity while they pare the payroll of existing big $ contracts.
  5. The onus is on you to keep up with the conversation.
  6. Or is it you, displaying your ignorance by not actually finding our public conversations on the matter?
  7. OK, then not very thoroughly thought out then? (Given the alternatives I posted previously who still actually have a chance at some sort of success as a SP).
  8. What evidence prompted the change in heart in 2012?
  9. You're not looking very hard.
  10. "Injustice" is an entirely inappropriate overstatement to me. Surely, both the Twins, Mauer, and his agent knew what they were getting into and what the possible, or likely, implications and consequences would be by signing the type of deal they jointly entered. I don't think any court in the land would find that Mauer has been done any "injustice" at all. This statement is just plain silly and absurd on its face.
  11. Which is :banghead: -worthy when TR, Gardy, Andy and Nick Nelson continue to insist that the Dunce is starting material. Why do they continue with this proven and obviously pre-destined to fail strategy in a losing season, when you have nothing to lose seeing what Vasquez and any one of the "4H'ers" readily available (Hendriks, Hernandez, Hermsen, Hirschfield) have to offer?
  12. Are you referring to Leviathan........ or Terry Ryan?
  13. My vote for the choice the Twins end up making is a MI consisting of Carroll, Dozier and "someone currently in the minors" (Escobar most likely), although it would be quite easy to trade a prospect for an equivalent or small upgrade to the latter two- at close to the same amount they're paying for the MI this year.
  14. That's the thing about sequels, they're never as good as the original....
  15. Who said wholesale change in ethnic composition? Shaking up the moribund thinking by bringing in quality guys with legitimate pedigree of any ethnicity has been the mantra in this thread. If one or two is Latino with high pedigree it just means value-added.
  16. Thanks for the encouraging words, especially on Sano. Rosario's just coming back from fracturing his face, as is Vargas from his situation. I see Sano's OBP and SLG #s have really jumped in July and Aug from the lows in May/June. It would be nice to see all 3 developing enough to be knocking at the door in Sep '14.
  17. If Pudge and Steiny could be talked into it, why not bring Tim Belcher out of retirement, too? Proven track record and knows the AL well.
  18. How about he pitched really badly? 4 hits, a HR and DB, a WP and BB. This qualifies as a setback for sure. More Duensing and Deduno.
  19. Writing while you posted. You state with more up-to-date accuracy of what I tried to get across in my previous post. Do you see Sano or Rosario playing both A+/AA next year? Is their fielding improved enough to say they are on track towards becoming ML 2B and 3B? Or are the Twins stretching this out and hoping it can still happen?
  20. Seth and others had this discussion two months ago. Last year in Rookie League, Sano had a BB% rate of 7.8% and this year its nearly doubled to 15.1% while his K% is about the same. The folks who had seen the Snappers play stated that the league appeared to be pitching around Sano. And there wasn't much hitting talent surrounding him in the order, especially magnified with Rosario and Vargas missing big chunks of the season. Agreed on rushing him, the Twins definitely don't want to start the arb clock prematurely, especially with his continuing problems at 3B- making it problematic about where he ultimately ends up playing in the field.
  21. All that you say here does make perfect basic business sense, and yet, the Twins have repeatedly demontrated, to put it kindly, ineptitude, with regards to business sense and ability to manage risk- throughout their enitre transition to a big-market payroll. Given TR's past performance, I predict that they are still smarting from all the horrible and costly mistakes, and choose to stay cautious and fiscally conservative. This is a rebuilding team, whether management admits it publicly or not.
  22. Wow, great article, always liked him, and not one, but two Latins on the coaching staff, Jack? Love it! Especially as we prepare for the Sano, Rosario and Berrios era. I gotta think the "barrio" effect is a reality on many teams with Anglo/African-American-only coaching staffs. I'll scout around for some supporting evidence. I know it's an old story and things have changed some, but Clemente, Marichal and Cepeda felt pretty isolated and put-upon during their big league careers, and Ortiz and the Twins obviously had some communication problems.
  23. Mauer's WAR is goosed as a part-time C.
