  1. Great point, jorgen. I immediately thought of Rand after that 9th-inning game-winner. In watching the Strib writers over the last few years with Mauer and some others who get in their doghouse, they seem that they like to set themselves up in the "sweet spot" between their readers who love to hate Mauer and the unbending Mauer supporters who feel he can do no wrong. I'm guessing a guy like Rand probably felt like he gets a little credit for Mauer's great game last night by sticking the pre-game needle in deep and getting the desired reaction, and yet, if Mauer had failed, he now had more fodder to pile on in another column next week.
  2. Yeah Mike, it feels kind of weird being on this side of the ball. But really, with everything that went down on Monday, August 11, 2014, to me it felt like such a watershed moment for the Twins near-future fortunes.
  3. Hey, I want a piece of that action...!
  4. Exactly right. In the 5 games before Buck's most recent wrist injury on July 18, he was seemingly back to his 2013 form, with 2 HR and a triple among 11 hits in 22 ABs. Yeah, he isn't all the way back to his 2013 #1 prospect-status-level, but with this promotion, the Twins are rightly positioning him for the next step to 2015 major-league-readiness. New Britain has 23 games remaining in 21 days, giving Buxton a good chance to get 100+ AA-level PAs. He can follow up these at bats with playoff games in either AAA or A+, or better yet, if he really starts to click, he can add a September call-up followed by maybe another 90-100 PAs in the AFL. That could mean close to 300 PAs at much more advanced levels, potentially really salvaging a lost season and paving the way for a quicker call-up to the Twins in 2015.
  5. Good moves, but miles to go before they sleep. You're right that this process should have started sooner, but I really like that the Twins acquired and flipped Morales and Fuld, well-played TR!. Pryor seems to be shaping up in Rochester ("currently topping out at 95 MPH"), and Milone is a young and solid back-rotation guy that should project well at TF. Still some more, older deadwood that needs thnning. Let's see if TR has some more magic up his sleeve.
  6. Nope. The Twins are sending him right to New Britain and back into the starting rotation. The kid is still very young, still a good chance to resume an SP career path. Good trade for TR.
  7. Trevor May*** and Logan Darnell are carrying a combined no-hitter into the bottom of the 9th inning (for Rochester). *** May's innings from a suspended game.
  8. So it's a pitcher who went down then? h
  9. The braintrust must still be making decisions on Mauer, Plouffe and Arcia. Everyone else in the 7PM hour has their lineups out Mike Berardino ‏@MikeBerardino 4m#mntwins appear overmatched
  10. Sam Fuld Center Field RF/G 3.19 (ranks #1 in CF who have played over 50 games) Aaron Hicks Center Field RF/G 2.84 Danny Santana Center Field RF/G 2.51 Chris Parmelee Center Field RF/G 2.00 Max Kepler Center Field RF/G 2.07 in 56 games. put into FSL/Buxton-esque perspective: Byron Buxton Center Field RF/G 2.96
  11. Michael Rand pressed some hot buttons in his Startrib column today, choosing to lead his story of Mauer's imminent reinstatement with Joe pictured in his hammock. A respondent included a less-than-flattering picture from the MN Twins Celebrity Golf Tourney last winter. http://blog.startribune.com/sports/randball/monday-the-return-of-joe-mauer-edition-wha-happened I think Rand wants Mauer to get it back in gear, pronto. http://mediaassets.naplesnews.com/photo/2014/05/30/120229CP-KJ-GOLF12_5426153_ver1.0_640_480.jpg
  12. Thankyou. And part of that comes from delaying their progress/failing to generate proper progress through the minors. I think the Twins have tried to address this issue through the draft with all of the college RP arms drafted of late.
  13. The days the Twins have rostered 13 and 14 pitchers has been cut back quite a bit, pretty sure it hasn't been a majority of the time. And there shouldn't be a "need" for shuttle guys, they should just be there at the ready as a rule of course, to avoid most of the oft-embarrassing moments with a thin bench that comes from guys getting dinged up short-term and being unavailable for a few days.
  14. Actually, he's more significantly accelerated his performance recently, Max has performed extremely well at the plate over the last month. There's an 8 day DL stint mixed in here... but since July 13, Kepler's slash line is .370/.443/.500/.943, while cutting way back on the K% to only 9.7% (his BB% is up marginally from 9.1% to 9.7% during this stretch)... he has no homers during this streak, apparently, looking for contact and line drives over the long ball. He's teased us before, but perhaps this current streak bears watching to see if it's something more sustainable to build on going into 2015.
  15. I agree they had these guys, but for the most part, they weren't being utilized on the shuttle plan. Carrying the extra pitcher or two was the norm for much of 2012 and 2013.
  16. Yes. It's great to see the Twins FO finally grasp and utililize the concept more frequently....Pino, and possibly Johnson (?) have much greater potential value going forward than the typical AAAA pitcher because of it.... it's a far cry better than carrying 13 and 14 pitchers as Gardy is wont to prefer, leaving him frequently in embarrassing bench situations such as yesterday with only Fryer at the ready.
  17. Yup. And it makes it real easy to keep the starting-OF love affair going forward for the time being with Schafer, as well.
  18. Pretty close, but I have to think if a halfway decent offer comes down the pike for Duensing, the Twins pull the trigger and open up a spot that way. (And any offer on Burton or Swarzak, as well, their time seems past done with the Twins).
  19. Hopefully, there are no worries about innings restrictions for a prospect RP. Burdi now is set up to pitch for the Miracle in the playoffs... in the fall, possibly to the AFL or with the Twins instructionals...AA to start next year...with a good chance for a mid-season call-up. Hopefully Zach Jones is getting fully healthy again, as well.
  20. More discouragingly, on the broadcast Dick was convinced that Shaeffer was "exactly the type of guy" that the Twins were looking for to "upgrade" the Twins 25-man roster going to into next season...
  21. Gardy said Arcia was unavailable to pinch hit today, a decision will be made on him tomorrow. (Also, Plouffe's X-ray was negative, but he's also day-to-day).
  22. In postgame, Gardy said Arcia was unavailable to pinch hit today, and no decisions on the roster moves until tomorrow (but Mauer appears to be one of them, along with Milone).
  23. Yup, especially up until NBC/MTM fired Bochco and jumped the shark several times with character changes/kill offs.
  24. I'd qualify that "it", a bit, Halsey. He had "it" figured out a year ago, he was already on his way in AA. And for all intents and purposes, he had "it" figured out again before the most recent HBP to his good wrist...from his return after two months off from the first wrist injury he slashed... .367/.472/.633/1.106...and then, really cranking it up from 7-13 to 7-18 (that was the night he was hit in the right wrist, when he went 4-6 with a HR and reached base 7 times)- Buxton was fully back to "it", his true old self, slashing .500/.593/.864/1.456. It's just a shame what a lost season this has been for Buck, had he been fully healthy all season, there seems little doubt that he would already be ensconced in CF with the Twins, with Santana starting at SS. Hopefully he can make up for it in fall and winter league play, setting himself up for an early call-up in 2015.
  25. Given how Liriano and Worley have done with Pittsburgh, Correia is likely to do well with a fresh start and a better team....plus, back in his home state, and with his former boss, Ned Colletti.
