  1. The fastball, curve and slider all graded out very similarly. The change up has the worst scores in his arsenal.
  2. Arcia is way too much for Saunders. Kepler seems reasonable. Maybe even Rosario (similarly embattled) or Pinto (only if the Twins can't see him staying at C).
  3. I really like this one. Probably because the last sentence hits home. I'd even call it endearing. ...hmmm, so that would make TR the wife?
  4. If the message is so well known and it's all TR's fault, then why does the cheap owners meme continue to circulate?
  5. I now have no idea of what to expect for the payroll next year. $80M? 90M? 100M? I do read this as putting some fire under TR to put a winning team together by removing the possibility of payroll as an excuse. http://m.startribune.com/sports/twins/281877141.html
  6. Disagree with it all you want and make the case for otherwise, but the fact remains that plenty of people see some amount of "ugly" in it given the context of this specific situation. There is zero reason to think Renteria wouldn't be coaching the Cubs next year otherwise. This pure cutthroat approach to the manager position is "ugly". For the record, the context of Little/Torre was quite different.
  7. There is little (no?) precedent for replacing a sitting manager only after another candidate comes available. The standard is determining the need for a change and then finding the best person to fill the vacancy. Whether the Cubs told Renteria it was coming or not doesn't remove the "ugly" that many people see in the situation.
  8. Came across an interesting article from Pirates coverage that analyzed how playoff teams distribute their payroll dollars: http://triblive.com/sports/pirates/7036813-74/payroll-rodriguez-tigers The Twins spent roughly 26% of their payroll on Joe Mauer last year and greater than 20% in each of the last 4 seasons. The Twins spent roughly 65% of their payroll on the five highest-paid players (using the pre-season roster and payroll). The easy answer here is to blame Joe Mauer, but I think we're also seeing a shortage of young, successful players that needed to be extended/retained. In order to get their top-paid player to equate to less than 17% of their payroll like the vast majority of playoff teams, the Twins would need a payroll of $135M. It's hard to envision the Twins reaching that number within the next few years, so they will need to be an exception in order to make the playoffs. That could be very possible if prospects and young players turn into a swell of successful, league-minimum paid players.
  9. I should clarify that I don't think Buehrle is the best fit to fill that "new acquisition". I'd much rather see someone who can matter going past next year... like a Masterson on a deal with options, a trade for a younger guy with at least 2 years remaining or another long-term FA like Ervin Santana. If none of those work out, then a one-year guy who could be flipped at the deadline makes sense... but Buehrle might be making too much even at that point to bring back a decent prospect.
  10. Nailed it.
  11. Are you saying they don't?
  12. Yet another example of jumping to conclusions and making false facts out of preliminary, partial information? Shocking.
  13. I disagree. Holding an interview under false pretenses to manage perceptions is extremely unprofessional.
  14. His answers leave me confident that we can expect the Twins' payroll to more commonly rank closer to 17-20 than 24 with the flexibility to go higher when they are winning more, "outperform" the TC market and need to retain homegrown talent (that last one was answered later). I think he pretty clearly dispels some notions we've seen around here about consistently not spending their stated payroll capacity and the impact of Target Field. Thanks for taking the laser eye beams, guys.
  15. What happened to the 'Ignore' button? Some of this rage is getting ridiculous...
  16. Have the Twins ever exceeded the 50-52% of revenues for payroll guidance in the last 15 years? "Yes, often." [with emphasis] Roughly where do the Twins rank among other MLB teams in their ability to generate revenue? How different would this be without Target Field? "It would be greatly different. In the Metrodome, we were certainly I would say if not the bottom 2 or 3, certainly bottom 5. I would have compared ourselves in the Metrodome to, say, the Tampa Bay situation, the Oakland situation or the Miami Marlins, certainly before they moved in to Marlins Park. At this point, we're probably going to be somewhere middle of the pack to lower middle of the pack, I'd say. In Target Field in 2010, we outperformed our market. I'd like to think if we're competitive on the field, we can continue to outperform our market. I think in terms of baseball teams, we're about 19th when you include the 2 NY teams, the 2 Chicago teams, the 2 LA teams, so, you know, we're performing a little bit below that right now and I think we should be outperforming our market. The reason we're not performing at that level is, frankly, because the team is not cooperating and our attendance has fallen below the league average, which about 2.5M people."
  17. I can definitely see the PR aspect of it being concerning. Who dismisses them out of hand though? Maddon's comments don't sound like that has happened here...
  18. Why not call him? Call him. Why not interview him? Interview him. Why not hire him? ... No matter what, the final answer there is the Twins are cheap. I'd hope we can get a deeper level of analysis here on TD. I can get plenty of that in the strib comments. I don't see how it adds value to the conversation. Yes, Maddon will be well paid. With all the talk of front office jobs, wouldn't it make sense to think he's looking for more responsibility that just being the coach? Maybe he wants full authority over the 25 man roster? Maybe he wants more? Maybe he wants a guaranteed GM job in three years? Maybe TR doesn't want to cede any of that to his manager and maybe, just maybe... it's not definitively 100% about the money because the Twins are so cheap.
  19. Okay, a phone call will not physically hurt anything. No small children will suffer if TR calls Joe Maddon. That doesn't mean it accomplishes anything. Is knowing he called all it would take to feel satisfied here? I'm almost sure the answer is no.
  20. Why does making a phone call or conducting an interview even matter? Simply to placate people that the Twins were interested? We're being extremely cynical if we don't think TR has enough information to decide whether that is needed. Disagree with that decision plenty, but all the noise about not calling him is missing the bigger picture. Let's contemplate why TR might not need to have Maddon come in for an interview... Money is obviously the easiest answer, but might be too lazy. What else might there be? (And his thick glasses don't count as a real answer.)
  21. Dial his number to confirm what you already know? Why do we assume that an MLB GM isn't connected enough to know what he's looking for? That seems ridiculous. "Uh, hi Joe. I already know you're looking for x, but could you verify that for me and then also be sure to start mentioning to the media that we had a chat?" Really??
  22. Is it possible that Maddon is looking for more than just the opportunity to be the coach for a different team making more money? That would certainly make sense to me based on what we've heard. That's all I'm saying. It could very well be about the money, but let's look at the whole picture as well.
  23. I highly doubt that TR doesn't know what Maddon is looking for. It doesn't take officially reaching out to Maddon to find that out. I probably have to go with TR isn't interesting in meeting his needs. That could be money, but could just as well be about the terms of the position and the amount of power. Not sure yet, but we'll have a better idea based on where he ends up and what it looks like as he says he's willing to wait for the right opportunity.
  24. I completely agree there's room to add a starter on this roster. I'd heavily question that a 35 year old with one year remaining at $19M is the best way to do that.
  25. Are we in favor of committing to the rebuild or going after veterans? I'm seeing a lot of both and they don't seem to align.
