  1. I also feel that Morneau is the heart and soul of the current team. I don't care if his stats are comparable to Chris Davis--the gut tells me the team is far better when he is in the lineup. Unless he is on fire and brings back a true prospect, I'd hate to see him go. Having said that, for some reason St. Louis seems like the place.
  2. Thanks for doing this guys. I like the box score links. Tough day for the organization, but nice to see Bromberg hold is own with a top prospect. I'm thinking the Twins are incredibly lucky they didn't lose him.
  3. Check out Seth's latest Top 50 prospect installment. Plenty of recently drafted pitchers that shouldn't be categorized as "soft-tossers." The whole soft-tossing/pitch to contact complaint has grown pretty cliche. The Twins have taken shots with the likes of Hunt, Bashore, Tootle, etc, and see where those guys are now. Seems like people think these SO machines grow on trees. I'd argue that the current state of Twins Organizational pitching is possibly a result of getting away from drafting the likes of Slowey and Perkins and Hendriks and having too many high draft picks like the aforementioned group washout.
  4. "Just" another day off for Sano? Are they just trying to show some mercy on Beloit? My theory: not really a day off--he probably fielded 500 balls in the morning. Clearly his defense is the only thing holding him back. Great day for the Twins all-around!
  5. Thanks. I enjoy reading this kind of first hand stuff.
  6. Kind of weird/interesting that the Twins' two best hitting prospects have birthdays one day apart. Happy Birthday Miguel and Oswaldo. The bad news for Twins pitching just keeps coming. Salcedo looks to be having a lost year. Its almost a blessing that the Twins aren't winning, as it will be an easy choice to trade veterans for pitching prospects.
  7. This should serve as a little wake-up call for everybody else on the team as well not named Joe, Josh, or Justin. I was excited at the start of the year when I looked at the lineup--on base guys, power guys, speed guys. The lineup last night made me wince. Do you think Plouffe will get an extended look at 3B? Or RF? Can they bring up Bates and get Parmalee to AAA where he needs to be?
  8. Cool research. I think the NFL draft skews the way people look at the baseball draft a tad. Totally different beasts. The risks with pitchers are enormous comparatively, as pointed out above. I'm not sure if this is a fair comparison, but compare Zunino and Appel/Zimmer whomever, with Montero and Pineda. Go with the guy who plays every day at a premium position, and then like every other team, hope you can find the next Roger Clemens a bit lower.
  9. Full strength Mauer catching 120 games plus Doumit catching 35 games plus Butera catching 7 games still equals the best catcher in baseball. Casilla is the only player in the starting lineup likely to get pinch hit for, and their will almost always be a Plouffe or a Parmalee or a Burroughs on the bench. Not worried about this at all.
  10. I hope Sano's glove can keep up with his bat! Reading the game story, he's quoted several times and comes off as a thoughtful, well-spoken young man. Plus it mentions there is a documentary film in post-production, titled "Pelotero," about his and another countryman's signing process. The film was produced by Bobby Valentine, no less. Rosario's fifth error--anybody know how he looks at second base? He's yet to show any power at all, although he is stealing lots of bases and has his average up close to .300. Arcia seems to be striking out a ton. Revere and Benson not hitting much, though Benson seems to be getting on base. Did you notice New Britain's opponent went 6-8 stealing bases of Lehmann/French? What a great night for Twins baseball--one late homerun away from a sweep!
  11. Remind me again where Colabello came from, please. Morales is tearing it up in Ft. Myers; would be cool to see him promoted after it warms up a bit. I know the popular belief is the Twins sold low on Slowey, but this Turpen kid looks alright. Thanks for the write up.
  12. Hopefully not bad news for Gutierrez. He's one of the guys I think of when people are constantly claiming the Twins only draft soft-tossing control guys. Shooter Hunt was another. Tyler Robertson almost deserved pitcher of the day for getting out of that jam. Any word on why Arcia has been out of the lineup lately? Not a good defensive day for the Beloit infield...
  13. Nice touch on the Hicks photo. Hope its nothing serious with Dozier.
  14. It's always nice when there are some positive to talk about in the Twins' organization. Thanks! Sano and Rosario and Dozier are nice, but obvious. It's nice to see a guy like Bigley stepping up. He's hitting well and the PO to Hermann sounded impressive for both guys--great throw, great catch, and impressive tag.
  15. Not to be negative, but Michaels and Rosario both notched their second errors. Jairo Perez could've won the game but was caught off base. Sheesh, just one of those days. If Rosario and Sano can continue to repeat their little 'competition' from last year, its going to be an exciting year.
  16. Honestly, who the hell knows. I'm not excited about Jeff Gray at all and expect his ERA to be astronomical when he gets cut. If Parmalee only has nine homers that probably means he slumps so much he gets demoted.
  17. I was surprised by the move as well. Plouffe had a decent spring, but Hughes' was better. Either it was a gross over-thinking by Gardy, or a gut-instinct move. I'll got with the latter.
  18. Woohoo! Baseball! Thanks for the recaps, Seth. I like the pictures for players of the day--nice to put a face to a name. Morales and Arcia...nice.
  19. Starting pitching is scary. I hope they send Swarzak to Rochester and stretch him out. He's been a decent starter for periods. Other than that, I guess you've got Diamond and Manship. Maybe Maloney. Not exciting, but maybe not any worse than Lannan. Bullpen--lets wait and see. Not too worried yet. At least there are a few hopeful arms in reserve should the current ones fail. Its hard to be too critical of Ryan, at least as far as the bullpen goes. Pitching is volatile, injuries likely but often hard to predict. Look at the closers that have all gone down already: Soria, Madson, Bailey, and now Farnsworth.
  20. Very cool write-up. I love this kind of insight. Thanks for sharing. I'm bullish on Wimmers as well.
  21. The lack of starting pitchers at AAA really jumps out. Makes me wonder if Wimmers will be on a really fast track. Other things-- *Bummer about Stuiffy. Hope its nothing serious. I thought it was commendable he made a decent emergency start at AAA last year. *For some reason I get the feeling De Los Santos will have a big year. *I've got to do something to quit mixing up Luis Dedomo and Sam Perduno. Luckily Jason Bulger is gone, so there won't be any confusion with Jared Burton. *Nice looking lineups across the board. Can't wait to start perusing box scores every morning!
  22. One of the big gaps, despite all the great blogging, is how it is for minor league guys who slip threw the cracks. Solarte was a personal favorite of mine watching the minors last year, and he was unceremoniously dumped, as were a bunch of semi-hi profile minor league players this spring--early on like Pedro Guerra, and later like the Tarsi's and Bashores. I'm not saying I'm critical of management, I just wish I knew more about the nuts and bolts of it.
  23. What is the centerfield depth chart? I.e. if Span were hurt (knock on wood) would they move Revere over and bring up the Maestro as a backup or would they just bring Benson up? At any rate, it seems likely that Hendriks will get a shot pretty early. I like Dozier, and I think he'll be the starting SS by years end. Not sure if he'll get more from being "seasoned" at AAA or from hanging around actual big-leaguers, starting a 3 or 4 times a week, etc. Parmalee seems the most blocked of the four. Now that I write it, I'm going out on a limb and saying Dozier breaks camp with the Twins. Give Carroll and Casilla each two days off a week.
  24. Nice worK! Your analysis is fairly close to the Twins' apparently, judging by early demotions. Guys like Gray, Bulger, Doyle, etc. are more likely to be jettisoned than sent to AAA. If you have the time, how about a spreadsheet with former and potential (your Todd Coffeys and Dan Wheelers) bullpen guys vs. what is in-house?
