  1. Pelfrey will definitely will be getting a chance to be on the team in 2015. Whether it is starting or in the bullpen will depend on who the manager / coaching staff is.
  2. If only the playoffs didn't happen during Football season in KC . . . (I realize that there was no overlap this weekend with the Monday Night Chiefs game)
  3. Yeah, I think the current format (rightfully) gives the division winners and especially the division winners with the best record a noticeable advantage in the playoffs. MLB was never going to go back to having just a World Series with the best two teams, or even LCS with the two best from each league playing for a chance at the WS, so adding teams while handicapping them makes competitive sense to me. It gives more teams a chance to break through, but rewards the teams that had the best records.
  4. Oh - you're right - Kennedy is a bad example then. The overall point is that I don't think the Twins should ignore NL arms, just be more selective about which ones they go after.
  5. How about a guy like Ian Kennedy or Brett Anderson who pitched for years in the AL but were in the NL last year?
  6. That is interesting - maybe with a different manager, Pelfrey gets the same opportunity, but perhaps will have to be better than he was in the spring of 2014 to make the rotation in 2015. A new manager and new pitching coach just makes Pelfrey's future murkier.
  7. Even if Terry Ryan is still around, dismissing Gardenhire seemingly will have a domino effect on the kind of players that the Twins will be looking for this off-season. There's no need for a third catcher, the bullpen can remain relatively "small" - it may mean that the Twins make some interesting moves this offseason for position players that would not have been considered otherwise...
  8. By letting Gardenhire go now, he leaves with a winning record overall. If he had another season under .500, it's a good chance he'd have a losing record overall. He's 1,068-1,039 as of the end of 2014.
  9. If he's not retiring, I bet he's going to be getting offers and interviews very soon.
  10. Yowza - you could knock me over with a feather!
  11. They just aren't the same without Tommy Milone.
  12. I think the Royals this year are a bit better than just Shields. He may walk after this year, but I don't think they are going to lose that much talent compared to what they currently have. The Royals probably have a shorter shopping list than most of the AL Central. The Tigers need to re-build their bullpen (again) and will probably need to replace Scherzer and V-Mart; Cleveland needs major offensive and defensive upgrades in the infield, and RF, and DH. The Sox are a mess. The Twins are still a mess. The Royals? They probably will need to replace James Shields and find a bench bat or two with Willingham and Ibanez likely retiring.
  13. I have high Hopes for Walker, but I don't think he's going to make it beyond AAA in 2015.
  14. Kemp, Crawford, and Ethier are the guys the Dodgers want to move. Joc Pederson, Scott Van Slyke, and Yasiel Puig are the Future. LA won't want to move all three guys at once, but I think at least one of those three guys will be traded in the offseason. Whether or not the Twins have the right package of players to get one of those guys remains to be seen. Gerardo Parra, Justin Upton, Cespedes, Austin Jackson, and Drew Stubbs are just a few of the guys that will be due to be free agents after 2015. If their current teams can't (or don't want to) extend them, they may be trade candidates during the offseason or in 2015.
  15. I thought 4 straight losing seasons was emulating the Royals. ba-dum-tiss.
  16. I think the Twins were the right mix of bold and conservative with Hughes' workload this year - he pitched a career high in innings (he's never gone 200 innings before). I think the pitches per inning stat is a pretty good argument, though. Hughes has taken himself out of some games this year, it seems like he's at peace with the season he's had (I mean, he should be pumped after breaking a ML record and having his best season in years). It's too bad that he was a little short, but in the end I don't think it was mis-management. He had a start pushed back due to a rain delay earlier in the month, so he actually could have had another whole start at the end of the season. Next season, I bet he gets a longer leash. He's proven that he's the lead dog in this rotation.
  17. Hughes' quote "some things aren't meant to be" - I think it's a good attitude to have, he really surprised everyone in the league with a brilliant season. If the Twins get some decent Outfielders behind him and another starter to share the load with him (that starter might be on the roster already), I bet he gets 210 next year.
  18. Yes, but it was a Career high for innings pitched by Hughes, so it is impressive even coming up short that he did as much as he did.
  19. The other part to this is that he did get a bonus for reaching 180 innings, and a second bonus for reaching 195 innings. Should he get a third bonus for not reaching 210 innings? As others have noted, he made 31 other starts this year. That last out could have come from any of 30 of those (he did have one complete game). I do think it is a nuanced argument for both sides. It would be a win for Hughes obviously, and possibly a boon for the Twins' chances of landing another free agent if they feel the Twins treat their players better than another suitor might.
  20. $500,000 is almost the salary Kyle Gibson had for the whole season. Other guys that made 500,000 or a little more this year - Josmil Pinto, Colabello, Stephen Pryor, Aaron Hicks, Eduardo Escobar, Thielbar, Parmelee, Milone, Arcia, Fien, Brian Dozier. I think it's probably a good thing that Hughes doesn't make a big deal out of it. He shows leadership / team unity by not vocally calling to get the bonus. On the other hand, some of the guys on that list could be in line for significant future paydays that would like include performance bonuses, I bet they'd want the Twins to set the precedent that bonuses can be earned for performing up to the threshhold as well as beyond it. I agree that giving Hughes the bonus makes the Twins more attractive to possible free agents. Suzuki had those "games played" bonuses this year, Gardy has done everything he can to help Suzuki get there (in addition to Suzuki playing above expectations).
  21. I went to more games this year (10, plus the futures game) than I have since I was a teenager buying the $4 knothole Upper Deck GA Metrodome seats all summer. The Twins won 6 of those games, I count myself lucky to have seen that much success in this season. For a season ticket holder, I'm sure the losing as gotten really hard to swallow. I really enjoyed going to the games and I will be trying to beat my new Target Field attendance record. The silver lining for me is that I should be able to get some cheaper tickets in better locations. I always have the hope that the team will improve, I think realistically it will be 2016 before they are in contention for a playoff spot and 2017 (if they continue to improve) before they are ready for winning a playoff game or two.
  22. Maybe the training / medical staff is still terrible? Pelfrey - out for the season Nolasco - injured most of the year Perkins - shut down, out for the season Pino - out for the season Milone - shut down, out for the season Meyer - shut down, out for the season (not on the 40-Man anyway)
  23. Which guy would have been better? Logan Darnell I think is the only other guy on the roster that isn't injured or already in the rotation.
  24. Yeah, TR does not sound like he's a fan of Swarzak as a starter.
