Game Thread 4/26/2020: BOS (15-14) @ MIN (15-13) 1:10pmCT
thuuuuney replied to thuuuuney's topic in Minnesota Twins Talk
Because of schoolwork the full post-game won't be up until tomorrow, so for now here's the highlight of the day! https://www.twitch.tv/thuuuuney/clip/GenerousBrightMagpieEleGiggleAlso if you want to watch today's game here is the link, start at 22:10 if you would like to skip the pre-game. https://www.twitch.tv/videos/603410329 -
Catch-Up After back to back pitcher's duels, we head into game three with the series on the line and another prospective pitcher's duel on our hands as former Twin Martin Perez squares off against Kenta Maeda. Congrats to the winner's of the SotaStick giveaway yesterday with TWINGO and for those who missed out TWINGO will be coming back when the Twins are back at Target Field on May 4th. Bomba Tracker - 2019 through 28 games: 50 - 2020: 38 Storylines 1. Back to back 2-1 ballgames pit the series down to the final game. Although your broadcaster doesn't think this will end 2-1 as well, both starters enter the game with sub 2.32 ERA's and the Twins have shown this year they have been boom or bust against a Lefty on the mound. 2. After Xander Bogaerts lost his 22-Game Hitting Streak, it was prevalent that Boston thus far has leaned on his bat for success. Of the 98 combined RBI's in Boston's starting lineup today, 58.1% of the runs have come from three bats: Devers, Xander, and Martinez. For Boston to come out on top today, they'll need a more balanced distribution of runs out of the lineup card. 3. After today's game the Red Sox begin an ever-important battle with the 17-11 Blue Jays as Boston early in April are trying to claw back into the AL East picture. Meanwhile the Twins have a day off on Monday, and then on Tuesday will begin a two game series with the best team in baseball, the 23-5 Dodgers.

Preface I have a number of people who rely on the post-game wrap because they can't be there for the livestream and I appreciate all of the people who have tuned in thus far, with that being said my online classes for college have ramped up and I am behind but I will work to have them up every night going foward. Miss the game? https://www.twitch.tv/videos/602409597 Want to skip the pre-game? Time Stamp 32:20After losing game of the series 2-1 in an all out pitcher's duel, the Twins looked to come back to Target Field and even the series up behind the surprisingly strong performance of Homer Bailey. Bailey entered the game in the top 12 in the American League for ERA as well as top three in WHIP and would have to prove it today against some of the best bats in baseball with Boston. But before the game, your broadcaster donated to the #OneMN campaign and thanks to that, our Virtual Twins got a shoutout from the real broadcaster of the Minnesota Twins. https://clips.twitch.tv/GlutenFreeGoldenMacaroniKippaSo after your broadcaster freaked out for a little bit, there was still baseball to be had and boy did we have another great on tap today. After Homer Bailey would set the first two men down, the 3B Rafael Devers would make Bailey pay for a center-cut heater. https://clips.twitch.tv/SuperHelplessFlyOpieOPThroughout today's broadcast you'll hear mention of "Twingo," and this was something I wanted to do to bring Target Field-like promotions to those in the viewing audience and today we were giving away an awesome shirt from SotaStick. There will be more promotions in the future for those who missed out. But back to our ballgame the score would hold at 1-0 for a good while, but then Mitch Garver stepped in the home-half of the 4th, trying to break his cold streak. https://clips.twitch.tv/UnsightlyExquisiteWebJonCarnageOffensively the day would belong to Mitch Garver, as he would register Bomba #2 and put the Twins in front. https://www.twitch.tv/thuuuuney/clip/CloudyTriumphantMoonAllenHuhuWe would then venture all the way to the 8th inning, where Trevor May, after a lead off walk, was in a battle with Alex Verdugo with the game on the line. The tenth pitch of the at-bat coming from May the 2-2... https://clips.twitch.tv/CovertVibrantBadgerPanicVisThe Twins tight rope out of danger as they so often do and would head on the 9th inning looking for some insurance runs. After getting the lead off man on, the Twins would ground into another double play and we headed to the top of the ninth... https://clips.twitch.tv/SwissSpoopyBeaverM4xHehRodgers would not break that chain and he would hold steady, and the Twins win game two of the series the same way we scored game one, 2-1. Promotion I started this off yesterday and luckily for everyone who wasn't there yesterday, nobody won Twingo. I have made today's cards a bit easier in the hopes someone can win this shirt given to me by SotaStick Co. As I mentioned yesterday one of the things I have been wanting to do with these streams is bring a real feel to them and what better way to celebrate some baseball at Target Field than with a promotion. So today it's TWINGO Round #2 and on the line for the winner is this shirt from SotaStick Co. Brief Rules: Linked here will be five cards. Comment in Twitch chat which of the four cards you are playing with and then you are stuck with that card. Let's say you pick card #3 and you win but three other people pick card three and win as well, I will draw a random name of said three people.Link for TWINGO Cards: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1t94Ajsn-YRACuXNu_yySn2xA161f70a0zsMslpt3uoo/edit?usp=sharingApparel being given away courtesy of SotaStick (Sizes S-4XL). https://sotastickco.com/collections/mn-baseball/products/homer-t-shirtCatch-Up With the "rain out," on Thursday the Twins held a doubleheader on Friday and split the day with a 5-2 win over Seattle, followed up by a heartbreaker, a 2-1 lose to Boston. With Cleveland continuing to slide down, it'll be up to Homer Bailey to try and help Minnesota inch ever closer to the AL Central lead. Meanwhile in somewhat unprecedented action, the Twins will lean on their hottest started in Homer Bailey to try and even the series while the offense will look to finally light the fuse and awaken the Bomba Squad. 3. Tomorrow's contest will feature former Twin, Martin Perez, going for Boston and one of the best strikeout artists in the American League in Kenta Maeda.

Promotion Night I thought one of the things missing without having Twins baseball at Target Field was the promotions they'd have at the ballpark so tonight is our first one! I have partnered up with SotaStick and are giving away this shirt tonight to the first person who wins Twingo. Quick Note I have been reaching out to try and do some good with these streams of Twins "baseball," and back a charity for the games. Whether it be a charity related to COVID-19 relief, feeding families, etc, if anyone knows of a charity we could help out message me directly. Catch-up Tough ballgame yesterday as the Twins drop game two 4-2 against Seattle, but still sit only 3.0 games back of Cleveland and will look to move ahead in the series with Jhoulys Chacin, who went 8 1/3 shutout innings his last start, against the ace of the Mariner rotation in Marco Gonzales. We mentioned yesterday that the game might be a bullpen game but for now Rocco will go with Chacin to start but expect Dobnak and Romero to come in if needed. Catch-up The Twins move back to .500 at home with their second walk-off win of the year courtesy of Byron Buxton and will look to take game two of the series tonight with Kenta Maeda on the mound for Minnesota. The Twins have won three of the last four and tonight will face off against Justin Dunn for Seattle, who the Twins beat 10-2 back on March 30th of this season. What a performance out of the pen yesterday from Fernando Romero, a man on the cusp of possibly going back to Rochester pitches four brilliant no-hit innings to help secure the victory yesterday. While he enjoys a much deserved day off, the Twins turn to Kenta Maeda, who leads the team in strikeouts, for game two. 2. With the next off-day not until the 27th, the Twins will shake the lineup a little to give some rest to key members of the Bomba Squad. Today Miguel Sano and Luis Arraez get days off and in for them are Alex Avila, who will catch while Garver plays 1B, and Marwin Gonzalez. 3. With the rotation on short rest as well, tomorrow's game could be a bullpen day depending on how Maeda's start goes. Smeltzer, who has already started a game this year, would be in line for the start tomorrow if Jhoulys Chacin is not ready.

Miss the game? https://www.twitch.tv/videos/597899411 Want to skip the pre-game? Go to time-stamp 29:48Post-Game Wrap The Twins began series #2 of the longest homestand of the year yesterday after taking series #1 two games to one over Detroit and looked to get off to a hot start last night. On the mound for Minnesota was one of the biggest surprises out of the Twins rotation thus far in Homer Bailey. Bailey started the year out of the pen but after being moved to the rotation he's been fantastic, with the lowest ERA out of the rotation and the 4th lowest ERA in the American League, 1.61. On the mound for Seattle was Justus Sheffield, a starter the Twins did not see back in their series earlier this year, and he would find himself in a lot of jams early and as we've seen with the Twins all year, they would take themselves out of innings frequently in this one. https://clips.twitch.tv/AbstemiousStylishWaffleCoolCatBailey was matching Sheffield blow for blow and on a cold night at Target Field, both teams bats were slow to get going, but the scoring started with the Twins and Jorge Polanco. https://www.twitch.tv/thuuuuney/clip/BrainyFaithfulCrabsStrawBearyThe M's would eventually tie up the ballgame with a home run and a crooked number in the 5th, all capped off with a tough play from Josh Donaldson. https://clips.twitch.tv/FancySwissDillAllenHuhuSo Bailey would end his day after five and the game was turned over to the bullpen and I mentioned in the pre-game, outside of the trio Duffey,Romo, and May, they've been brutal to start off the year with a 7.04ERA. So the man coming out of the pen was Fernando Romero, who began the year in AAA, and came up to hopefully help the Twins spell the tail end of the pen. Romero would answer our pre-game call in a huge way and through three innings out of the pen, Romero held the M's scoreless and kept the Twins in the game. So we headed to the home half of the 8th with the former Mariner Nelson Cruz trying to get Romero the win. https://clips.twitch.tv/DignifiedArtisticSnailTwitchRPGThe Twins tie it, but don't take the lead and in his best Jack Morris impression, Romero tells Rocco he's going back out for the 9th. Romero would go on to set the M's down in order and bring the Twins to the 9th, as they looked to walk it off and get Romero the win. A lead off double by Eddie Rosario made the inning look promising, but it was followed up with a popout and a punch out and the Twins were down to their last chance before extras with Byron Buxton coming to the plate. The only walk-off this year for Minnesota was courtesy of a 2-run shot by Eddie Rosario and with a 1-0 count to Byron Buxton....the pitch... https://www.twitch.tv/thuuuuney/clip/ObliviousDistinctYogurtPartyTimeWALK OFF BOMBA #2 AND THE TWINS TAKE GAME ONE 5-3! Catch-up The Twins win the opening series of the home-stand but don't get the sweep as the former Twins Cj Cron and Jonathan Schoop rally in the 9th to win a thriller 9-8 for Detroit. But today the lineup card turns over to the Seattle Mariners as the Twins will begin a four game set and look to blaze it up and sweep Seattle for the second time this year. Trevor May, Tyler Duffey, and Sergio Romo have been fantastic out of the pen thus far, totaling a 1.80ERA combined in 30IP out of the pen so far. But the other half of the pen has been abismal to say the least, posting a 7.04ERA in 55IP. The Twins have lost a great deal of games early due to collapse from the pen so with the bats becoming more consistent, Wes Johnson needs his bullpen to do the same. 2. The Twins swept Seattle earlier this year and now will begin a four game series after this first home series win this year. Toting the rubber for Minnesota is the veteran Homer Bailey, currently 4th in the AL in ERA. 3. With Cleveland staying red hot, the Twins will look to keep pace and lower their games back to 3.5 today with the possible win.

Miss the game? https://www.twitch.tv/videos/596737531 Want to skip the pre-game? Go to 24:48.Post Game Wrap So the Twins take the first two games of the series looking to go for sweep #2 and go above .500 at home for the first time this year (4-4 entering contest). But as we say in yesterday's contest even though the Tigers lost, Detroit wanted this game badly...and now for the highlights from what I think was the best game of the year thus far. We begin in the top of the 1st where the Twins, sending out Jake Odorizzi, are looking for a clean start to the ballgame. After the leadoff man Cameron Maybin singles to right, the former Twin Niko Goodrum opens the scoring for Detroit in the 1st. https://clips.twitch.tv/CulturedObservantTeaSmoocherZThe Tigers would add one more and early, they lead the Twins 3-0 heading into the home half of the 4th. Well we talked about yesterday how that ballgame could've been a spark for Minnesota offensively, it certainly was for Miguel Sano. https://clips.twitch.tv/SmoothFrailDragonfruitFeelsBadManSo Sano ties it for the Twins but the runs wouldn't stop there. After a single and a walk the Twins had ducks on the pond with nobody out and they get a run, but Cameron Maybin makes arguably the best play defensively we've seen this year, to limit the damage. https://clips.twitch.tv/MuddySullenGorillaCoolCatDonaldson would later hit an RBI single to score the runner at third and the Twins open it up to a 5-3 but the damage didn't stop there, enter the Boomstick. https://clips.twitch.tv/SarcasticRefinedStarlingChefFrankSo we would later spend the next two innings discussing in chat who had the longest home run in Target Field history, only to find out it was Nelson Cruz but as a Mariner- but his shot as a Twin went 444ft and nearly left the stadium like Giancarlo Stanton did in the 2014 HR Derby. So the Twins move out to a comfortable lead at 7-3 and then Christian Stewart answers in the top half of the inning to make it 7-4 and we mentioned, these Tigers aren't going down easy. But then some beautiful happened, the Twins answer the Tigers run in the bottom half with a bomba from Byron Buxton. https://clips.twitch.tv/FancyImpossibleGooseKevinTurtleSo the Twins up 8-4 are in good position to win this game and go for their second sweep of the year but with two outs in the 8th inning, the former Twin Cj Cron singles and there are runners and 1st and 2nd, for former Twin Jonathan Schoop. https://clips.twitch.tv/BusyHungryBeefSquadGoalsSo Detroit, after going 0-6 last week, were not looking to start this week off on the losing end and we head to the 9th all tied up at 8 a piece. And in the 9th inning Tyler Clippard gets the first two outs without a blemish, but then former Twin Cj Cron doubles and with the go-ahead run at the plate, the 1-0 offering to the former Twin Jonathan Schoop... https://clips.twitch.tv/ExcitedSneakyTildeHeyGirlThats our ballgame would end as Jimenez gets the save and the Twins win the series but the Tigers take getaway day thanks the effort of former Twins Niko Goodrum, Cj Cron, and Jonathan Schoop. Favorite Twin period is tough but I think I'd go with Johan Santana.I know we didn't underappreciate him, but Jason Kubel did not get the recognition nationally that he deserved in his time here.Favorite current Twin with a bullet is Eddie Rosario. I really hope we don't lose him.6.) Favorite non-Twins Daily site/authors? Probably Lavelle or Aaron Gleeman. 7.) Favorite Twitter follows? Bomba Tracker - 2020: 30 - 2019 through 21 games: 37 Storylines 1. After a pitchers duel in game one of the series, both offenses combined for 6 home-runs yesterday in a crazy 7-6 win by Minnesota. The scorecard should be a little easier to score today as the ace of the rotation for Detroit in Matthew Boyd takes the mound versus Jake Odorizzi. 2. The Twins against LHP have been very hit or miss, starting the year 3-0 off of a LHP starter averaging over 6 runs a game. But in their last two games against LHP they have been bested by the veteran Gio Gonzalez (7 shutout innings in Chicago) and Ryan Borucki (7 shutout innings in Toronto) . Today will prove to be a big test for the Bomba Squad as they square off against Matthew Boyd. 3. The Twins haven't had a sweep since the end of March when they swept Seattle and today are looking to get the brooms out for sweep #2, also hosting Seattle again for a four game set starting tomorrow. While Detroit gets over their toughest week of the year so far going 0-7, the calendar turns over and for Detroit, they hope the week starts off with a win!

Miss the game? https://www.twitch.tv/videos/595754850 Want to skip the pre-game? Go to 24:53.Post Game Wrap For the past week or so the Twins have been in some very tight, low scoring affairs. They took game one of the series in similar fashion on the back of an excellent performance by Jhoulys Chacin,(8.1IP shutout ball), but todays game would be a different animal entirely. The Twins opened the scoring yesterday with a bomba from Max Kepler, and today they opened the scoring as well, this time courtesy of their newly acquired third-baseman Josh Donaldson. https://clips.twitch.tv/WrongRenownedPlumberStinkyCheeseBut unlike yesterday's contest, the Tigers ate their Wheaties this morning and were poised to tie the series up. After a two out walk and a broken bat single, Austin Romine would come to plate with two men on and two out looking to answer... Narrator: He did. https://clips.twitch.tv/BrainyTubularRavenNinjaGrumpyBut then, something beautiful happened. We mentioned that since April 1st the Twins had been in limbo, constantly taking themselves out of rallies and having a tough time establishing consistency- that changed today. The Twins would quickly answer and tie the game back up 3-3 and then Alex Avila would enter and pop his Bomba "cherry" in style. https://clips.twitch.tv/FrailEndearingOxBatChestThe Twins wouldn't stop there ramping up seven runs and fourteen hits as a club and the icing on the cake was courtesy of Sano's second straight day with a Bomba. https://clips.twitch.tv/SpookyManlyPangolinNotLikeThisI know what you're thinking, all in a days work for the Bomba Squad!.....right? Well I mentioned earlier Detroit ate their Wheaties and one man in particular had a day. In Miguel Cabrera's career against Minnesota he's notched 42 home runs and 143 RBI's in 192 games coming into the game and on his 37th birthday today, he would add two more home runs and 3 RBI's. https://clips.twitch.tv/TallManlyWolverinePeoplesChamp Birthday Bomb #1https://clips.twitch.tv/BrainyAltruisticBearGingerPower Birthday Bomb #2So like we've seen all year, this one was going down to the wire. The Twins would tightrope it to the 9th inning and send out Taylor Rodgers to try and shut the door. Rodgers coming into the game had 5 saves and 3 blown saves early in April so it was not a sure thing, but based off of his last appearance where he went three scoreless to get the win in Chicago, the Twins were confident. Rodgers would punch out the first two batters and on batter number three...a deep drive to center... https://www.twitch.tv/videos/596103246Final Minnesota 7Detroit 6Box Score Detroit Maybin, CF: 2-5, R Goodrum, SS: 1-5 1B Cabrera, DH: 2-5, 2 HR,3 RBI Cron 1B: 1-3, BB Schoop 2B: 2-4, R Castro 3B: 0-4, 2 K's Stewart RF: 1-3 R Romine C: 2-4 3-Run HR Reyes LF: 0-4Demerittie, PR for Stewart in 7th. But today he'll make his second appearance in front of the Twins faithful looking to bounceback after his rough first start, (0.2IP, 6R, 4BB) and win the series. 2. It's early, but Harold Castro has been lighting the world on fire here early in April. 3rd in Batting Average and 4th in Hits, the best bat in the Tigers lineup graces the lineup again today after getting a day off yesterday. 3. The Twins are currently 6-8 this April and haven't had a winning streak since their five gamer back in March 28th-April 1st. So the Twins look to build some consistency while Detroit looks to end their losing streak and even the score in Minnesota!

Miss the game? Full Game: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/595085994Wanna skip the pre-game? Time Stamp 24:06 Post-game wrap The Twins headed into the ballgame on a three game losing streak and needed a huge game from Jhoulys Chacin as the bullpen was still depleted from a tough road trip along with the batting order to start the homestand on a high note. The scoring would begin on behalf of the Twins thanks to Kepleroni in the bottom of the 2nd. https://clips.twitch.tv/SecretiveSwissAntelopeShadyLuluBut as we mentioned the Twins needing a big start from Chacin, the Tigers also needed a huge start from their arm in Michael Fulmer. Fulmer would find himself in tough situations all day, and he kept finding his way out of it. https://clips.twitch.tv/DreamyPolishedWitchKlappaWe would then head into the sixth inning with another pitchers duel on our hands, just as we saw in Toronto as the scorecard read 1-0 Twins. You don't have to watch the next clip but I'm pretty proud of it from up in the booth. https://clips.twitch.tv/AuspiciousAbstruseGarbageSMOrcSo with Fulmer pitching so brilliantly for Detroit, it came at a cost as he would leave after 5 innings with 104 pitches and the game was turned over to the bullpen. The pitching from Detroit would then transition from Tigers to kitties as we Let it Sano at Target Field. https://clips.twitch.tv/QuaintBashfulMangetoutTinyFaceThe Twins would touch the bullpen up for some more runs and head into the 9th with a 4-0 lead and out for the 9th, Chacin takes the mound. IMPORTANT Before I get into the post-game, today was Jackie Robinson day. I thought before today's broadcast of "Twins," baseball we should honor him. So below is the clip of my short memorial to the legacy, of Jackie Robinson. https://www.twitch.tv/videos/593285158Post-Game Report, Twins 2 Blue Jays 3. Full Game: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/593176683 Wanna skip the Pregame? Time-stamp 28:00. I realize the effort I am putting into the pre-game thread is more profound that the post game but that changes today! So we begin this third game already losing the series against Toronto, but Minnesota at the very least trying to get some momentum before heading into the longest home-stand of the year starting on Friday. The positives the Twins can carry is that their pitching has been fantastic. Over these three games the Twins staff as a whole netted the following:(25.0IP, 20H, 9R, 34 K's) but still lost all three games and our final game of the contest today. The Twins get another excellent start from Kenta Maeda, (5.0IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 10 K's, 0BB) but the Bomba Squad ends the roadtrip on a sour note getting swept by Toronto and now finally, the pitching staff get a much needed day off. In their last 10 games the Twins have scored over 4 runs only twice, while allowing 4 runs or less six times. The Bomba Squad will look to re-invigorate Target Field and begin the homestand on a high note Friday. Box Score Minnesota Batting Order Arraez, 2B. 2-4 2B Polanco, SS. 1-4, RBI 2B Cruz DH. 1-3, 2B, BB Rosario, LF. 0-3, BB Garver, C. 0-4 Kepler, RF. 2-4 2B, R Donaldson, 3B. 1-4 RBI 1B Sano, 1B. 1-3 1B Buxton, CF. 0-3 2 SO* Jake Cave entered as PR for Cruz in 7th. Minnesota Pitching Staff Maeda: 5IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 10 K'sSmeltzer (H,3): 0.1IP, 1H, 1BBDobnak (BS,1): 0.2IPClippard (L, 1-1): 0.1IP, 2H, 2ER, 1KDuffey (BS, 1): 0.2IP, 1H, 1KMay: 1.0IP, 2K's

Catch-up The broadcaster may have jinxed the team asking for a big game offensively as the Twins muster two hits and lose 3-2 on a walk off single by Bo Bichette. With an off-day Thursday, the Twins will turn to their hottest starter in Kenta Maeda, (28 K's in 15.1IP), to try and win the final game of the series before starting their longest homestand of the year Friday. Bomba Tracker - 2020: 25 - 2019 through 17 games: 34 Storylines 1. It's Jackie Robinson Day around Major League Baseball and as you'll see during the game all the players will be wearing the only number retired throughout baseball, #42. 2. Toronto's starting pitching this series has been unbelievable, 14IP, 2R, 23K's, and will turn to Matt Shoemaker today going for the sweep. 3. After a superb outing yesterday despite the loss, Homer Bailey gets a much deserved day off and the Twins will go from their pitcher 2nd on the team in K's, Homer Bailey, to Kenta Maeda today. Maeda trying to continue his fantastic month of April where he has only allowed 2R in 15.1IP.
