  1. Yeah. Sitting Sano for a few days tells not just him but everyone on the team that they are accountable for their performance.
  2. More of a general TD tone than you specifically I guess I just question the efficacy of those reports because it's so hard to understand what is really happening. The Twins are a young team and there are going to be hiccups as guys get used to performing every day on the big stage. Torii Hunter* struggled out of the box, Carlos Gomez was called a headcase**, Trevor Plouffe struggled for years - it's time we give the young guys a chance to play, sit them down when they make mistakes and keep the negativity down. Sano is fun to watch and for all the boneheaded moments, he has amazing moments that I choose to focus on. ** Carlos Gomes is still called a headcase but you get my point
  3. I don't see how they have lifetime jobs. The ownership just had to put out a press release saying that Molitor would be back in 2017 and no one has guaranteed Bruno anything. Both of those guys will be on thin ice with a new GM in 2017 and will need to show results.
  4. Ricky is gone. TR is gone. The Twins are winning. We need someone else to kick around.
  5. Or it could just be that the coaching staff thought he was pressing too hard and instructed him to skip batting practice because he needed a day off. It's pretty common for coaches to tell guys to take a day off and chill in baseball. This seems like people looking around for something to get complain about because the Twins are actually playing good ball and there's no more Ricky to kick around anymore.
  6. To be fair, Eduardo Nunez is leading the entire American League in stolen bases (even though he is in the NL now) and is 4th in the majors. So I don't think it's fair to say something isn't right because Nunez is leading the Twins in stolen bases. He would be leading every team but the Pirates, Brewers and Reds in stolen bases.
  7. The Twins are fully capable of being a competitive team next year, especially since in baseball, competitive is playing .500 ball until late August. They're not likely to make the playoffs and if they did somehow, they're not winning it all but it seems overly negative to think they can't play .500+ ball. Their rotation is not going to be a strength yet but its not crazy to think Berrios/Santana/Santiago/Gibson/5th starter could be average while the development of Rosario/Buxton/Kepler/Sano etc. make hitting a real strength. Bullpen performance is entirely variable and the Twins have a lot of young guys to throw at the wall and watch them coalesce into an above average pen. Would I bet money on the Twins competing next year? Probably not, I have a mortgage that needs paying. But I don't think I'd be scoffing at people who have a concept the Twins might be competitive next year. That team will likely be better than the competitive 2015 team and could very well achieve the same things they did. * I too am against signing Ramos but only because signing free agent catchers to long term deals is even more likely to fail than signing relievers to long term deals.
  8. Tentatively agree with this. I think next year Murphy should be the starter and if Garver looks so ready for the majors that you're going to get him PT other places, he should be the backup. More likely, Centeno is your backup and Garver gets to play every day in AAA to see if he's ready. Centeno is a fine backup catcher and Murphy should get another unequivocal shot at it. You can always make Centeno a below-average starter if Murphy/Garver are awful or trade for a Suzuki type on a bad team.
  9. Very much against option A. If you go back over the past five years and look at all of the 3+ year contracts for free agent catchers, they are an abomination. Russel Martin at 5 for $82 looks terrible now, the Phillies can’t get rid of Ruiz in the last year of his deal and Saltalamacchia has been awful. The best of the bunch might be Brian McCann, who gave the Yankees a few good years but now will be sent through waivers unclaimed because that contract is awful. Point is, free agent catchers are the worst. The Twins should be using their money to sign Buxton/Kepler/Berrios/Sano etc., not throwing it into the money pit that is a marquee free agent catcher. I don’t want to use more of our capital on catchers at this point. Next year should be Garver/Murphy/Centeno. You’ve got competence with Centeno and both Murphy and Garver have some upside offensively. If next year sucks you can always trade for the Suzuki/Pierzynski type if you’re somehow in it at the break and if not, you at least know where you need to invest for 2018. Would love to draft Schwarz but the Twins were never a bottom two or three team. Not good but not that bad. They’re going to play .500 ball the rest of the way and end up drafting too far down to get Schwarz unless some injury make shim drop. That’s too bad because he would have been nice.
  10. We also kept throwing him out there because lots of other guys sucked. It's not like Milone/Hughes/Gibson ran away with jobs or May made a compelling case for the rotation. They were able to move him so I guess it worked out? Ugh. My bigger question is what would Ricky Nolasco have to do next year for you to want that extra year to kick in? Would a 3.00 ERA do it? Huge spike in K rate? Does it take legitimate Cy Young votes to make you forget his past?
  11. And that doesn't even include the fact that teams can just not pitch him this year and/or next year to make sure he doesn't make it to 400 IP. Or the fact that he's been oft-injured the past few years.
  12. You forgot about last year?
  13. They in no way took a spot away from a vet in 2018, if anything they increased the chance a vet will get a spot. Ricky was done after 2017, there was no way the twins were going to bring Him back. His player option needed 400 innings in 2016 and 2017 - he currently has 124. The twins had every ability to stop that option year so no way Ricky is back 2018. Santiago will be a free agent but if he has a good year next year, the twins may just double down with a four year deal. Santiago is your threat to block gonsalves/jay/Stewart/Jorge.
  14. Meyer want going to get much of a shot with anyone unless he performed, which he never really did. He may turn out to be a total bust but I just wish the twins had given him more leash because of all the tools. He's a heavy price to pay. Can you move Santiago at the deadline next year? He's a league average pitcher at best with a FIP over 5. It seems like we had tommy milone fitting that description and couldn't give him away. I love the optimism that the twins will give up on Santiago. Can't see it being reality but love the optimism.
  15. But what incentive does Atlanta have to do that? They won't want want the salary if the Pohldads go cheapo and let the braves have him so they can "play the young guys". It wouldn't be until a team with playoff hopes like the Tigers is up that you have incentive. And I'm not sure how worried those teams might be about Kurt Suzuki, he's not going to set the world on fire. No reason to waive him, no one is arguing for that. Down the stretch you'll likely see more Murphy and content with suzuki being more of the backup.
  16. Suzuki won't pass through but that doesn't mean he can't be traded. I'm no expert but if a team claims him, the twins can negotiate with them. No crappy team is going to take Suzuki so if a contender makes a claim, the Twins can go to work. Issue is that the Indians make the most sense and the Royals or Tiggers might have reason to make a claim to block them. Maybe they won't though since they might be afraid the Twins might just let Suzuki go on a claim and not have to pay him or worry in any small way about the vesting option?
  17. Yeah but the July upgrades are often for the impact players while August is about aging vets and small pieces. As the Twins had no real impact players, I'm excited for August. Kintzler seems like the kind of guy who can move in August, Suzuki too.
  18. Meh. I'm not a big fan of Santiago or this deal. You basically upgraded from Nolasco to Santiago and paid Alex Meyer to do it (the Twins also save maybe $2 million next year and get a lottery ticket reliever but those are small potatoes). I'm not sure that's the best path. if you just released Ricky or moved him to a long relief role going forward, you'd open up a rotation spot for a guy who might have a chance to be there long-term (Wheeler? Dean?) and end up spending about the same amount of money. And you'd still have Meyer - he hasn't been great but he still has a ton of potential out of the pen or in the rotation. As is, the Twins traded Meyer for the ability to upgrade from a crappy starter you could just not play to a league average starter who blocks guys who might be there long-term. This is a pretty lateral move in my mind.
  19. If they sign Trump I'm cheering for the Blue Jays.
  20. We have to remember there is always still August for guys like Plouffe, Kintzler, Santana etc. I love that MLB has a trade deadline that is kind of a deadline but not really.
  21. If they want to win now they can get a lot more than a 4th/5th OF, a backup catcher and a LH reliever.
  22. They would tell you to leave it.
  23. But you're not just getting him on waivers, you're going to have to give up real value to get him. That's the difference. 29 teams would add Puig for a pittance but that's why he won't be a pittance. And if you're the Twins, is this where you want to expend capital? The Twins are not the team with the long leash. They have other good options and are a young developing team that isn't going to easily curb Puig. You need a team with a clear OF need and/or a strong veteran club. The White Sox fit both since they have respected veterans and a clear need in the OF. A team like the Braves might make sense from a need perspective. The Twins just aren't a good fit as long as the price isn't something ridiculous like Suzuki+Grossman+Palka. Which it won't be, Puig is too young with too much talent to go for a crappy package.
  24. I mean, Grossman for Puig? Heck yeah. That's just not going to happen. We should flip Centeno for Trout while we're at it! Rosario could be involved in a Puig trade but if I'm trading Rosario, I'd rather let him build value over the last part of the year and then trade him for pitching in the offseason. Rosario isn't going to be anything more than a throw-in for a Puig trade right now but a strong second half could change his value. Can't sell low on him (though it may be time to sell soon).
  25. Yeah. I edited that a bit while you posted so may be worth re-looking at. Also see a response to Mike Sixel. I'm just not sure he would play every day. He would likely start with the job due to talent but the Twins have good inside options with Rosario and Grossman. Maybe that competition would push Puig to give his best but the same thing never did the trick in L.A. And then you have the headache of Puig complaining on the bench and you have trouble even giving him away. I think it's a moo point because there's no way that Dave W's trade valuation is even close to fair. As you have pointed out, he's got so much talent and the LA situation has been so bad that the Dodgers could get something real for him. That actually pushes my point a bit - I love Puig for nothing because I'm not an idiot but I'm not sure the Twins should be using prospects to go fill one of the few organizational strengths.
