  1. His arm is an issue but even in RF, it's probably outweighed 6 or 7 times over by his range. A Span trade wouldn't surprise me as a way to open up center for Revere, where he could have the most impact.
  2. Edwin Jackson is another free agent, as are aging Ryan Dempster and Huroki Kuroda. Not only is it a huge free agent class, but clubs in general are less pitching-starved than has been the case in a long time. Everyone could still use more, but a lot of teams will think twice about paying big money to 2nd-tier or below guys. I think the Twins should just plan on making the qualifying offer (or whatever it's called) to Liriano and going from there. A one-year deal would be a nice gamble, and if he walks instead they get draft compensation.
  3. Maybe the Twins just have a newfound spirit of generosity? I mean, what would Buxton have done if they said $5.5 million was the highest they'd go? Walk away? I don't think so. Given the $100,000 allowance for picks after the 10th round, they still could sign a guy or two for $250,000 or something. Clearly nothing big though.
  4. The cap shouldn't be an issue, since they will save at least a decent amount with the Buxton slot and are allowed to go 5% over without penalty (around $600,000). Mazzilli can't make any more money by going back to college, since seniors have minimal leverage; plus, he was passed over so many times in a weak draft- how different will it be next year? But maybe he is enjoying his time at UConn enough to make up for it.
  5. Well he was committed to Coastal Carolina, which has a very strong baseball program and a large population of, um, party-oriented women. Given that he wasn't taken until the 16th round I had no idea what the odds were. But presumably the Twins knew he wanted to go pro.
  6. $6.2 million is not the recommended or "slot" bonus for the 2nd pick. It is the maximum amount allowed without using up the cap room assigned to other picks. Most reports get that point wrong. I seriously doubt Buxton will get the maximum. I'd be very surprised if he got much more than $5 million. So far as the rapidity of signings, some teams are probably more cavalier with respect to pre-draft negotiations (which are against the rules).
  7. I think BA and ESPN are quite credible in this area. While Law goes a bit more with his opinions, BA basically represents the industry consensus- which is the most objective way of doing it. Among the clubs, opinions undoubtedly vary quite a bit. Every team will have some guys they like more than the consensus, and others they like less. It makes sense that teams will often end up drafting those players they like more than the other clubs- that's why the player is available to begin with. Ultimately the results are what matter. In that department, the Twins aren't doing too well recently. It's not because they deviated from the consensus rankings though, since their high-profile busts were drafted in line with expectations. They've just chosen poorly.
  8. Considering the fact Span's signed through 2014 (plus a '15 option), I don't see any point in trading him for a mediocre return. They could always do that later. If no one wants to pay a high price, then he can just remain with the Twins. The organization won't be rebuilt with a few C+ prospects here and there.
  9. I was surprised that Deron Johnson favorably compared Melotakis' delivery to Terry Mulholland. I assumed they would try to change Melotakis' delivery-- he will never be a hard-throwing starting pitcher the way he works now. My guess is that they have no long-term starting plans for any of the college guys other than Bard.
  10. The Twins will spend well below their cap. That is a complete non-issue at this point.
  11. The college guys they are taking at this point are basically organizational players, not really prospects. They can take a thousand, it doesn't really matter... they are just there to fill out rotations.
  12. I'm not a scout, but other teams thought prep pitchers were worth taking. Some highly ranked ones were available at #42 including Smoral and Weickel. In the 2nd round they passed on strong-armed guys like Brown, Underwood, and DeJong. Maybe those guys stink but other teams- who have drafted better than the Twins in recent years - apparently don't think so. It seems the more logical conclusion is that the Twins have a bad strategy.
  13. Extra talent doesn't mean only top-notch guys. I was referring to their number of picks and ability to add depth. Take a bunch of prep pitchers with good arms and let the minor league staff work with them. Isn't that what the scouts are for, and the developmental personnel are for? A couple relief prospects don't make any difference when an organization has so much ground to make up.
  14. The thing is that the Twins are very well positioned this year to add some extra talent due to their high cap number. It's basically a one-time opportunity and so far it looks like they won't take advantage of it. It would really be a disgrace if they left significant money on the table, given the needs of the farm system.
  15. Except other teams are taking high school pitchers. Will they mostly fail to sign them?
  16. Nope. Chargois has a wacky delivery that won't work as a starter. Duffey doesn't throw hard but is more well-rounded, so in theory they could give starting a try. He would likely have below-average velocity in that role.
  17. It's not like teams haven't tried before, Twins included. There is a reason those guys are relievers. At least with a high school player there is more upside remaining. This is just a fail strategy that does nothing to address the needs of the system.
  18. If a player's college team doesn't like him as a starter, doesn't that indicate something? Ga. Tech maybe is one thing, but Northwestern State? What's next, a guy who wasn't good enough to start for his high school? The advantage to college players is theoretically that they are less risky and closer to the Bigs. But taking on projects adds risk and development time.
  19. None of the college pitchers have particularly great strikeout rates. All around one per inning, which is good but not great for a pro prospect. Melotakis' is a little higher but against mediocre competition, and of course all of them mostly worked in relief.
  20. It's not about rankings. The Twins have a desperate need for starting pitcher prospects and they are taking college relievers. It is unbelievably stupid. The organization is a joke.
  21. He had zero homers so I don't think his future is at first base. According the ESPN his future is as a solid reliever for a couple years, until he blows out his arm as a result of his delivery. Just what the Twins need.
  22. Well, I guess they will keep drafting relievers. After all, Northwestern State pitchers with a 3.63 ERA out of the bullpen do typically develop into MLB mid-rotation starters.
  23. Virant might fall due to signability concerns; I seriously doubt the Twins would draft him. The college starter crop is very weak, so that's probably not an option with the second round picks unless they keep drafting relievers to convert (which would be an unbelievably idiotic thing to do).
  24. There's no such thing as a "down cycle." Some teams choose to rebuild- the Twins amped up spending and collapsed anyway. That's just making poor decisions and having it catch up to them. No one forced them to make bad decisions.
  25. Buxton will not get the slot max. It's just a question of how much less. My guess would be a little over $5 million.
