  1. That seems like the perfect role for him, capitalizing on his strengths in keeping the players together during the 162 game grind and negating the 'buck stops here' components of managing... strategy and the won/loss record. Hope he excels at his new job and helps the Diamondbacks franchise realize its considerable potential. Just be careful when you grab that car door handle after it's been in the summer Phoenix sun all afternoon, Ron. And have some fun out there! This game's fun, OK? Fun, G.d. it!
  2. Whoa, whoa, whoa. That sounded workable until the crazy talk about giving away a history-making hitter like Santana.
  3. Chuck Heston getting his "DAMN YOU!!!" on. Probably more recognizable in the wide reveal shot that follows... No? Anagram clue: "Athlete Popes fan!" (film at 11). Ok, backward... 'sepA eht fo tenalP'. And it's not 'Fleas patent hope'. Ok, that's my quota of .gifs and pop culture for the week.
  4. Just when I was making a little preemptive progress toward my impending New Year's resolution to go with pop culture references less often...
  5. It's a good thing it happened at a gas station, so that in addition to the witnesses there are security camera videos on which the criminals' license plate and faces are almost certainly visible during the commission of multiple felonies. Looking forward to the news story about the apprehension of the perpetrators.
  6. Wisconsin in the Trump column. Off tomorrow but this is way past my bedtime even though it's not a 'school night'. Time to hang it up. One last .jpg to put a bow on the night...
  7. But she's so cute when she's feisty! She reminds me of the fiery little elementary principal in Kindergarten Cop! Seriously, though, you're probably right about her from a purely political strategy perspective. And we're probably in for some more SC fights that will make the nation wish we could replace the current lifetime term/executive nomination system that's about as fair as your two siblings calling the window seats for the entire car trip to Yellowstone and back.
  8. For me this election died at the conventions. It was like the opposite of this year's World Series. Instead of knowing I'd be happy with either outcome...
  9. Don't make me get out the guitar... http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_3IeiEVLGD9s/SirXrPE4s4I/AAAAAAAAADw/aOWHQgXL_YE/s400/yes-man-guzman-carrey.jpg
  10. I'm picturing you and a business partner working as freelance trappers of American illegals in the workplace... http://v015o.popscreen.com/eGVpbzd3MTI=_o_kids-in-the-hall-trapper.jpg
  11. Buck up, Barky. 1. It's not over. 2. However much you may dislike Pence, he's a competent manager and sane human being. He's going to eventually end up acting as the real president when Trump loses interest, except for State of the Union addresses and visits by Super Bowl winners. 3. Trump's hands are probably to small to press any of the really dangerous buttons in the Oval Office.
  12. My humor playing? That would be a first. Are they using N2O over there tonight?
  13. Totally kidding. I've been to the Boundary Waters enough to know that two thirds of the people there are filthy hippies and geefed up teachers who vote exclusively Democrat/Green. Aaaand I'm kidding again. It's helping me take some of the edge off a distinctly unpleasant evening. I'll try to behave.
  14. Pfft. Don't bother. Do you really think liberals can find their way through the woods or paddle a canoe. Think, man, think! Work on the bomb shelter instead! Sorry, couldn't resist.
  15. Well, that would ensure that the election isn't really OVER over tonight, just that the balloting stops and the 'rigged system' rhetoric reaches an unbearable volume.
  16. If this was the final election in which rural and Rust Belt Americans end up playing a pivotal role, then they picked a strange candidate for their last hurrah, perhaps to their eventual buyer's remorse. And while i completely agree that the demographics favor the Democratic party in the future, I'm not entirely sure that Democrats fully appreciate the long term negative effects on America brought about by the alienation of rural and Rust Belt Americans and the erosion of their place in our nation. In any case, the nation has survived clunker presidents before, and it can again if we put in the work.
  17. I trust that you're familiar with the difference between a majority and a plurality, yes? Not that it should matter, but I didn't vote for either of these two knuckleheads. I'm one of the idiots who went to the trouble of voting but threw away my presidential vote on a third party candidate.
  18. Hillary +18 in NH with 79% of the votes in. Not 18%, 18 votes. Good lord, this election is going to come down to a recount of one tiny New Hampshire village's votes, and these guys will turn out to be the election judges.
  19. My guess is that some younger career behind-the-scenes politicos and money people in both camps have both been looking at this election as a pyrrhic victory at best. The unfavorable/untrustworthy ratings of the candidates and the likely congressional gridlock and uncertain national mood guarantees neither candidate will enter office with a national mandate. And other than the Supreme Court, there are few issues that break along traditionally partisan lines and present opportunities for shovel-ready change by executive actions of a new president But worse, both candidates have large potential downside as president. Trump's potentially terrible liabilities have been exposed at length, and he's no friend to many Republicans in Congress anyway. But Hillary as president is also a potential albatross for her party, but without her party having an escape hatch of dismissing her as an outsider and aberration like Trump can be.
  20. Fair enough. My guess is that given Illinois' history, its laws hindering third parties were maybe the consolation prize won while trying to legislate the Republican party out of existence in the state as well. Ok, I'm joking, but not by much. Anyway, I've only ever lived in two states long enough to vote in their elections, but I've seen elections in enough different ones to have seen some relevant state and local independents. But I'll go back and read your description of Illinois and its obstacle course for 3rd parties, and contemplate some more.
  21. Agreed, and I was thinking about editing my post to reflect that. And perhaps he was a third party candidate in the most relevant way, which was that the Republican party's power brokers saw him as an outsider and a threat. Trump ahead by 7,700 in Pennsylvania and projected to win Iowa by CNN. Wolf Blitzer is entirely professional 99% of the time tonight, but on a couple of swing state calls for Trump, you can tell that he's just millimeters from losing his sh*t on live, worldwide television. What a crazy night.
  22. Agreed, but at the local level and, outside of big bruisers like CA and NY, the state level, you can do more with less money, and with less outside interference. And Sanders was always an opposition-oriented far left voice in Congress. A centrist independent with a track record of success as governor in a populous state would have an easier time making national inroads than a fringe-y independent like Sanders. You're right, though, about either party's built in immune system making it hard for any outsider to get a fair shake.
  23. It's utterly fascinating to me that in an election with what is probably the highest combined unfavorable rating between the two major candidates since the stat has been polled, no independent candidate has managed to even consistently affect the outcome state-by-state tonight, let alone mount a serious challenge nationally. If memory serves it was maybe Chi who correctly noted that independent candidates want to play on the national stage without doing their homework first, by way of building an infrastructure and winning elections at the local and state level first. If they get started with that to-do list now, maybe one of them will have a viable presidential candidate ready in the unlikely event that both parties drop the ball this hard again in my lifetime.
  24. Don't forget On The Beach. Damned vacuum tubes!
