  1. “José Berríos set a career high and led the Minnesota Twins with 195 strikeouts in 2019. ZiPS projects Berríos to have another strikeout-filled year in 2020 with 193 punch outs. While ZiPS is projecting his ERA to balloon to a 4.17 next year, if he can put up 193 strikeouts next year, he has Cy Young potential heading into the 2020 season.“ If Berrios is top 5 in cy young voting this team will have a good shot of winning it all. That would mean he is becoming a true ace. I’m not sure he has it in him. But I’m rooting for him
  2. Add him to the list of guys competing for the No 4/5 starter or opener slots. Let’s use our best guys. Our hottest guys. If they flame out or get injured it’s the next guy up. That’s the beauty of depth.
  3. I will go with 267. More than enough power to win games. Maybe we can set the ML record for doubles or extra base hits in a season.
  4. Romero had a 4.58 ERA in his first dozen ML starts back in 2018. He went toe to toe with Ohtani. He did struggle his last couple turns and got demoted. Yes last year was disappointing but he’s still got stuff. If he can regain his fastball command and make even a little improvement with the slider he could help the bullpen in 2020.
  5. If this bullpen lacks one thing it would be another LH setup guy. I know Clippard has the reverse splits but Rogers is the only LH. And it’s not like the Twins will have a lot of LH starters either. Might be another area to address at the trade deadline.
  6. I guess I’m a believer in versatility. And if Marwin is done playing MIF. And Donaldson is at least the starter at 3B for the next two years. Arraez seems to be a 2B or utility man. Why not use Adrianza as a SS defensive replacement? Best case Royce Lewis is the SS in 2021. And now you can start the transition for Polanco to be the regular 2B and a guy who can fill in at SS. Hopefully Lewis for a handful of years.
  7. There is certainly a way to use him as a reliever and as a starter/reliever/opener/primary in 2020. I just want the plan to include Graterol getting a chance to earn late season starts. Even to be a 3-4 inning opener. And the only way to do that is to have him pitch for multiple innings when he does appear this season. Let’s see what he can do. Why limit his opportunities if he shows he’s your best option at developing a future 1-2 SP?
  8. Eddie is a great spot. He’s still in his prime. Probably hitting 6-7-8 in a stacked lineup. If he produces his usual stats he will make even more money in 2021. But it won’t be with the Twins. Just hard to see the front office giving him a 3 or 4 year deal to keep him around with all the other possible options in the upper levels of the farm system.
  9. Defensive positioning for SS 3B and 2B all require stronger arms at times. The 3B playing the normal SS spot and the 2B playing 75 feet past the infield dirt on shifts vs LH batters is pretty standard these days. Yes the SS has to have a strong arm overall but these shifts presents new challenges for these 3 infield spots. Ideally I think Polanco fits best at 2B. And I would be fine if Adrianza (or another defensive minded SS) would get more innings at SS and transition Polanco to 2B.
  10. If Graterol is viewed as a starter by the front office he should start this year. Either beginning in AAA or if he earns a spot in the majors. He probably does need have his innings load monitored. Start with 2-3 inning outings so more of an opener or piggyback guy. If all goes well he’s up to 4-5 innings per outing by the all star break and will be able to throw 100 pitches per outing for Sept and postseason. My plan would be to try and get him to 150 innings. If injuries keep Graterol from reaching that limit they have the depth to make up for it. And they can go into next season with more knowledge of what he can handle. I just think it’s worth the risk to keep trying him as a starter knowing he has more “ace” potential than anybody currently on this 40 man roster. To pigeon hole him as a reliever at age 21 seems strange with such an obvious need in the rotation. Especially for postseason.
  11. I could see Romero in this type of role too. Just depends on how healthy the squad is in spring training. And who emerges in March.
  12. I could see Littell being an opener or a multi inning reliever. It would max his current value. A guy who COULD be a back of the rotation starter or a solid long man in the pen.
  13. For so many years the Twins have lacked pitchers with plus breaking stuff. May can spin it. So can Duffey and Rogers. Yes May and Duffey have had a tendency to hang a few but they get plenty of swings and misses. All 3 are cheap controllable assets that should anchor the pen for a few years. Hopefully we develop an arm or two that add to that depth.
  14. Dinelson Lamet Frankie Montas and Zac Gallen are guys I’m interested in acquiring. I expect Cincinnati to be better but If they start slow Luis Castillo Sony Gray and Trevor Bauer would be solid options.
  15. Watching on TV I was impressed with Perez. And I didn’t know the velo. He hit is spots with the fastball. Threw a couple good sliders. Had Realmuto waving at a change. I really don’t care what his velo is as long as he’s commanding the ball like that. He can get people out.
  16. Castro isn’t my favorite player by any means but of the 3 catchers that have any chance of making the 25 man roster Castro is by far the best defender/thrower. Sure Garver and Austidillo offer more with the bat but we’re not talking about a Mike Piazza or a Carlton Fisk behind the plate. Or even a Brian Harper for that matter. All 3 guys will get a chance. We will see how it all plays out.
  17. I don’t know who to give credit to for those 85 wins in 2017. Maybe Paul Molitor?
  18. I don’t know what to make of defensive metrics on catchers. But the year Castro was healthy the Twins won 85 games. With a pitching staff that was a little worse than this one? Maybe? I checked out on Twins baseball in September. So I didn’t see Tortuga behind the plate much. I did think Garver was average behind the dish. At least the team has 3 options for the spot. If Castro is the 100 game catcher at least the other two options would form a good platoon partner.
  19. This is my guess for opening day... SS Polanco LF Rosario DH Cruz 3B Sano LF Kepler 1B Cron 2B Schoop C Castro/Garver CF Buxton Bench - Marwin Torreyes Cave (Adrianza DL) Berrios/Gibson/Odorrizi/Pineda/Perez Reed/May/Rogers/Parker/Romero/Hildenberger/Mejia
  20. I don’t expect a 4 WAR from Marwin. But which is more likely? Marwin > 4 WAR? Or entire starting 9 > WAR than Marwin? I’m a fan of the deal because Marwin should be so valuable. He could allow the team to make other moves. Trade a Sano/Kepler/Rosario next offseason to add a pitcher. He himself could be flipped for pitching. Marwin could challenge the guys on the cusp (Gordon Rooker Kirilloff Lewis) because in some small way he is a new roadblock to playing time. He could flame out and the Twins can eat the 21M. But right now he is a valuable asset. I think most of us are optimistic about the moves in general. But we question if it’s anything more than a push toward mediocrity. Which is why the fan base is clambering for more additions. Is a 4-year guaranteed deal where you draw the line on Keuchel or Kimbrel? Or is 3 years the magic number? I think I could endorse 3 year deals for either.
  21. I will take either. Marwin with a 4 WAR. Or the starting 9 all with better WARs.
  22. Spycake I understand your points on Marwin. You feel like spending money on pitching rather than the luxury of having a good utility man. I think a lot of us agree. But you did write this... “Why? Gonzalez's projected WAR per PA is worse than each one of our current starting 9.” If the Twins have 9 hitters with a WAR higher than Marwin this will be a hell of a season for the Twins. Marwin is a proven commodity with upside of a 4+ WAR season. Something he did just two seasons ago. Baseball is being played differently now. More matchups. More using the DH to give guys a day off. I think Marwin is a perfect fit for the Twins and I would be shocked if he is not a top 5 WAR player for the Twins in 2019.
  23. Magill throws 5 pitches? Those are solid %s but small sample size for sure. He’s 29. And his career numbers aren’t inspiring. I think most of what has been laid out above is pretty accurate. I think Reed Parker Rogers and May are locks. Hildenberger will get a spot if healthy/effective in spring. I can’t see the Twins choosing Magill over Mejía. Mostly it will come down to how ready Romero is to be a key part of the pen on opening day. If they don’t plan to use him in high leverage situations I could see him opening in AAA. I really would like to see Vazquez get a shot to make the team but it will take at least 2 injuries for that to happen.
