  1. This makes the Twins better and might be good news for Astudillo. I'm of the thinking that you dont need both Gonzalez and Adrianza. With Astudillo able to play third and catcher and Marwin able to play every infield position, they make a better match together as subs than Gonzalez and Adrianza. Also Garver can back up first base and DH. That's elegant.
  2. 18/19 year olds in short season ball, tools and projections mean more than performance. 21/22 year olds in AA, established tools plus performance mean youre ready to go.
  3. Starters who consistently hit 100mph: Syndergaard ... ... ... Eovaldi Who am I missing? They don't hold up. Do you encourage him to max it out as a starter? Turn him into a closer? Take something off his max because he has good movement and get him a third pitch? He has good control, do you move him up quick in a bullpen role? It will be fascinating to see which direction they push him. This year theres nothing to lose by pitching him 125 innings between a+ and aa and see if he holds up, but the decision point is ticking faster for him than any other pitcher in the system.
  4. Also this is evidence that the Twins are leaning towards using Romero for a prominent bullpen role.
  5. For comparison Adalberto Mejia era, fip and xfip 2017: 4.50 4.65 5.03. 2018: 2.01 4.06 5.40 Plus Mejia has not been durable.
  6. Now that de Jong has been dfa'd let's replace him on the honorable mention with Zander Weil who's going to get a cup of coffee someday with somebody and may surprise as a Cron type 1st base/DH bat. Go Zander.
  7. I keep waiting for one of the 7 outfielders to be dfa'd. Twins only have 20 pitchers on their 40 man, lowest in the American League.
  8. 'Perez was league average? How on earth was last year's 6.22 ERA with 5.5 K/9 and an unsightly 1.78 WHIP profile as average? He wasn't even replacement level last year, he was worth -0.9 (according to BBREF)' Yes he was horrible last year. I was talking about 2016 and 2017. Much like Morrison and Schoop, the Twins buy at a discount hoping for a rebound. It gets old when that's your only tactic in free agency.
  9. No it doesn't move the needle but unfortunately cannot change the ownership. I've lurked for awhile and agree with you in I'm looking forward to Portland getting a team. I do think Falvine have improved the depth of options so that those aren't the fallback options but of course Keuchel is better than Perez.
  10. I dont get the doom and gloom with this minor move. Perez has performed as a league average starter. He pitched 280 innings in 2016 and 2017 at a level where Odorizzi is now and where Gonsalves and Stewart hope to be. Mejia and Romero especially have flashed more but haven't been consistently healthy. Thorpe and Graterol aren't ready. Throw in questions about Pineda's health following TJ surgery and we'll probably need Perez this year. It's one year and an option. It will come at a cost of Duffey, Magill or Granite. Granite is at best a 4th outfielder and Cave is better. Wade too I hope. How many 4th outfielders do you need? I think a lot of the negativity is due to the fact that Perez is a pitch to contact sinkerballer and no fan base is more weary of that then the twins. Hopefully Perez bounces back from a season lost to being gored by a bull and a high BABIP and saves us from back filling starts with the likes of Santiago, Gee, Turley, Jorge, Slegers et al.
  11. Granted, his 2018 season was a disaster, but his 2016 and 2017 were league average, 2 WAR, innings eater, much like Odorizzi this year. His 2016-2017 is basically Kohl Stewart's ceiling. Sinker heavy ground ball machine. Not sure how he fits on this years Twins.
  12. Best guess: they're looking for a lefty opener to use in front of a righty primary. They used Moya in that role 6 times last year. Perez is used to starting. Maybe Perez first time through the order numbers look good?
