  1. I've seen him ranked as either the Nats #2 or #3 prospect. On this surface it looks like we got really good value for Span, even if it's a pitcher that won't be ready until 2014. Although I have to wonder if he'll be put on the 40 man, start in AA and be a possibility for a September call up next year.
  2. He's definitely not a "pitch to contact" guy. Upper 90's fastball with an upper 80's slider. Let's just hope he doesn't have a history of arm problems.
  3. I have to imagine it's almost a lock that Anthony Slama gets taken in the Rule 5 draft. There has to be a team like the Royals or Astros that would be more than willing to give him a shot for an entire season.
  4. Paxton seems like the most attractive option, would they take Hicks in exchange?
  5. Mandelaro must be disappointed considering his blog comments a few weeks ago about how the Twins lack committment to winning baseball in Rochester by calling up all their top players.
  6. That Tsuyoshi Nishioka hit .298 in July and has hit .338 in the 18 games since the all star break? Is he starting to figure it out? Or is it blah, blah, blah, small sample size, blah blah, OPS, blah, blah, blah?
  7. Yep! And here's what MLB.com says.... The son of former player and manager Lee Mazzilli, L.J. swung a hot bat for UConn all season. Mazzilli makes hard, consistent contact and is able to use the whole field. He has a short, compact swing and should be able to hit for a good average at the next level. He has shown good power this spring but many believe that at best, it will be average. He has the ability to steal some bases and has shown it throughout his college career, but it will not be his best asset. Mazzilli is not the greatest defender at second but scouts believe that with some instruction he could be an average defender. Mazzilli's bat will most likely be too much for teams to pass on in the top five rounds of the Draft. We're actually getting some value in these middle rounds....
  8. Looks like he's a pretty solid starter.... Player ERA W-L APP GS CG SHO/CBO SV IP H R ER BB SO 2B 3B HR B/Avg Christian Powell. 2.69 9-4 17 16 0 0/1 0 93.2 88 43 28 29 77 16 1 8 .247
  9. And Brown goes to Cleveland.....well done Twins.
  10. Best three lines from MLB.com about pick #72..... - Scouts haven’t always been able to see him consistently enough to know what he brings to the table. - He doesn’t have tremendous command - Chargois is a bit of a wild card
  11. Should we add Deron Johnson to the list of people that need to be fired by season's end???
  12. Wow....the Twins just must not be high on Brown. We just drafted a Jim Hoey who also apparently plays first base....
  13. Could Brown fall to #72???
  14. From MLB.com... The combination of left-handedness and plus velocity will always draw interested parties. That's why this Northwestern State closer is this high on Draft boards. Melotakis has grown into the closer role over the last two years using a fastball-curve combination to finish games. He can dial the fastball up to 96 mph with good arm side tail when he keeps it down in the strike zone. His curve ball is fringy average, but it's enough to keep hitters from sitting on the heater. He commands his fastball very well and has the kind of mentality teams look for in a short reliever. Even if Melotakis doesn't have the stuff to close at the Major League level, the combination of plus fastball and command should make him an effective setup man at the very least.
  15. Hey, there's always 864-year old Jamie Moyer. He got released today too....
  16. According to MLB Trade Rumors, Jeff Francis has requested and been granted his release from the Reds organization. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/06/reds-release-jeff-francis.html Anyone think he might be worth a shot in the rotation? He's 31, and has put up solid enough numbers in AAA this year. With Pavano's shoulder issues and the enigmatic nature of Liriano, could it hurt to have Francis in the rotation? Or are we talking Jason Marquis 2.0? Discuss....
  17. With 38 spots on the 40-man, what are the chances Slama gets one of those spots? Who would potentially get the second spot? Oliveros? Burroughs?
  18. I've contended that DeVries is more suited for the bullpen than in the rotation. He's a 7th inning-guy, probably nothing more. Granted, there are also a few bullpen arms in Rochester that are more deserving of that role - Slama, Guerra, Oliveros, et al. It's been a nice little story, and I don't see any reason why he shouldn't remain on the 40-man as a reliever, while still starting in Rochester to stay "stretched out" as they say. It's hard to ignore how Hendriks has been pitching since he was sent down. Considering the direction this season is going, he probably belongs with the Twins. I'd say, let's give Hendriks one more start, and if he's at least solid, get him back in the rotation.
  19. Then quit bashing everybody else's opinion and put your money where your mouth is. Show us this data that apparently makes you feel far superior to everyone else who are just trying to have some fun talking Twins around here.
  20. From a power hitting perspective, haven't the dimensions of Target Field only affected Joe Mauer? Morneau hasn't played a full season at Target Field, so there's no way to really tell if the dimensions have really made a difference. Willingham seems to do ok with the dimensions, and Dozier managed to hit one into the upper deck so at least left field isn't an issue. And considering the dent that Thome put in the right field flag pole, the right field dimensions aren't really an issue either. Maybe certain hitters on the team just like to make excuses for their lack of production as it relates to the size of their contract.....dimensions, pine trees, wind vortexes.... Maybe a better approach would be to work on adjusting your game if you want better power numbers. Speaking of the pine trees, can't we do something with CF? Taking out the trees really took some character out of the stadium. The whole "batter's eye" argument is a load of BS. You can't tell me this doesn't have an impact on the so-called batter's eye........ https://encrypted-tbn1.google.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcS8wicmE4VA4aSCxYMnIwqpdZNM6jlQ6wKmnDiS3FA8DyDl36D_
  21. Isn't that Chapter One of "Anthony Slama's Field Guide to Effective Pitching"?
  22. Including Scott Baker, there are only 39 players on the 40-man roster.
  23. What's the status on Kyle Waldrop's rehab assignment? He hasn't pitched for Ft. Myers since May 14th. Did he have a setback, or is he working more in EST? I look to you, great Twins minor league minds!
  24. I compare him, at least statistically to Matt Guerrier. I don't know how their "stuff" compares, but their career minor league stats aren't all that different. I think he is best suited as a 7th or 8th inning guy. But correct me if I'm wrong, Guerrier did some starting at the beginning of his career....
  25. I would absolutely see what Anaheim would want for Trumbo and a Garrett Richards. To make such a trade happen, Span should definitely be part of the equation. Pavano could be offered as a back of rotation innings-eater, assuming he stays healthy. Then I'd offer at least one of our top end prospects - Benson or Hicks. Then in the off season, sign a couple of the arms discussed in the Zach Greinke discussion from the last couple days, and re-sign Ryan Doumit and suddenly you've filled quite a few holes. Still some remain of course, but I think these moves would result in an instant improvement going into next season.
