  1. Since Cole is my adopt-a-prospect, I feel obligated to contribute here. To start, I might as well self-promote..... http://twinsdaily.com/showthread.php?1003-Cole-DeVries I'm assuming that he'll be inserted into the rotation. However, as I've followed him throughout his minor league career, I contend that he projects as a middle relief pitcher in the Matt Guerrier mold. In fact, their minor league stats aren't all that different and I know Guerrier did mix in some starts earlier in his career. Needless to say, at 27, he deserves a shot for the Twins to see what they have in him, and I think down the road he'd be a good fit in the bullpen. He won't dominate by any means, but I think he could be a solid bullpen arm.
  2. I'm obliged to inform you, per the Twins twitter handle, that Cole is finally getting his shot with the Twins! https://twitter.com/#!/Twins/status/204940426594103297 This is a great story, as he is a Minnesota native and has been one of the more consistent pitchers in the organization. I still contend that he's better suited as a relief pitcher, but considering his roster spot comes at the expense of Jason Marquis, it's a reasonable assumption that he'll be inserted into the starting rotation. Coupled with the fact that his last start was over the weekend, it makes sense that his major league debut will be a start later in the week. Good luck Cole! We'll be pullin' for ya!!!
  3. As far as Diamond goes, who else can we pencil in from an internal standpoint? He could also potentially be that 5th starter holding Gibson's spot until he's ready. Especially if they are able to trade Span for a prospect who is major-league ready. Which is not a bad way to go either.
  4. While it would certainly make things interesting to go after a true ace like Grienke, I don't think it makes a lot of sense considering the state the Twins are in right now. As it stands, the Twins have basically no rotation whatsoever. Diamond has been a nice story, but he still has a lot to prove. Walters is nothing more than a stopgap, and any legitimate pitching prospects we have are facing or are currently in the process of rehabbing injuries. The fact is the Twins need to build a rotation from the ground up next season, and it looks like they might have the money to do just that. They need a rotation that can produce quality starts on a consistent basis so the offense isn't always behind the proverbial 8-ball game in and game out. That way, they ought to be able to win some of those ballgames next year that they are losing this year, thus building themselves into a contender that an ace might find attractive. I'd say the short list of free agent pitchers ought to include, in no particular order: Joe Blanton Joe Saunders Brandon McCarthy Paul Maholm (If his $6.5M club option isn't picked up) Erik Bedard Shaun Marcum (If they want to go high end) Kevin Millwood (Token old guy for the back of the rotation) Based on this list, an overhauled Twins rotation should look like this going into next season: Erik Bedard/Shaun Marcum Joe Blanton/Joe Saunders/Brandon McCarthy Kevin Millwood Scott Diamond PJ Walters/Jeff Manship/Cole DeVries (Basically a place holder until June for Kyle Gibson)
  5. Well, he does hit like a pitcher.....
  6. The timing of DFA'ing Marquis and bringing up DeVries works pretty well, considering DeVries started yesterday. And while we're at it, can we end the Jeff Gray experiment already? Butera looks like a more effective relief pitcher for God's sake. As long as we're in the business of seeing what we have in players at AAA, isn't it about time we see what we have in Slama?
  7. It's too bad there isn't a way to get the St. Paul Saints into the Midwest League, especially if they find a way to make that new downtown stadium work. Could you imagine what the attendance would look like if Miguel Sano was playing for the Saints this season? On the surface it seems like a win-win, but I imagine there would be significant roadblocks to such a concept.
  8. I would say tonight would be a great game for Mauer to have a day off. He's been struggling at the plate, and I think someone mentioned yesterday that Mauer looked to be moving a little slower than usual. My questions is whether Span is ready to play again?
  9. I don't understand why they didn't do that in the first place...
  10. C'mon man....no need for that.... We're all friends here.
  11. Well....how do you like that?!?! A 1-2-3 9th and a two game sweep....
  12. That was Guardado-esque...
  13. Geez...if they needed someone to come in and throw 7 straight balls, they could have left Liriano in.....
  14. I guess who else would you throw out there....Swarzak?
  15. I just worry he's going to sit in the dugout and think about the next inning.....And then he'll go out and press.
  16. Three sliders....double play.... He got the job done. Now....do you send him out there in the 8th? Or do you let him take this small victory and let him build on it?
  17. Frankie....Don't think, just throw.
  18. He's hit well in Rochester too.....Maybe Bruno's helped him out a little....Just sayin'
  19. Perhaps it's time for Walters to call it a day...Let's take the "quality start" and run!
  20. Walters should probably stop throwing that 4-seam fastball. Both HR's have come on that pitch.
  21. Drew must have told him it was going to be a fastball....
  22. Great AB by Hammer.... Fister can't go too much longer already being at 87 pitches.
  23. Maybe it's bi-lateral shoelace weakness....
