  1. What may be the main problem for the Twins is that in this key position in the middle of the infield, the Twins don't realize that you can't get a decent SS for less than $5-$7M (not good or great, but decent). They have a knack for drafting decent to great CF'ers, so they've had a good pipeline of those since Puckett. They can't draft a SS to save their lives, and when they get a decent one like Hardy, they trade him because he's too expensive. As much as I hate the Yankees, they invested in Jeter and built around him, and because of that they have nearly constantly been in the playoffs during his tenure. The Twins need to make SS a cornerstone position - which they never have in over 50 years of existence.
  2. It's not like this is a new problem for the Twins. The Twins have NEVER been able to scout shortstops in their over 50 year history. They have had only 2, count 'em 2, shortstops who have started in multiple seasons that they have drafted - Danny Thompson and Pat Meares. Other than Zoilo Versalles (who was acquired before the draft existed), every other starter of consequence was received in a trade. Leo Cardenas from the Reds, Roy Smalley from the Rangers, Greg Gagne and Christian Guzman from the Yankees, Jason Bartlett from the Padres, Nick Punto from the Phillies, JJ Hardy from the Brewers. Other than those guys the Twins have always had garbage placeholders - guys like Sergio Ferrer, Jackie Hernandez, Luis Gomez, Juan Castro, and Brendon Harris. They have drafted shortstops who have succeeded at other positions (i.e. Chuck Knoblauch and Michael Cuddyer, possibly Trevor Plouffe). As it stands now, Brian Dozier ranks third in number of games on the Twins list of drafted players to have played SS. It's an embarrassing record.
  3. It looks like we would have traded Dozier, Deduno, Benson, Rohlfing, De Vries, maybe Parmelee, maybe Harrison, maybe Slamma since we aren't giving up any major league chips by your lineup. My guess is we wouldn't have gotten the haul for garbage - basically worthless parts we wouldn't miss like I mentioned above.
  4. Beckmt - just a quick tidbit - Jackson did leave Boras this season which makes it possible for the Twins. However, my gut tells me that we haven't seen the free agent options that Ryan will go for. He will wait for the non-tenders and go after one or two there. Ryan's strength is finding guys on the scrap heap and picking up a bunch of them hoping they will stick. Good examples this year were Burton, Fien, Mastroiani, and Floriman. The bad options included Maloney, Gray, Thomas, Kumatsu and Marquis. Look for a bunch of minor league free agent signings - that's Ryan's MO.
  5. Dice-K not gonna happen - he's a Boras client, and Boras will ask way too much. Jackson is now looking for stability, probably a 3-year deal, and since he left the Boras agency might be signed for a reasonable contract. Villanueva wants out of Toronto and could be an interesting choice. There is concern about the number of innings he could pitch since he's mainly been a reliever. Marcum does have potential. One other guy I'd look at is Brandon McCarthy, and of course Baker on an incentive-laden contract with an option for 2014. I'd even consider Liriano back on the cheap. I would trade Span and Morneau this winter for high upside, lower level pitching prospects who might be in the rotation in 2014 or 2015. I'd sign 2 non-pitching free agents - Torii to a 2-year deal and Eric Chavez for the bench. My ideal team: Revere CF Mauer C/1B/DH Hunter RF/DH Willingham LF/DH Doumit DH/C/OF Plouffe 3B Parmelee 1B/OF Dozier 2B/SS Florimon SS Bench: Mastroianni OF; Hermann C/OF; Carroll IF; Chavez 3B/1B Starters: (Take your pick) Diamond; Baker; Gibson; Pavano; Markum; Villanueva; McCarthy; Jackson; Liriano; Hendricks; Deduno; De Vries Pen: Perkins; Burton; Deunsing; Fien; Burnett; (pick 2) - Swarzak; Waldrop; Guerra; Robertson; and Oliveros
  6. I was thinking a nice trade might be Span and Casilla to the Nats for Lombo Jr. and 2 of the following - Robbie Ray, Kylin Turnbull, and Daniel Rosenbaum. Lombo is currently starting in left field and backing up at 2B, 3B and SS. He would slot in nicely batting 2nd after Revere and starting @ 2B. Span takes his place in the OF with Casilla a utility guy. Ray, Turnbull and Rosenbaum are 3 lefty starters. They don't have huge upsides, but I believe they could slot into the rotation in the next couple of years. Turnbull would have to be a PTBNL, as he signed last August.
  7. I beieve that Florimon is on the International League All Stars - not Independent League
  8. Since we're looking to rebuild for 2014 - I figure we should suck in 2013 as well. So here's to consecutive years of #2 choice, #1 choice and #1 choice in the drafts. Maybe if we're smart we can do what The Rays and the Nats did with their long periods of picking at the top and become perennial contenders. The Twins need to start drafting #1 and ace pitchers instead of 3's, 4's and 5's. How about some decent scouting and forget about pitch to contact guys for good.
