Palacios was on track to never be anything more than a utility infielder (at best) with the Twins if all of their prospects pan out as projected. Jorge Polanco is young and entrenched at SS and there are three other SS/MI prospects in our system who project higher than him. Tampa sees something in him that most of the baseball prospect media world fail to see. I hope he succeeds there but it is no loss to the Twins

Article: The Darvish Contingency Plan
NewClearHarley replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I'm in favor of signing Cobb too - not really a fan of Lynn. Cobb and Straily coming here would give us some proven depth and I like both better than the Jaime Garcia/Jason Vargas types. No harm in finding what the AAA Marlins are asking.- 195 replies

If we are considering out of the box options to look at acquiring I'd suggest inquiring with Miami as to what it would take to lure Dan Straily and Adam Conley here.- 195 replies

the reason that TB is willing to deal Archer and/or Odorizzi is that they believe that Honeywell and Faria are ready to step in - they wouldn't be inclined to deal either of them - nor would I part with Sano for either of them. I agree with the idea of getting Span back but considering the salary relief involved that plus Kepler should fetch us Odorizzi or that plus Kepler plus one additional piece should come close to netting Archer. I doubt Twins would deal both Kepler & Romero to TB and take Span's contract - unless TB was paying almost all of it.- 195 replies

the tough part on dealing with Houston is that they don't have any real needs - unless they are concerned about Keuchel walking next offseason. Their offense is young and controllable and very good and they still have some young superstar prospects (half a decade of tanking pays off when you know how to draft). Nevertheless they are so strong at SP right now that McCullers will be their #4 - and I believe he would be our #1. We're not going to get them to deal us him, but McHugh has 8K/9 stuff but he throws a lot of pitches (sounds a lot like Darvish actually when you consider that), his contract is reasonable and he may want a chance to start rather than be forced to be a long-man.- 195 replies

I mentioned earlier that either McHugh or Peacock would be a nice get from Houston, not sure they want to risk their depth with both Keuchel & McCullers having injury problems in their recent history but either would be a solid addition to our rotation at a much cheaper price than Archer would command.- 195 replies

Here is a list of potential FA outfielders we could sign if we trade Kepler++ in a deal for Archer: First off I expect we could reduce the prospect load necessary to land Archer if we would eat Denard Span's contract - not to mention bringing him back would create good will with the fan base. other names to consider: Melky Cabrera - I don't like him but he could replace some of the lost offense Either CarGo - Go-Go particularly could also provide some reunion positivity JD-Mart - not sure we could afford him on long deal but if he'd settle for 1-25 on market-reset deal? Maybin - I love this signing because it'd give us another speed/OBP option who could hit on either end of the lineup card Seth Smith - cheap platoonable power bat, see also: Rasmus, Colby- 195 replies

Consider it from a replacement level argument - Would you rather have Odorizzi/Archer as our #1 or #2 option along with Span (or other replacement level individual - Maybin/CarGo in RF) or Kepler at RF most of the time (not likely full-time) and Gibson as our #2 option.- 195 replies

Article: The Darvish Contingency Plan
NewClearHarley replied to Cody Christie's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I got your point and know that Gibson has zero value to anyone outside this organization as anything more than a reclamation project. Odorizzi has a career 8.2 k/9 and the twins analytics team has insight to the pitching prospects from TB. In fact the team was connected to him even before last season. Is he an ace? No. Would he be a top-3 starter this season for us? Yes. With Santana out to start the season, he would probably even be our opening day starter. Would I rather have Archer? Yes, but we could do a lot worse than getting Odorizzi as part of a package. As for holding on to Kep, I'd love to keep him, but I know that he is a player that TB is interested in. If we got Archer, I'd feel better about trading him - but I'm not going to sweat a #6 hitter that struggles with LHP and who very well could be a career platoon-option. Besides in any deal to better this team, we could agree to take on Denard Span's ugly contract in lieu of dealing additional prospects. Span wouldn't be too large of a dropoff in production from Kepler next year and hopefully we could then use some of this "FA money" that we didn't throw at Darvish to sign another decent starter (Cobb/Lynn) and a potent RHB for the bench.- 195 replies

and in response TB would not accept just Kepler for Archer. Kepler has yet to prove he is more than a platoon-level OF'er at the MLB level. I think he will be, but SP is our position of need LHB RF is not.- 195 replies

I don't think Gibby would be dealt - TB wants Kepler (with their large quotient of LHB I don't know why) - for him - Kepler is the key piece.- 195 replies

I'll take Tillman or Garcia for 1-9 / 2-18 prove-it deals to be back of the rotation (roster fill in) types but not as the ace.- 195 replies

now if we could get Arrieta on 1-year 20 w/team option for 2019 and 4-60 for Cobb I'd be cool with that but nevertheless dealing for Odorizzi or Archer seem like the smarter option. Or maybe reconsider a deal for Teheran or a cheap deal for Collin McHugh or Brad Peacock from Houston.- 195 replies

no one is talking arrieta because most think he is on the rapid decline. I'd only give him a deal like 1-year prove it or 1-year with a LARGE 2nd year team option. If I'm going to sign one of these big four on a 3+ yuear deal it is Cobb and Cobb alone.- 195 replies

I want archer a lot but even I think that is too much. If that is what Archer commands - trade them something less for Odorizzi and sign Cobb. For Archer, I'd do Thorpe/Kepler/Gordon and offer to take on Denard's contract.- 195 replies

I am always a fan of building from within, but the Twins are truly well into the onset of their window to compete. With the rebuilt bullpen, the two remaining biggest holes for this team is a RH corner OF/1B bat and a true #1 SP. Although we obviously also need at least one more veteran SP as a contingency with question marks surrounding the position. We have the trade capital to land that #1 if an opposing team is in fact shopping one. We need to go on this, and then use our FA dollars to land that veteran lower-rotation veteran arm and that RH bat. We've already missed out on Cole, I hope we make every effort to land Archer because I doubt there are any other teams considering shopping a young controllable top-of-the-rotation type pitcher.

I'd be willing to deal Kepler or Kiriloff along with Gordon and a MiLB SP prospect in a deal for Archer - but if we can get Teheran for something a little less I'd be fine with that too. I wouldn't deal Lewis in a deal for either of them.

I still would try to do it on the cheaper side - sign Cobb, and give Tillman a 1-year prove it contract - like 1-6 or 1-7, with perhaps a club option for like 10 the following year. Then I would look to trade for Archer or as has been suggested on here Teheran. This would give the team a rotation as follows: Archer/Teheran Santana Berrios Cobb Gibson with proven backup options ready to fill gaps/injuries: Tillman Mejia along with injury recovery options: Pineda May Hughes Duffey and finally the rookie crop: Slagers Enns Gonsalves Romero Jorge et al I'm assuming a trade for Teheran or Archer would cost at least Gordon and perhaps one of those rookie SPs. Considering how our rotation would shake out for the next few years (with contracts expiring) - I'd do it in a heartbeat.

Why a Julio Teheran Trade Makes Sense for the Twins
NewClearHarley commented on Andrew Thares's blog entry in Rounding Third
I'm not sure the Twins could afford to pursue JD Martinez, but if we could it'd be a nice get. As for Teheran, I'd love to land him and still sign a top SP like Darvish or Cobb. -
Article: Can The Twins Better Their Bench?
NewClearHarley replied to Ted Schwerzler 's topic in Twins Daily Front Page News
I agree that Morrison would be a huge get but he is a lefty and we really need a better righty bench bat - if the team doesn't trust Vargas, I'd cut both him and Adrianza, sign Morrison as the everyday DH/backup 1B, and then pursue bringing back Eduardo Nunez to be a super utility type. He could play 3B if Sano is suspended and he can back up Sano, Polanco, and potentially both corner OFs. I'd guess the team would even choose to start him regularly in RF as a platoon partner with Kepler. By having Morrison start at DH most days, Grossman could become a quality bench bat who as a switch hitter (with a very good OBP) would give the team a valuable PH late in games.- 21 replies
