  1. You use an option whether you send him down before the season or after the start of the season. Makes no difference.
  2. Your are correct. If they are activated they can be placed on the major league disabled list. But then you are paying them a major league salary and benefits, as well as giving them valuable service time to get them closer to arbitration. I don't think teams go this route unless absolutely necessary. I think in Burdi's case he is probably consider on the active roster due to the Rule 5 distinction, so he could be placed on the 60 day list. In Chargois case, the team avoided activating him and placing him on the 60 day almost all season and had to release other players from their roster during the season in order to activate others to fill team needs, which shows what having that spot tied up causes. They would have had the same situation again this year if he was still unable to pitch to start this season. I think they have determined that those spots are just too valuable to have tied up with players that are unable to perform.
  3. One thing nobody has ever mentioned when discussing rostering Bard or Burdi and now Chargois is what the injury history would do to tie up the 40-man roster during the season. It is likely that none of them would make the 25 man roster to start the season if they were still with the Twins. If they are playing in the minor leagues and get injured (or in Burdi's case was injured last year) they can not be placed on the 60 Day disabled list on the 40 man roster, but must go on the minor league disabled list, which then ties up a 40 man roster spot that can not be used for another useful player. That is the reason that the front office feels they can not have these guys on their 40 man roster.
  4. The trick is to balance letting the young guys mature and capitalizing on a chance at a pennant run.
  5. I really don't see any of these guys as a fit except Carlos Gomez, and he may too expensive. And I don't see any RH batters in either AAA or AA at this point that could work. So I say go with what we have and hope they get it going.
  6. So maybe these added prospects give the Twins added flexibility to expend some prospects to acquire pitching through the trade avenue. Since they couldn't acquire Shohei Ohtani, maybe they can use the resources to help acquire another valuable asset.
  7. My earliest memory is not about meeting any players, as I never attended a MLB game until I was about 30. But I was a big Twins fan. I was in Detroit sometime in probably 1985, while Kirby Puckett was still hitting lead off. I was there for work, but I ended up spending the weekend. The Twins were playing the Tigers, so my first MLB game was at old Tigers Stadium. I bought a ticket from some guy outside the stadium that was trying to get rid of it, and I ended up sitting about 10 rows up from 3rd base, great seats. So of course Kirby was the first batter in the game, and he hit a towering home run on the very first pitch. Can't top that experience with much. I think the Twins ended up winning the game like 8-0 if I remember right. As far as a dream experience, I would love to meet and talk with Tony Oliva.
  8. Wouldn't it be a thrill for him, and the organization, to take someone like him, with really no idea of what he is really capable of at this point, and turn him into a MLB baseball player? Wouldn't that light the fire for baseball around the world?
  9. $13 million a year for a bullpen arm? Can't afford to send Hughes to the bullpen at this point.
  10. Everybody seems to think all this money being spent on free agents is free money. Ever think about where that money comes from. From the ticket prices, the price at the concession stand, the soveneir stand, the price of your beer to pay for the advertising money, YOUR CABLE TV BILL. "Not my money" doesn't sound so smart now, huh?
  11. I don't think anybody on these boards gives the Twins scouting department enough credit for determining the value of players. Murphy was a highly regarded catching prospect as he moved through the Yankee's system. Sitting as McCann's backup did nothing for his development. Every one of these catchers you talked about here has a track record in the major leagues, and every one of them was rejected by their previous team, including Bethancourt. The Yankees and Twins were both dealing from positions of strength and both GMs said they hated to lose the player they lost, but needed to upgrade another position. That's how trades work.
  12. Not only is it the 17th spot, but if anybody in 11-16 signs a QO free agent, the Twins move up a spot. Could definitely see the Red Sox doing that, maybe the Orioles, the others maybe not so much.
