  1. I still believe you need a capable fielder on the bench. There will be situations where the game is close and late and your no-hit guys are out of the game from pinch-hit replacements. It's just a good idea to have a backup that won't embarrass himself.
  2. The reality of the situation is that you'd have to couple that poor fielder with a good fielder as well. Which in the case of Plouffe, is not impossible because Trevor can also play corner OF so he fills in more of a super-utility/platoon role than anything else.
  3. Which is why ERA is a bad stat to use over a brief period of time (and is a weak stat in general, really). Last 28 days for Marcum: ERA: 5.06 BA: .246 OPS: .690 IP: 32.0 BB: 7 SO: 33 Which of those stats does not line up with the others?
  4. I think the lesson we can learn from this is "power from a classic power position is nice but when you're talking about a guy with a .400+ OBP and multiple batting titles, power ain't necessarily... necessary?" I need to work on that a bit.
  5. When I first saw that list, I was so hoping that Garrett Jones was on it just for hilarity's sake.
  6. Sano and... Sano? Maybe Vargas. He probably won't be a better hitter but he'll be more in the traditional mold of a 1B.
  7. Too late, he has been exposed to the Reefer Madness. He's done for.
  8. Day game! Lineups: Twins: Brian Dozier 2B Joe Mauer DH Ryan Doumit C Josh Willingham LF Justin Morneau 1B Trevor Plouffe 3B Oswaldo Arcia RF Clete Thomas CF Eduardo Escobar SS (Scott Diamond P) White Sox: Alejandro de Aza CF Alexei Ramirez SS Alex Rios RF Paul Konerko DH Adam Dunn 1B Dayan Viciedo LF Jeff Keppinger 3B Gordon Beckham 2B Hector Gimenez C (John Danks P)
  9. Well, yeah, but Stewart hasn't thrown a pitch yet.
  10. Joe Mauer OPS+: 148 Allen Craig: 120 Anthony Rizzo: 110 Ryan Howard (LOLZ): 113 Adam LaRoche: 114 Carlos Santana: 113 Mike Napoli: 114 In fact, Joe's OPS+ is higher than everyone on that list not named Joey, Chris, or Paul and he's only a couple of singles behind Joey and Paul. Basically, he's behind one guy who came out of nowhere and started playing out of his damned mind. You might want to re-think that list. Joe's value is highest at catcher. That is without a doubt. But just as John Olerud was an extremely good 1B without gobs of power, Joe could be one of the better first basemen in the league.
  11. I came up with Holliday and not much past that (and the Holliday trade didn't help them in the playoffs, where they were swept in the DLS). Who else did they get?
  12. Yep. I'd say Alex Meyer is the most important piece in the org right now. A lot is riding on that arm's future. Any one if the offensive prospects can fail and the org is still okay but if Meyer fails, you're looking at Berrios as the only real plus arm.
  13. Gardy should have told Kevin to throw a different pitch there.
  14. I don't see why Dempster wouldn't have signed here, though it may have been a bit of a challenge. Nobody expected the Red Sox to light up the world this season, either. And all things being equal, why not take the money? And Correia has done pretty well, all considering what we expected of him. Instead, replace Pelfrey with Marcum or Saunders. The Twins would be right around .500 right now and in the thick of the AL Central "race". Which was why I screamed about this offseason. I always said that with a little luck, the Twins could stay in contention for a good portion of the season. Well, shockingly enough, they got some of that luck and with one more league-average *decent* starting pitcher, they'd be chasing Detroit right now and probably in second place. In the end, I don't think it would matter (Detroit is a much better team) but it would put butts in the seats and this season would be fun to watch, something Twins fans desperately need from the team.
  15. There were about three rotations' worth of arms in Dempster, Blanton, Guthrie, Marcum, etc. that filled out a "middle of the road" free agent class.
  16. I wasn't accusing you of doing that, sorry if it came off that way.
  17. I've heard that Byron plays a mean pinball. Something to keep an eye on, for sure.
  18. Hard to say. Which brings me back to my earlier statement about basing "factual statements" on partial information. This is only Ryan's second draft since returning to the post. He's only really had one full offseason, which was equal parts resounding success and miserable failure. At best, we have a partial view of his plan (if there is one) and beyond that, it's mostly speculation, lots of hyperbole, with a heaping helping of teeth gnashing thrown in for good measure. I'm fine with disagreeing with individual moves. We all do it and we're all entitled to our opinions, lucid or not. But when it comes to accusing the organization of rampant stupidity when baseball works in 5-6 year cycles and we're only in year 1.5 is kinda annoying. Scratch that. It's really annoying.
  19. I just wanted to say that I'm a big fan of your posts. You've hit the ground running.
  20. Not yet. I don't think anyone has enough confidence in Trevor to offer anything of value. If he ends the season with an .800 OPS and 450+ PAs, then I'd definitely shop him but only make the deal if the return was good. If not, hold on to him for another season. There's really no rush with Trevor because Sano is far from ready with the glove.
  21. That's a little too far down the apologist rabbit hole for me. This team looks like a 73-ish win team, up from a 66-ish win team two years ago and a 69-ish win team last season. There is simply no reason for this team to shoot for anything less than a .500 record next season. They have the talent, they have the financial ability, they just need to start acting on it.
  22. Which is all true. But, again, it appears to be a strategy. Whether it's a working strategy is another matter entirely but there are plenty of folks on this forum calling the front office clueless, directionless, dumb, continue ad nauseum, when it's pretty clear that they're doing something... Whether it works or not will require additional time.
  23. Why, yes. Yes, I am. In less than 200 posts, you've managed to receive at least 20 user-generated reports and two different warnings from moderators. I've had enough.
  24. In a thread full of puzzling statements, that one was probably most puzzling. Does anyone have an injury history on Buxton? Has he ever been injured, going back to T-Ball?
