  1. I don't think it's meaningless but I think downward plane is overrated. What comes with height is strength and leverage. Those matter but they're certainly not make-or-break attributes, as MLB pitchers have shown not only through history but also recent history.
  2. I'm pretty wishy-washy on automated umpiring. On the pro side, it would make for a more competitive, better game of baseball. Removing human error from the situation leads to more accuracy and a better level of play. On the con side, it sucks much of the soul out of the game. Whether you love or hate human umpiring, something is lost when you look to a scoreboard to see the call instead of seeing a dynamic umpire throw out his arm and ring up a batter in a crucial situation. And sports are emotional. There's a human element that comes with a live umpire standing behind the catcher.
  3. I'm in no rush to remove one of the most enduring and human aspects of the game so, no, I'm not wrong.
  4. I watched the first season, it was pretty amazing. I haven't caught up since that point.
  5. I agree, I just find it odd people are referring to pitch framing as cheating when such a large portion of pitch framing is "being really good at doing what all catchers are supposed to do". Steady hands, avoiding extraneous movement, and giving the umpire the best possible look at the incoming pitch is what all catchers should strive to achieve, as it makes the umpire's job easier (and more accurate). The catchers who are bad at framing are the problem, not the other way around.
  6. The Giants really made a mistake with Cueto, what with him being 5'11" and everything. Pitcher height matters but it's not a disqualifying trait.
  7. Yeesh. I just noticed Kinsler's contract, which is relatively high risk given his age. Play him in 2017, do not pick up option for 2018: $16m ($11m contract, $5m buyout). Play him in both 2017 and 2018: $23m. That's a pretty crappy buyout for the size of that contract.
  8. Are people really suggesting that pitch framing is cheating? Ugh. It's not cheating. A large part of pitch framing is being really good at staying still. So now that's considered cheating?
  9. That's not true. Berrios was ranked 17 on BP and 19 on MLB's prospects lists. It's likely Berrios has a ceiling of a two starter but given the kid's work ethic, I won't put anything past him. The height is an issue but not necessarily something that will prevent him from being an ace if things go entirely right for both Berrios and the Twins.
  10. An unspectacular move but the kind of prudent, smart move a team with a trash fire for a pitching staff needs going forward.
  11. I'm still torn up about the release of Joe Benson.
  12. It's not as if he averaged close to 150 IP in four years of MiLB play as a starter. Oh, wait. Yes, he did. The guy needs another shot at starting, especially given his durability as a starter and lack thereof as a reliever.
  13. That's fair and we're down to semantics at that point. While Kinsler is a very good player, I generally consider "elite" as someone in the 5-7 WAR range, a guy who semi-regularly spikes into MVP territory. Eh, or maybe Kinsler is elite. It's a fine line. If he posts another 2-3 good seasons, he's an outsider for the Hall but he's in the conversation.
  14. Japan simply isn't feasible. A non-stop flight from LA to Toyko is 12 hours and you jump forward a day in the process. If a game in Los Angeles ends at 10pm and the team boards a plane at midnight, they'd land in Japan at... Oh, ****, who even knows? 12am + 12 hour flight - 7 hours time difference + 1 full day = WTF
  15. While I generally like having one thread to catch minor news, I feel this trade is big enough to warrant its own thread. Given how the Twins so badly need a catcher, McCann going to the Astros is a moderately big deal. There is no concrete rule about this, just go with the flow.
  16. I think it's more than half. I voted for Clinton but didn't particularly enjoy casting that vote. I think she'd be a competent leader and it'd be nice to have a female president for once but she's in way too deep with Wall St, she's too hawkish, and I don't like the fact her last name is Clinton (not because of Bill but because seeing two families rule the country for the large part of four decades is not a good thing).
  17. Damn, forgot about Captain Clownshoe. Well, it's still a net win even with him in the mix.
  18. Or maybe Mitt realizes the nation is hanging upon a precipice and doesn't want to see it fall. I disagree with Romney's politics but I don't consider him a bad person. It's possible he's considering the job simply because he, like the rest of us, is worried that the job is much bigger than Trump and doesn't want to see us crash and burn because his pride got in the way. There are several ways to look at the situation and not all of them involve Romney selling out to Trump.
  19. But that's a pretty risky thing to do when you're talking about the age 36 season of a middle infielder. Whereas Dozier has a pretty solid chance of repeating 4-ish fWAR seasons through 2018 (and a small chance of being better than that), Kinsler's chance of maintaining a 4-ish fWAR for two more seasons is a pretty tall order for a non-elite player who derives a large portion of his value from defense. Sure, he can do it, but I wouldn't bet on it. I'd bet on the opposite happening, actually.
  20. Just sit back and enjoy the show. It's not every day we get to watch a swamp turn into a landfill in real time.
  21. Kinsler has a longer track record of success because he's five (!) years older than Dozier. Over the past three seasons... Dozier: 13.9 fWAR Kinsler: 15.3 fWAR Again, Dozier is five years younger. If trading similar talent for either player, you choose Dozier 11 times out of 10. And that's not a knock on Kinsler, he has been a fantastic player, it's just an acknowledgement that 35 year old middle infielders are not as good a bet as 30 year old middle infielders.
  22. Can we just go ahead and flip that for four years? I'm a lot more comfortable with Romney, Ryan, Pence, Trump than the inverse.
  23. Yeah, exactly.
  24. I'm not a praying man, but... Yeah, I'll go ahead and pray this happens.
  25. Bah, my wife refuses to even read about it because the situation is so depressing. Some help she is.
