  1. Yep. It’s incredibly rewarding... but still, the stress is taking years off my life. I can’t count how many nights I’ve had trouble sleeping over the past year and a half but the number is well into the triple digits. If I could change the past, I wouldn’t do anything differently but the process has definitely changed what I will do in the future.
  2. That's amazing, Ben. We're getting really close to adoption ourselves (it appears mom is throwing one final Hail Mary to get her kids back but the outcome is likely to fall in our favor) but after this, we're out of the game. Foster to adopt is waaaaayyyy too stressful. You spend literal YEARS on pins and needles as the courts slowly navigate the process and can yank the kids away at any moment. We'd both like one more kid. May do it naturally or private adoption, not sure yet... but neither one of us can handle the foster process again. I try to explain to people how stressful it is but I don't know if you really can explain it unless you've done it yourself.
  3. Well, the situation was completely different last year. They had FAR less money (Mauer, Dozier, Santana on the books) and free agents were falling into their lap at bargain prices. And they still posted the highest payroll in team history. Now, that payroll was still too freakin' low but they don't get to dictate fiscal policy with the team. I don't really care about contract length, I want quality players. Frankly, I don't understand your fascination with "doing something for the future", Mike. You realize most long-term contracts are absolute albatrosses near the end and some (like the Darvish contract we were clamoring for just last offseason) are albatrosses the moment ink is put to paper. I'm not lobbying for the Twins to sign a six year deal, I'm lobbying for them to sign good players. That often requires 5-6 year deals but if you shop smartly, you can get some pretty damned good players for 2-3 years at a time.
  4. To be fair, it's still really early this offseason. I simply can't get worked up about another deal of this kind. If it leads to a larger signing in a month, yay. It's *way* too early to judge the offseason but I can't work myself into a state of excitement over this kind of thing, either.
  5. In a vacuum, a fine deal and the type of deal teams like the Twins need to make (and succeed at) to thrive. But I'm getting sick and tired of "fine" deals. This team has a truckload of money and they need to spend some of it on players who are more "guaranteed" than "upside if things go right".
  6. I think the trend started a few months ago. IMO, we saw the peak of the market around that time and it's going to be a bumpy ride for at least a couple of years.
  7. It's not a coincidence that the first real verification of widespread voter fraud came via the absentee ballot, which is EASILY the most fraud-prone method of voting. But it's also a staple of conservative voting, so voter ID laws basically ignore it. Because voter ID laws aren't actually about preventing voter fraud.
  8. Mind blowing what is going on in North Carolina. https://www.npr.org/2018/12/04/673311746/democrats-weigh-options-in-potentially-tainted-n-c-congressional-race?utm_source=facebook.com&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=npr&utm_term=nprnews&utm_content=203004
  9. I've been skeptical of her but so far, she's pretty much ****ing killing it. I eagerly await her... descent... into... moneyed politics. I hate this country.
  10. See, I know you, and my point wasn't a strawman. I was intentionally poking you, man. If I came across as a bit abrasive, my apologies. My point is that you know inequity exists in Washington yet you defended a pretty obvious status quo measure to ensure that inequity. It's okay to just admit this kind of garbage is pure bull****, no matter how much one can benefit from it in the future. People should not work without pay. It's not a difficult concept to grasp. Sure, you're an intern and probably suck at everything... but you were the BEST candidate to fill that role. That means you have worth and worth deserves compensation.
  11. Two more examples of how the GOP continues to step away from the interests of democracy. https://www.npr.org/2018/12/04/673020090/in-states-they-lost-some-gop-lawmakers-rush-to-limit-new-democrats-power Such an awesome party nowadays. I totally get why ANYONE would vote for any of them, ever.
  12. Yes, because we all know how one example eliminates the problem. No one is completely "shut out" of politics but we do a pretty damned good job of narrowing the field so that those who grow up in a privileged environment have an overwhelming advantage in politics. And given that politicians are supposed to be a representation of our populace and its ideals, that seems like a pretty **** way to create that representation. But hey, maybe you're right. Everything has been working perfectly in Washington lately, after all.
  13. It really shows just how entrenched people are in their views. This is outrageous.
  14. That's fair, though you could probably work up an interesting system where you keep both Austin and Cron but sub in Kepler at first base occasionally, then rotate someone else through DH and OF. Like I said, I'm not impressed much by this deal but I'll wait it out and see what else is planned.
  15. Frankly, it's irrelevant how good or bad Rooker looks. He hasn't played a game above AA and the Twins just picked up a year-by-year player. When dealing with up-and-coming prospects, the correct way to proceed most of the time is to pretend they don't exist in any single year. You pick up players to fill the necessary roles (but maybe avoid 3+ year deals) and then be happily surprised when said prospect takes the job and forces out the stop-gap player.
  16. To put it as gently as possible, I'm glad those "analysts" aren't running the team.
  17. I'm pretty lukewarm on this deal (but hey, free stuff and whatever) but that's a bit unfair to Cron. For whatever reason, he just doesn't get playing time... but when he plays, his hits pretty well (career 112 OPS+ and only one season under 100 at 98).
  18. It's not about political gain, it's about actually getting the guy out of office if he's guilty of a crime. Pull the trigger too early on that process and things can easily backfire.
  19. I'm wary of impeachment talk. It should literally be the last step in the process and only happen when the evidence is so overwhelming that it can't be denied (some will still deny it but you just need independents and socially-conscious republicans on board, not the fringe nutters). Clinton basically lied under oath and when impeachment was on the board, he actually became more popular. Democrats should tread lightly - very lightly - around this subject, especially when it's almost entirely speculation.
  20. I'm champing at the bit to hear Mueller say ANYTHING publicly. We can't be that far away from more announcements. And the blowback in the Senate will be quite the spectacle. There are enough vulnerable Republicans in 2020 that I think preventing Mueller from doing his job is going to be a tough task for the GOP. And if they even try, things could blow up spectacularly.
  21. God, yes, so much this. It was a fair trade. A good reliever for a middling pitching prospect.
  22. It's also something I'm concerned about but I don't know who else can or will modernize sports broadcasting.
  23. Yes, please. This could force the modernization of sports broadcasting that is badly needed. https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2018/11/amazon-trying-to-buy-22-cable-tv-sports-channels-including-yankees-network/
  24. Damn, I knew the market had been crapping all over itself recently but I didn't realize how much it had fallen, particularly in the sector I was heavily invested (tech). I sold my stock in July of 2017. If I wanted to repurchase, I could buy back into most of my stocks for lower than I the price I sold.
  25. I wouldn't buy any tech right now but I think Facebook's long-term outlook is still very strong. They're the one social media company that understands how to make money. And I see them remaining the sole powerhouse in that market. I don't see how any one could lure people away from their platform in large numbers, it's simply too comprehensive at this point.
