Rusty Kuntz had a lengthy career for himself, playing in the majors over parts of seven seasons, but let's be real: we're all here for the name. Russell Jay Kuntz was born in 1955 and played most of his career for the Chicago White Sox. He was traded to the Twins mid-season in 1983 for minor league third baseman Mike Sodders, who never made the majors. While in Minnesota only a partial season, Kuntz collected 113 plate appearances over 31 games (59 OPS+) before moving to the Tigers in 1984 and becoming a peripheral part of their championship winning team. Looking back at Kuntz's career, it's not hard to see why he stuck around in the majors but never received more than 168 plate appearances in the season: he was comically bad against right-handed pitchers. While he posted a respectable .741 OPS against southpaws in his career, his OPS against righties was an abysmal .483. -
Several little birdies told me the Twins were interested in moving Kepler, largely out of necessity because they needed money to acquire other players (and hoped to complete an MLB-for-MLB swap). It didn't work out.

It will be interesting to see how he does. And if the price of Kikuchi was lower, it'd be easier to jump into that deal. But if the cost of Kikuchi is literally David Festa, I'll stick with David Festa and the upside that goes along with it.

The first statement is where I stumble a bit. Is he *probably* better? Yes. But his ceiling is also quite limited. I'm torn between wanting the floor of Kikuchi versus the ceiling of Festa.

This news might cause whiplash: the New York Yankees are apparently dangling starting pitcher Nestor Cortes on the trade market. Cortes is only 29 years old and won't become a free agent until after the 2025 season. Cortes has flashed brilliance in the past but scuffled in 2023 (87 ERA+) and is roughly league-average this season (99 ERA+). The Yankees, an obvious contender this season, will likely be looking for major-league talent in return for the pitcher, which could make a lot of sense for the Twins, who are severely payroll-constrained at the deadline. -

Kikuchi has struggled this year for the Jays, posting an 85 ERA+ after posting a stellar 111 ERA+ last season. Most of his peripherals indicate he's a similar pitcher to the one that was well above average in 2023; last year, he was quite fortunate in batted-ball outcomes while this year, the opposite is true. If relying on advanced metrics, he's probably closer to a league-average starter in both seasons. Kikuchi is making $10 million this season, which means an acquiring team would be on the hook for about $4 million. Unfortunately, insiders are suggesting the Twins are unwilling to add payroll, which means they will need to go above and beyond other teams in prospect capital to bring Kikuchi to Minnesota. -

It was a confluence of events that went wrong, led by former ownership. Peter Seidler was sick and knew he didn't have long to live so he greenlit the Padres' absurd spending over the past several years. And right near the end, Diamond Sports declared bankruptcy and stopped paying the Padres. That left them in a dire situation as they scrambled to cover guaranteed payroll expenses around the end of the 2023 season, IIRC.

If you think the Twins are the only team with payroll concerns, you’re not really paying attention to the sport. The Padres had to take out a loan just to make payroll. Lots of teams - Milwaukee, Texas, Arizona - have remained payroll stagnant or gone backwards, all after quite successful seasons.

I suspect that was a called bunt. It was one of the few situations where bunting for an out makes sense: you need one run and only one run.
