  1. It helps the Cardinals when they have pitching prospects that flourish such as Adam Wainwright, Lance Lynn, Michael Wacha, Carlos Martinez, and Luke Weaver. Plus a lot of thier positional players are home grown with either an aggressive trade or free agent signing every now and then. The real key for the Cardinals though is good pitcher development.
  2. Is okay to be even more excited about him now?? If it wasn’t for Enlow’s dip in his fastball velocity he sounded like a sure fire 1st rounder. I’m excited to see how he progresses. Thanks for the report Bob!!
  3. Ok then, how about Lance Lynn or Alex Cobb. It’s cute the Twins want to do something about their rotation yet when push comes to shove they “sit on their hands”. Cobb and Lynn won’t break the bank so to speak and I’m sure they would sign a 4 yr deal. To walk away with none of the top 4 free agent pitchers would tell me the Twins FO either a. doesn’t realize how poor our current rotation is, or b. still stubbornly plays by the old “Twins Way” rules and only signs bottom feeder reclamation projects ala Ramon Ortiz, Livan Hernandez, Jason Marquis, Mike Pelfrey, or Kevin Correa. We need to sign at least one of the top free agent pitchers to prove we are “in it to win it”, IMO.
  4. From what the scouting report says Enlow’s velocity came back between 90-94 while he pitched for the GCL Twins so that’s better than Duffey’s upper 80’s fastball, plus Enlow is younger...I have more confidence now that Enlow can develop a change rather than Duffey IMO.
  5. He looks great so far. Sounds like we might have got a steal.
  6. According to Jon Heyman the bidding for Jake Arrieta might come down between the Twins and Brewers (of course we have heard this before). But still if it is between us and Milwaukee there is no reason for us to be outbid by a lower market team like Milwaukee for Arrieta. He might have shown regression the last few years, but for what it’s worth Chris Archer has shown regression too and is a few years younger than Arrieta.
  7. Any chance the Twins send Enlow to Cedar Rapids after he pitches in EST? I mean I remember Lewis Thorpe going straight from the GCL Twins to Ceder Rapids, could the Twins do the same for Enlow given Enlow’s potential?
  8. If we can get McHugh without giving up too much I’d be intrigued. His elbow issues worry me though. From the sound of it he’d be cheaper in a trade then Chris Archer. When healthy he looks good and would be plenty good in our rotation. He doesn’t seem to be over powering so what’s his secret to his success? I just hope that if we pull off a trade for him that his “stuff” holds up over time.
  9. For me is a larger picture issue than just Darvish. I mean as of now Jake Arrieta, Lance Lynn, and Alex Cobb are available. All are at worst a # 3 in most rotations (probably a #1 or 2 for us). But in all reality we’ll probably be stuck with the bottom barrel pitchers like Tillman, Garcia, or Wade Miley. Signing any of those pitchers won’t help us as they may not even last an entire year with the Twins. If the Twins sign any of the top 3 pitching free agents I will be satisfied, but if they sign a low level free agent it will look to us fans like the Twins aren’t trying.
  10. With the news that we missed on Darvish this sounds a little sad as well since more than likely the only way we’ll ever get an ace is to “home grow” one. Graterol and Romero have the velocity to look like that “ace”, but it feels a little hollow if all they do is end up in our bullpen. We need more “ace” like prospects, not ones who end up in the bullpen. However I will concede I have no idea what the future holds for Graterol or Romero, just hope of them can finally be that ace we have needed for years.
  11. Well to be blunt we need to sign Arrieta, Lynn, or Cobb or our free agency is a bust, and the Twins organization once again proves they aren’t “in it to win it”. We probably will sign a free agent pitcher, but he will probably be worth less than a replacement player but the Twins brass will spin the signing (like Chris Tillman or Wade Miley) as finding a “diamond in the rough” when in reality they might be gone as early as June as they will preform poorly. Trading for Chris Archer is interesting yet with our current depth issues on the rotation and the uncertain future of Archer (his win/loss mark the last 2 yrs is poor, same with his ERA, and batting average against), the thing is could we afford to trade Gonsalves, Romero, or Thorpe if Archer bombs here? Look if we get nothing for our rotation this year it speaks poorly of our front office and wanting to ever “go for it all”.
  12. I feel cautiously optimistic on Graterol. His velocity on his fastball is outstanding, plus I have to think he will improve both his command/control, and his secondary pitches. Obviously since he had Tommy John health will be a concern but other than that the sky’s the limit for him. I look forward to see his progress this year.
  13. I think by season’s end Lewis Thorpe will be in the top 5 prospects for the Twins. I see him coming out the gates in Chattanooga stronger than Fernando Romero did last year as Thorpe’s game is not so much power as it is using his 4 pitch arsenal (fastball, change, curve, slider). Thorpe finally has had a healthy off season to improve his craft, something he hasn’t had since 2014, so he should show the improvement most scouts felt he would have on his command/control and his improvement in his curve and slider. Thorpe very well could be another top of the rotation prospect. Of course though he has to stay healthy...
  14. If we can’t sign Darvish, Arrieta, Cobb, or Lynn I don’t want the Twins to go out and sign either Tillman, Garcia, or Wade Miley. If they cannot sign any of the top 4 free agent pitchers I’d rather roll out Mejia, Hughes, Slegers, Jorge, (eventually) May, and Gonsalves to compete for the #4 and 5 spots in the rotation. Only problem with that is the only 2 spots on the rotation that will be solidified for the year as Berrios and Santana are the only 2 locks. Gibson could be, but he could also fail like most of last year, but if you sign a low rung free agent like Tillman or Garcia they may pitch so poorly they won’t last past May anyways. So if that’s the case I’d rather roll with our own pitchers we already have rather than dump pitchers we picked up in free agency.
  15. Mejia is a wild card, that’s for sure. He’s going to need to be better at commanding/controlling his pitches better. Mejia and Gibson are going to really have to work to stay in the rotation as Slegers, Jorge, May, Gonsalves, Romero, and possibly Littell will be trying to get into the rotation this year. If Mejia can’t improve he’ll either go to the bullpen or be looking for a new team. Competition should bring out the best in Mejia at least that’s my hope.
  16. If we do nothing and not sign one of the 4 free agent pitchers our off season is a failure imo. Look I am all for seeing what Gonsalves and Romero can do, but right now neither one is ready to legitimately contribute to rotation now. And if the Twins sign a pitcher like Chris Tillman or Jamie Garcia to me it’s a sign the Twins aren’t serious to make the playoffs this year. And we can hope Trevor May can be a solid piece of the rotation but even so he is far from a sure thing.
  17. I definitely think Berrios will improve even more this year. If he can be more consistent with his command of his fastball that’ll be a start, and he’s got to improve his change up to become a better starter. The funny thing is in the Minors he was graded as having a plus change and a near plus curve. Given Berrios’ work ethic and attention to detail I wouldn’t be surprised if his fastball command was better and his changeup improved.
  18. I thought Gonsalves had a lot of spin on his fastball. I recall reading an article on this last spring training. Was that article inaccurate? I don’t know. However I hope he continues to prove people wrong. Gonsalves might not have the “best stuff” but from what I have read he sure has pitchability and an advanced feel for pitching. Like all our pitching prospects I hope he is successful, but I understand that very few actually “make it” in the bigs.
  19. Lewis Thorpe-He did great pitching last year coming off of Tommy John surgery and mono. Now we will see how improved Thorpe will be since he actually had a full off season. Fernando Romero-Over all last year was a successful one for Romero, however he ended poorly last year and was on the DL with shoulder impingement. It will be interesting to see how much better Romero can be, especially if his secondary stuff is better. Tyler Wells-If Wells is healthy this year he may very well be knocking on the door to AAA by years end. When healthy last year he was absolutely dominant pitching for Cedar Rapids. Not only was his stuff pretty good, but for a 6’8” pitcher his control and command was pretty good as well. I could see him succeeding in both Ft Myers and Chattanooga so long as he is healthy.
  20. If we could pull off getting Darvish I would. I think he’d be more of an ace we are looking for. After that I would look and try for Jake Arrieta as I think he’d do well here at Target Field. After that would be Lance Lynn. His personality might not be great, but he’s very solid and when healthy has been one of the better starters in the league. If all those options are off the table then Alex Cobb would be worth signing. Cobb is solid, however he has never been a real durable starter.
  21. I hope all works out for Romero to start. Hopefully his shoulder issues won’t surface again. I mean it sounds like he is able to keep his fastball velocity for the entire game so... What we need to see from Romero IMO is improvements in his secondary stuff. His slider sounds like it’s really close, and it also sounds as if he has really worked hard on his change up. I saw at least one scouting report compare him to Carlos Martinez of the St Louis Cardinals. If he could be a starter like that for us that’d be great.
  22. Not an outstanding performance by Thorpe but over all he has been better than advertised considering all his hurdles he had to jump just to get to this point. I think it would be rather foolish to leave Thorpe off the 40 man as his potential would be enough that the Twins would in all likelihood loose Thorpe to the Rule V draft.
  23. The Twins would be crazy not to add Thorpe on the 40 man roster for next year. I know there is a ton of players needing to be added but other than Stephen Gonsalves there is no must have prospect in that list other than Thorpe. For coming off of a 2 year lay-off Thorpe looks better than I expected, plus with the possibility of having a legit 4 pitch arsenal at his disposal no starter (not even a healthy Fernando Romero) has the ceiling Thorpe has. To be honest I'd rather risk Kohl Stewart being lost to the Rule V rather than Lewis Thorpe.
  24. Looks like it's time to promote Romero, actually they should have done it around the All Star break. I mean he's earned it on preformance alone. I just find it puzzling they can't make room for him and Stephen Gonsalves in Rochester when they are pitching well enough for said promotion.
